A new mini expansion has been announced on Spiel Doch! 2021/2.
Except this image, no other details have been released yet.
-
My body is ready :(y)
It shockingly seems to be a card expansion :o Perhaps something akin to the Messages or Land Surveyors, or a mix.
-
Nice. I like Bang! Expansions and this one looks like one of them. I'm curious when new cars from deck will be taken and to wgich player will be applicable.

Really?

Hunters and Gathers and 20th Anniversary in the pic…
Dual purpose expansion?
-
No clue!
If the actions involved are not tied to specific tiles, this could be an option...
Too many questions. ;)
-
For the full preview, see page 3 of the pdf: https://www.nostheide.de/SDdig/5-Seiten-SpielDoch_02_2021.pdf - :pink-meeple:

Thanks, Allograft! I like the massive tiles the guy in the white t-shirt is carrying in the following page too. That would make an interesting game of Carcassonne!

I don't think so, the junior edition is also on the picture and the rules are so different it'd be difficult to make a single mini working for those three editions. Plus the cards are showing cities and monasteries, that wouldn't work with hunters and gatherers nor with the junior edition :-\
-
It looks like the entire page is just an advertisement for CundCo, hence why there are three different games on the page. But The Gifts is definitely a new expansion, probably intended for distribution at Spielfest before arriving in time for the usual Winter promos on CundCo. Hopefully it is available at the same time the Spiel '21 tile and any new map expansions are available. I also would love to see the Winter Edition with the River, since I bought the Gingerbreadman a few months ago specifically to accompany the new Winter Edition.

Amen and ditto to exactly (all) that! Have Winter Crop Circles too..
Oh and the EN edition of 20th Anniversary maybe emoji code38] or did I just miss it being released? Given up looking for a while..

This is a larger snapshot of the promo ad. What do you think the mechanic can be?
-
Funny think is that on Czech forum was created on same time "Akční karty" (action cards) fan expansions. I guess with same or similar purpose when checking this image.

Oooh new things! Cards are interesting. I was hoping to see Land Surveyors get a physical print though maybe that can be a option in the future. Adding to my list for my winter purchase.
-
I was hoping to see Land Surveyors get a physical print though...
Me too! The mechanics of the PnP work fantastic, but my home-crafted efforts will never meet the same standard as actual punchboard.
-
I have spent several hours staring at the promo image trying to figure out the mechanics of this mini expansion...
This is my current opinion:
* The deck of cards contains a number of extra player actions acting as gifts. These actions are distributed during the setup of the game (no extra tiles seem to be included, so no card draws happen during the game triggered by tiles).
* Players keep their gifts face down in their supply and the can play them on their turn.
* Once a gift is played, it is discarded and removed from the game.
Known actions (from left to right):
1. Draw two tiles and play only one of them. The other is shuffled again.
2. Place a monk (or nun) next to an already placed one (what for in the base game?)
3. Score a highwayman (or traveler) as if at the end of the game and remove it.
4. Turn one knight into a farmer or vice versa. The field and the city must be adjacent.
5. Score a knight as if at the end of the game and remove it, or score 2 points instead (not totally sure about this one).
What do you think?
-
I think 5 might be to score a knight in an unfinished city, but still get 2 points per tile
-
What do you think?
I think the following:
Considering the name of the expansion is "Gifts", I doubt they will simply be distributed at the start of the game like variable player powers - Carcassonne historicly never had this game mechanic with the sole exception being Scout expansion for Hunters & Gatherers. Any time there is something that gives specific players extra actions/perks, it is always awarded based on some action or stipulation, so that everyone has a chance to get it initially e. g. Markets of Leipzig, La Porxada, or Count of Carcassonne.
I fully expect for this deck of cards to either work similarly to the Messages, or, if the cards are permanent, be awared to players based on something they do in the game, perhaps some kind of altruistic behavior like the Count.
As to the actions on the cards themselves it is easy enough to come up with likely candidates, but there are several frames of mind in which one can make these predictions. One is that the effects become permanent once activated, the other is that they are one time actions.
Based on what is depicted I find the following most convincing:
You get the cards during the game (not at the start) as a gift for something you do in the game. You can then play the cards on your turn for a single use effect. The effects from left to right: 1) after drawing a tile, you can play the card to discard the tile you just drew and draw another tile. 2)you can place a monk on an unoccupied, incomplete cloister already in play. 3) you can score one of your incomplete roads and return the robber to your supply. 4) you can remove one of your farmers in play and deploy them on another unoccupied field. 5) you can return one of your knights into your supply and score 2 points.
HOWEVER!
Who cares about the expansion that we will know all about for sure in several weeks. All of you missed the most important thing about this picture! >:D
It contains the tiles and pieces from the 6 minis (so far only available in BB6 in C2) and they now have the clipped cut-off buildings!
Maybe there is a standalone release on the horizon?
EDIT: Meepledrone might be correct on the 4), I interpreted it as if the meeple was just floating in the air just like the other cards, but it might be actually placed in the city. But I think my suggestions are more likely when it comes to the other cards.

