I think that 2x2 frame (on BGG) is cropped. Remember that one year 2 consecutive years were given out by mistake, and sold on ebay.  If I remember, a 2015 tile was available in 2014, the following year 2x2016 and 2017 tile was available in 2015. Suggesting they were all printed at the same time.

The Carcassonne versions depend on the different graphic artists for the tiles.
C1 = Doris Matthäus
C2 = Anne Pätzke
C3 = Marcel Gröber

C3 is the new version of the:
- Carcassonne Grundspiel (base game) C3 2021
https://cundco.de/brettspiele/a-c/433/carcassonne-grundspiel-c3-2021-de?c=5

- Jubiläumsedition 2021
https://cundco.de/brettspiele/a-c/383/carcassonne-jubilaeumsedition-2021-de?c=5

- mini Wegweiser (Signposts) 2021
https://cundco.de/mini-erweiterungen/carcassonne/424/carcassonne-die-wegweiser-2021-d/en?c=14

- mini: Die Bauernaufstände (The Peasant Revolts) 2020
https://cundco.de/mini-erweiterungen/carcassonne/357/carcassonne-die-bauernaufstaende-neue-edition-d/en?c=14

- mini cards: Die Geschenke 2021
https://cundco.de/mini-erweiterungen/carcassonne/390/carcassonne-die-geschenke-2021-de/en?c=14

- mini: Halb so wild (triangle tiles) have both artists - that could be the change in 2020.
https://cundco.de/mini-erweiterungen/carcassonne/322/carcassonne-halb-so-wild-neue-edition-de/en?c=14
This mini has both artists: Anne Pätzke and Marcel Gröber

Christof Tisch did the rule layout for a long time and Franz-Georg Stämmele is doing this job now (Start in 2021).

@Kettlefish Do you know Marcel Gröber? I'm just wondering if he is as much into rules as Christof Tisch could have been...  ???

I think that is a great way to differentiate.
As Decar mentioned, the rounded edges are not a good indicator. We've seen this on some C2.1 games, and expansions, and the Mindok version of BB7 does not have them.
It seems that this is more of a publisher/printing thing, that likely started in 2019 (my C2.1 base game with rounded corners is also from 2019)

To me, the main indicator is the art style, which might even be slightly tweaked along the way. Some road corners in C3 have the stone raise, but not all, which is also a tricky call to make.
But i think the best way to indicate a change in artstyle would be the main artists.

The change from the first artwork by Doris Matthäus to the second artwork by Anne Pätzke was very clear. This time, the change to the artwork by Marcel Gröber is maybe more subtle and even gradual, but it could be a great way to indicate where the change started.
To me, this would be as Kettlefish mentioned with the release of Halflings in 2020. You could call it C2.2 if you really want to make a difference between this one and subsequent releases, as Marcel Gröber was the sole credited graphic artist for those, but i've grouped them in C3 in my catalogueing of the game :)

Hey! Finally, this is new: C2 Base game referred to as C3 in German and English:o :o :o

After a couple of weeks with C2 Base game out of stock!

BTW, Any clue on the graphic credits for Cathedrals in Germany? It was released after Halflings so Marcel Gröber should have participated in it as well... But the lack of cities don't help.

EDIT: The description in Engish does not say the copy is in German, but if you add both items to the cart, they are the same product.  :o

I don't know Marcel Gröber. He is at HiG since 2020. The game is 20 years old. I think that explains a lot. I will not exlain more about it. All I can say is, that all the people aren't working any more at HiG who gave me the answers for the clarification of rules.

When I remember correctly Anne Pätzke was working on the Cathedrals.

I like the old watermarks from rules. The only real problems with C3 are the clipped buildings and maybe the rounder corners (if they are too rounded; I never saw a C3 tile in real life).

The monasteries from C3 no longer have crosses?

So The Peasant Revolts is C3, and Halflings and Cathedrals in Germany are C2?

WARNING: I tried to add both C3 base games to the cart and they are the same. CundCo is only selling C3 in German, even if the English description does not specify it.

CundCo Shop: is selling from
The base game and the big expansions are from HiG and they have only German Rules.
The mini expansions are from HIG/CundCo - these expansions have German and English rules.

Correct... They are also offering (as an exception) 20th Anniversary Edition sets with rules in English (only the main part, not the supplement).

Why does Marcel Gröber replaced Anne Pätzke?

That's the question. Anyway. Work of Marcel Gröber is based on Anne Pätzke's tiles made for C2. So basic design is not changed so I think that she has to be also credited, or?

I also thought at this. So, Anne Pätzke is not also credited on C3 boxes?
