News and Events / How should the thief be represented?
« on: August 10, 2016, 01:36:32 AM »
The latest MeepleSource Kickstarter has started, check it out!.

Meeplesource have been kind enough to help design a Mascot meeple on our behalf and we've been running some polls to decide what it should look like!

This will be the final of our Character Polls - How should the thief be represented?

Like the pre-previous, vote this will be open for members to make suggestions:

Perhaps you'd like to see the Thief in a cape [ ;) franks], like the dude on the Carcassonne Box art
Perhaps with a knife in his belt
Perhaps a RobinHood cap
Perhaps a bag of money

The poll is open!

News and Events / How should the Monk be represented?
« on: August 06, 2016, 07:28:12 AM »
Meeplesource are starting their Kickstarter very soon.  There's still time to vote.

They have been kind enough to create Carcassonne Central a mascot; thus far we've voted on a theme and determined how the knight and farmer will be represented.

The question now is:

How will the Monk be represented?

I had to think very carefully about this one.  If a habit or tonsure is chosen I think, either: It will not be clearly monk related; or the final design will look like a Monk holding a shield and a pitchfork (the other two elements we've chosen), rather than a reasonable blend of the 4-follower classes.

I've voted for the wooden-cross, which could be worn around the neck with rosary beads, or around the waist.

Other suggestions welcome as always.  Bonus points if you happen to know the formal name of a wooden-cross.

News and Events / GenCan't SoloCon Competition 2016 - Physical Only
« on: August 03, 2016, 11:04:05 AM »
As I described in the ACCGSC-thread there are 2 contests being run in parallel from: NOW until Sunday 7th August 2016 23:59:59 SST.  No entries can be submitted after the deadline.

Physical Only Contest

Now for the main event!

I've been working on a Solo Variant especially for this event entitled: Carcassonne: Solomo

Inspired by JF's 'Carcassonne: Island' in this variant the player is given the task designing a new Duomo; a type of Italian Cathedral. Solomo is a word-play on Solo-mode & Duomo. The player play tiles within the strict confines of the walls of the Solomo, using only the 72-tiles from the base game.

It is assumed a player will be familiar with the basic rules of Carcassonne before attempting this
variant.

The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible!

A full set of rules can be downloaded from here.

I'll give you a brief overview of the game's rules:

It's only played with 5 meeple, +1 for scoring!

Rule 1: Start by build the Solomo Walls

Draw 26 tiles and lay them face down in the following fashion:

Rule 2 : Starting the game

The first tile is drawn and must be placed on one of the 2 starting locations, marked with a red-X.  Subsequent tiles must be placed touching an existing tile, or if available it can be played at the other start location.

Rule 3: Discarding tiles

Rather than laying a tile you may discard a tile - a discarded tile is placed face up into one of the corners, marked with a red-D.
A discarded tile cannot have a follower played on it. If a tile cannot be legally played, it must be discarded

Rule 4: Use the Solomo Walls to complete features.

Features work like Abbey walls, if you are familiar.  A feature can be considered terminated, and possibly completed if played against the Walls of the solomo.

Rule 5: Cloisters

The walls are considered when scoring cloisters, including corners.

Rule 6: Ending the game

The game ends when all 72-tiles are laid, or if four tiles have been discarded into the corners of the Solomo and a fifth tile must be discarded.

Rule 7: Perfect Solomo Bonus
If you manage to lay all 72 tiles, you score a perfect Solomo and earn an additional 15 bonus points.

Again, check the full rules are more details and examples,

Here's a few photos of games I captured.  My highest score was 155!!

Here I scored 135, it was a good game, except I managed to play the tiles so I got 2 uncompletable tiles.

Here I scored 140, I'd have done much better if I got some farmers down!

This was my best game, I drew all the cloisters and scored a massive farm:

Please note, I was using an astronomer tile as a replacement for the tile i sent to Dan.

Photos as I described previously!

Finally, it would be great to see submissions via twitter, please use the #gencant #carcsolocon @carcassonne tags.

If you have any questions about Carcassonne: Solomo please see the Variant Workshop to avoid clutter on this submissions thread.

« on: August 03, 2016, 10:38:47 AM »
It's time for:

As I described in the ACCGSC-thread there are 2 contests being run in parallel from: NOW until Sunday 7th August 2016 23:59:59 SST.  No entries can be submitted after the deadline.

The Digital/Physical Contest

I'd recommend using JCloisterZone to set up your games, but you're welcome to play a physical game with real tiles and score tracks if you prefer.

This year's setup will include the following expansions/Options:
Please note, if you are playing a physical game:
  • If you are using the new art style, the River and Abbot expansions should be removed
  • You may use another coloured meeple to represent your Phantom, if you do not have a Phantom available.
  • There is a subtle difference in rules between the original and new editions.  Thus, abide to the rules of the edition you are using.  (Hint:  The New artwork edition has an advantage).