I think you are right, you can see a new Gold Mines tile with those ugly clipped buildings :'(

1st mini 20th aniversary tiles with special actions, next mini cards with special actions… next…? It seems this is the year for special actions for carcassonne… hahahaha

Both that and Mage and Witch tile.
And there are also Ferry tiles and Crop Circle tiles on the original picture. A curious concentration of those minis, right?

I think you've got it right, including leaning towards Meepledrone's guess for #4.

I too would like to upgrade from my home crafted PnP to factory punched Land Surveyors!

Here you are the ad in full so you can appreciate the overflowing city segments for the reprinted (?) BB6. You can see this affecting: base game tiles (without easter eggs), Exp. 1 (check the cathedral tile with the pink meeples) and Exp. 2 tiles (the city tile with the black abbot - Whaaat?), River 1,... and all those tiles from Minis #1, #3 (with a ferry on an adjacent field?), #4, #5, #6 and #7...
Is this a foreshadowing of the new normal for C2? Does this mean a new reprint of all major expansions? What about mini expansions? :o
-
Hehehe, thanks for sharing the whole ad Meepledrone!. Really, that ad is a complete mess!

Edit: I created a poll in BGG just to know what people think about it, here is the link in case you want to cast your vote ;) :

Note that in the render, similar to the Peasant Revolts and 20th anniversary edition, also rounder corners for the tiles are featured. It truly is the new standard.
-
Sorry carlium, but I am one of the "I love it!" people, although I feel that is a tad exuberant. And I still am very much a fan of the original Doris Matthäus art. That being said, medieval cities were quite tightly-packed and lived in, and I have felt from the beginning that the cities in Carcassonne look too empty, probably contributing to almost everyone incorrectly calling them castles. These new city formats make it quite clear that you are dealing with a population centre, with people living and working in the narrow streets.
Am I annoyed that the roofs and buildings get cut off? No, not particularly. After all, the city walls have always had a strange perspective and those are heightened where a wall meets another wall. Many of the cities don't even have a gate and some are absolutely tiny rugby/American football balls. So I feel buildings with cut off roofs and walls is really the least of these cities' problems, and none of them bother me much at all.
-
lol, you make me laugh about the football balls! To be honest with you, I am surprised that option is even chosen multiple times in my poll. Most people usually are more attracted by aesthetics, so clipped, incomplete, or abstract things may not be very appealing at some point. In the end, this is just a matter of taste, like the radioactive green change or the dramatic Matthäus-to-Pätzke transition, pleasant for some, unpleasant for others, and completely irrelevant for the rest.
Until now, there are 10.6% of clipped-cities fans out there. Some People Just Want to Watch the World Burn >:D
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
:red-meeple:
-
People are typically very biased regarding such polls. Heck, I am biased. My Carcassonne base game has clipped and densely populated cities, so yeah, I prefer this new direction. Mixing the two styles together can be as disturbing as different shades of green for the grass aesthetic wise. Especially a cathedral in a densely populated city breaks-up the city appearance at the moment, where it almost looks like multiple projects instead of one.
Similarly, and I think that holds for the majority of people, the change to this new course implies as well a mixed bag of art styles when playing with the original Carcassonne V2…
So let’s just say for the sake of my point that cities with clipped buildings do look better and are more realistic. Is that alone worth changing the art style, when already a lot of people are invested in the non-clipped style? The added value of the change is very small and I think will not result in sales going up, while we all, clipped and non-clipped, are now stuck with inconsistencies, harming the game’s table presence (which is one of its major selling points).
In the end, the game just looked fine the way it was.

