ZMG vs RGG Rule Booklets
« on: February 15, 2013, 02:35:21 PM »
I just realized ZMG refers to cloisters as monasteries in their rule book. Anyone notice of any other changes?

Pennants have turned into banners. I think if I were going to change it, I would've changed it to shields (since that's what they look like), but so be it.

There's actually another interesting change to the rules, too. The HiG rules don't say anything about what to do if the game ends in a tie. The RGG rules said that tied players "rejoice in their shared victory." Now the ZMG rules say "In case of a tie, play another game to determine the winner!"

That's a bit rough after several hours of a Mega-Carc marathon. Maybe clear the board and play a 5-minute overtime or something....

You could play a quick game of Carcassonne Dice Game to break the tie. ;)

Oh my! That is a huge pain, especially when you are like me and follow rules to the letter  C:-) ... RGG was so much more forgiving. But at least their is a tiebreaker ruling, didn't know HiG didn't have one.

I started with writing a dictionary about Carcassonne - German/English - at the Carcassonne-Forum.
And I need some more days.....
I have found out some differences in the translation:

Gefolgsfrau - woman follower (CAR) / messenger (ZMG)
Goldstück - gold piece (CAR) / gold ingot (ZMG)

Warenplättchen -
trade good tokens (RGG) / trade counters (CAR) / goods tokens (ZMG)

Korn - grain (CAR+RGG) / wheat (ZMG)
Tuch - cloth (CAR+RGG) / fabric (ZMG)

see the posts above:
Wappen - pennant (CAR+RGG) / banner (ZMG)
Kloster - cloister (CAR+RGG) / monastery (ZMG)

Gefolgsfrau - woman follower (CAR) / messenger (ZMG)
Goldstück - gold piece (CAR) / gold ingot (ZMG)

Z-Man just calls it "followers in 6 colors". They don't call it a "messenger", unless the rules are different in Big Box 4 than in the rules insert in the Minis 2 box.

On some other notes, direction translations of the German should also be noted if not otherwise used:
Gefolgsfrau - woman follower (CAR+German) / messenger (ZMG) / follower woman (German)
Goldstück - gold piece (CAR) / gold ingot (ZMG) / piece of Gold (Germany)
Warenplättchen- trade good tokens (RGG) / trade counters (CAR) / goods tokens (ZMG) / goods wafer (Germany)
Korn - grain (CAR+RGG) / wheat (ZMG) / corn (Germany)
Tuch - cloth (CAR+RGG+German) / fabric (ZMG)
Wappen - pennant (CAR+RGG) / banner (ZMG) / coat of arms (German)
Kloster - cloister (CAR+RGG+German) / monastery (ZMG)

I have only the rule from the BixBox4 - Z-man-Games.
Did ZMG publish the Mini 1-6 (7) in small boxes like RGG?
I haven't the rules from RGG Mini 1-6 (7).

In the rule of the BigBox4:
They choose the word "6 messengers".

Perhaps I should make the whole dictionary here at CarcassonneCentral in the workshop....

Z-Man has not released the minis yet. They were released by RGG just prior to the switchover.

Not true, Scott. Z-Man has released them in the Big Box 4. And I forgot that I had the RGG version rather than the Z-Man, but no, Z-Man hasn't published the individual expansions yet, only the Big Box.

I think a full terms comparison dictionary would be good, especially for use in future versions of the CAR. Perhaps in places where Hans im Glück, the direct German, Rio Grande, and Z-Man versions differ, the majority term should be used in the CAR.

Then I think it is a part of the rules section more than a part of the workshop.
I will make some more information at Carcassonne-Forum this weekend and then I will put it here at CarcassonneCentral in the rules with an own thread.

Call me a traditionalist, but I'll never switch over to the zmg terminology

That's what I meant. They haven't released them separately.

For the members of both forums:
The link to the work

Whaleyland, you wrote this for example:
Quote
Wappen - pennant (CAR+RGG) / banner (ZMG) / coat of arms (German)

I choose the parenthesis follows:
the word between the parenthesis: where have I found the word on the left side outside the parenthesis?  example: banner (ZMG)

coat of arms (German) - you can't find "coat of arms" in German - it's an English word.   ;D

But I think you meant the really correct English word of the German word "Wappen".

This dictionary is only about the world of the game Carcassonne.
I think we have here enough different vocabulary because of the versions from RGG, ZMG, CAR.

I disagree. If the translation by Z-Man and/or Rio Grande doesn't adequately translate the word from German, or if there is a tie between versions, I think going back to the original German translation is a good option. I mean, for Kultstätten, Matt translated it as "shrine" even though Rio Grande chose "cult place". In the end, the actual translation was "place of worship". Oddly, Hans im Glück then went and called the expansion Graf, Konig und Konsorten, which means, in English, "consorts", a term that has nothing to do with the expansion.