Contest Submissions
I should make clear, that contest submissions must include a screenshot from JCloisterzone, or other digital platform.
Physical Submissions MUST include a clear photo showing the entire board and scoretrack at the end of the game but with follower on incomplete features in situ - this way we can check your maths :)

Prizes

For the 'Physical Only Solo Contest' there will be 4 prizes.  Again this will be different commemorative personalized tiles!

  • The 1st Scoring Player
  • A Random Spot Prize
  • A Random Spot Prize

The random prizes will be awarded as above.  Up to 5-chances per player, plus an extra for a tweet including:   #gencant  #carcsolocon @carcassonne  with their submission.

News and Events / How should the Farmer be represented?
« on: August 01, 2016, 04:37:30 PM »
If you've been following along you'll know that Meeple Source has been kind enough to offer to make us a Carcassonne Central Mascot during the course of their next kickstarter.  You can read more about it here.  You'll know our Mascot will be represented by the 4 classes of followers from Carcassonne: The Knight, Monk, Farmer and Thief.

Our next poll is starting here & this time it will be an OPEN POLL.  Where you'll have to state how you think the farmer should be represented.

I'm going to get the ball rolling by saying:

With a cap, much like this:

News and Events / Announcements at Essen Spiel 2016
« on: July 31, 2016, 02:42:48 PM »
I've been doing some digging.  Hans im Glueck have announced:

Carcassonne:Amazonas will be released at Essen, along with the first Star Wars Expansion:

http://www.merz-verlag-en.com/new-releases.html

This you probably already know, but if you check the releases you'll see that the Cundco Shop is also releasing:  "The Watchtowers" which looks to be a mini-expansion given it costs 6.50Euro.  No more is known by me at this time.  Interestingly, the Japanese Temples were not listed, even though these are to be released at Essen.

As I said before, I'm looking forward to the first StarWars expansion.

Product details have been released here including the rules PDF:

http://www.schmidtspiele.de/produkt-detail/product/star-wars-carcassonne-erweiterung-1-48260.html

The rules show, there will be 18 tiles which look like variants from TnB & InC.  Also included are 6th player: Kylo Ren meeple and 50/100 point markers.

The significant change to the rules are each player is given a lightsabre and a blaster which can be placed with their meeple and act as dice modifiers, including a D6 which rolls 3,4,5,6,7,8.  BB8 is shown as the watermark.

Edit:  I forgot to include Bretspielebox's Link about it all:

As you are probably aware, the kind folk from MeepleSource have offered to design a Meeple Mascot for Carcassonne Central following their new Kickstarter Campaign.  They are currently collecting people's opinions on what should be included in the next campaign.

In the first vote of the series Carcassonne Central decided that our Meeple Mascot would be of Classical Meeple shape, but represented as a mix of "part knight, part thief, part monk and part farmer".

Now we must decided how each component is best represented.  So the question follows:

How should the Knight be represented?

I think my preference is by holding a shield, this would give us options to display a Carcassonne insignia on it; but you get to decide.

Cast you votes!

News and Events / GenCan't SoloCon Competition 2016
« on: July 24, 2016, 06:29:51 AM »
Last year Carcassonne Central took part in the GenCan't Solo Convention.  It's a very large unconvention for people who cannot attend GenCon.
You can read all about it here: http://www.gencant.com/
If you didn't know Gen Con is the original, longest-running, best-attended, gaming convention in the world!

In 2015, we had over 30 contestants take part in solo games of Basic Carcassonne attempting to score the most number of points possible.  Leven was ultimately our solo champion scoring 303 points!  You can see everyone's entries from last year here..

When is it?
It runs from late-3rd August until the 7th August, 2016.

For this reason, the terms of the contest will not be announced until the 3rd of August.  Entries will not be accepted before the 4th August or after the 7th August.  23:59:59 SST

Don't forget to tweet about the event, including: #gencant #carcsolocon @carcassonne

If you need help getting JCloisterZone running, there's usually plenty of people in the #cc-league chatroom willing to help!

To win spot prizes, the maximum number of chances will be 5 per player, but you are welcome to submit more attempts.  One additional chance will be given to anyone who includes #gencant #carcsolocon @carcassonne in a tweet with their submission.  You can submit on twitter, here or on CarcF.

Physical/Digital games:

See the Submission Thread

Use the following expansions:  Base Game, Inns & Cathedrals,  Traders & Builders, and The Phantom

News and Events / Carcassonne Central - MeepleSource Mascot - Theme
« on: July 24, 2016, 06:04:12 AM »
As you probably already know the very kind folks at Meeple Source are running a new Kickstarter and have offered to help design a Meeple Mascot for Carcassonne Central!

You can read more about it in the main thread.

I've collected most of the ideas we've had so far to produce our first MeepleSource Mascot Poll - What theme should the mascot take?

I have not set a end date for the poll, but results will most likely be collected on Wednesday.