The expansion is composed by 25 cards and no tiles :o
-
Thanks for the heads-up @inigomartinez!
Not only that, the rules are available for download only!
This is the product (incomplete) description:
Product information "Carcassonne - The Gifts".
With this mini-expansion for our 20th Carcassonne anniversary, you can receive gifts if you help your fellow players ...
The link to the game rules can be found below. [not available yet]
Content: 25 cards "Gifts" (game rules for download only).
So it seems the cards are dealt when a player helps another. No cards dealt at the beginning of the game or when playing a certain tile (no tiles included in the expansion).
EDIT: Extended last comment.
-
Looks like I was right.
-
I wonder how vague they'll define "help a fellow player". I forsee people drawing just those single road tiles and putting it on someone's road and getting a gift. To me that's kinda soft but we'll see.
-
Looks like I was right.
Spot on! :(y) :(y)
-
Looks nice, and the rules are quite clearly explained. Still some questions are turning in my mind :yellow-meeple:
-
The miniexpansion is simple and with simple rules. The rules are simpler than those for messages (a combination of gifts and messages would be interesting) or the city of Carcassonne. The bonuses are simple and easy to us, but it would be annoying to reshuffle the tower dispenser.
The "The Gifts" page from WICA ant the references guides from WICA must be updated.
I would like a 6th type of cardː Receive an official clarification from HiG.
-
Any news on when It will be available? :o

Gifts are opened before placing a tile in 1. Placing a tile. Messages are received after 3. Scoring a feature only (as per the last clarifications). So no side effects for the time being.

Working on it. ;D

Road sweeper and inns... a strategical move.
-
"This expansion was developed for the Carcassonne base game and its rules still apply. You can combine The Gifts with
other expansions; however, there will be no official rules for these combinations. "
Of course.
-
Now that we know the rules, I can confidently say that this expansion will be one of the best produced for Carcassonne in a long time.
The effects of the cards on their own are extremely versatile and potent, not to mention combinations and interactions with other expansions. The pontential is immense, especially thanks to the selective nature of activation - play the card when you decide is the best time to do it. Easily one of the most tactical and even strategic Carcassonne expansions yet.
And do not be fooled by the altruistic stipulation of the gift recieving. The "help" the rules define will almost never be actually beneficial to the player being "helped". It just means that when you mess the other players up with your tile placement , now you will even be rewarded with a gift ;D >:D The power level of Gifts is enormous.
The Gifts expansion will no doubt be one of the meanest and most brutal additions to the world of Carcassonne (at least for competitive players) and I am looking forward to my copy :(y)
-

Yes! Super interesting.
You are playing a card game on top of Carc! In a two-player game, as the Gifts are distributed, you will eventually know exactly what cards are in your opponent’s hand! Early in the game, you could “bluff” by not sweeping a road in the hope that the opponent would think you don’t have that card?
I think the “take 2” cards are relatively weak. “Cash out” gives a disincentive to huge city fights, which I think are often unpleasant. “Change the lie” lets you invade a city with just one tile—wow! I think “Synod” is a great complement to Abbot. And “Road Sweep” seems to make roads really important.
I may make my own temporary set of Gift cards with an old deck of playing cards and give it a try…
Thanks for sharing this!

Not yet as I was waiting.... *really?*... for a bunch of official clarifications affecting Messages.
Should I stop waiting? :o

Road sweeper and inns... a strategical move.
If HiG confirms the scenario used to score the road: during the game or after the game? For the base game, both scenarios are the same for roads, but...
"This expansion was developed for the Carcassonne base game and its rules still apply. You can combine The Gifts with
other expansions; however, there will be no official rules for these combinations. "
Of course.
Prime Directive! Prime Directive!!! :o

Hi ,I have a question about this expansion, when referring to road scoring, can a free road be scored?a road without meeple can be scored?tks for your attention

When it will be available on Cundco?
-
It's already listed, but not yet available. This is common for the new things released at Spiel.
The team have probably been busy returning from Spiel and unpacking, inventory etc.
Expectations are for this new mini expansion to be available in the next few days

Who is in a hurry anyway?
You can play The Gifts with proxy tokens or whatever drawn from a bag, for example.

It’s available at cundco.de now

The Spiel '21 Tile is not available yet though. ;)

That's what I am waiting on as well. Don't want to pay shipping twice for small extras ;)
-
Last year HiG released new stuff for Essen and some new stuff for Christmas... We are still waiting for the Meeple Flags and maybe a mini converted to C2... Let's see if they deliver. >:D
-
I’m also waiting for the Spiel 21 tile and to see if any other mini expansion will be converted &/or released.
-
I'm hoping for one new mini and waiting for the Spiel '21. With a mini, I should just be over €20. I hope they don't push the limit to €25 or higher, though, because there's really nothing else I want. My cart currently has The Gifts, the two 20th Anniversary bags, and 1 pink Abbot (I bought a pink set years ago but never got the pink Abbot since it was pre-2014).
-
I just came across this link where you can see The Gifts will be available in French released by ZMG.

Available around Dec 3rd 2021. Congrats!

I'd love to purchase the new Winter Edition alongside with the Spiel 21 tile. Fingers crossed.

Hi Christian!
It was announced a while back, and quite a few members have been able to get one, or are waiting for the Nicolaus promotion to get one.
It was discussed here:
