Title: Need advice for printing fan made expansions, and which are the best?
Post by: Poron90 on August 15, 2013, 06:17:20 AM
Hi!

I'm a new member in CarcassonneCentral and I've seen there are lots of fan-made expansions to download.

I have tried: "Salt Cocoa Traders", "Kings Orders", "Families" and "Seasons" and I love all of them, specially "Salt Cocoa Traders"

Which expansions do you think I should try next???

Thanks!

Nice to meet you Poron, and enjoy the site.

I'm a fan of 'ORDER OF THE KING' as well, and there are lots of great expansions to try.

One question to keep in mind: Do you want a 'simple' expansion that adds an element or feature but doesn't change gameplay too much, or do you want a 'complex' expansion that changes a lot? Or something in the middle? Here's some of my personal favorites depending on what your answer is:

SIMPLE:
-WELLS by Meepleater
-FARMER IN THE DELL by Carcking

MIDDLE:
-BREWERIES by Meepleater
-THE ABBOT by BT
-FORTUNE TELLER by JPUTT927
-ANIMAL FARM by Carcking
-THE FOREMAN IN THE TOWER variant by Big Guy <--- (me :c)
-FAMILY FEUD original Frederick Renaud (with follow-up by JPUTT in the forums)

COMPLEX
-FOREST series by multiple authors (requires lots of tile creation)
-FATHER TIME by multiple authors
-CAMPAIGN by Whaleyland (requires lots of expansions to fully enjoy)

Thanks a lot Big Guy! I'll try the expansions you've told me. I have tried 'Order of the king' and it's amazing (I made a mistake in my post calling it 'King order').

I have downloaded this two expansions today and I'm waiting for new white tiles to prove them:
-FORTUNE TELLER by JPUTT927
-ANIMAL FARM by Carcking

I have read about 'Forest' and 'Campaign' but I've discarted them cause 'Forest' requires lots of new tiles and 'Campaign' appears to be so confusing.

I'll try all these expansions (specially yours =P)

Thanks a lot!!!

I've finally got some blank tiles, as soon as I get some labels I'm going to be printing a few of these too =D

I really enjoy some of the meeple-only expansions.  You have to pick up the meeples, but I guess you'd have to make tiles too. Plugging my own a bit, but I really do like The Missionary.  It can be really effective and turning the tide of some large feature.  I also enjoy Shepherds quite a bit.  It takes a while to paint the pieces, but it's been worth it.  I also enjoy the Leper.

I haven't made very many outside of my own, but I do nearly always play with The King's Gate and also enjoy Families.  If you look up the Solazy expansions, they are mostly one tile or a few.  I like the Coliseum quite a bit.  I really want to make Fortune Teller and a few others some time soon.

Hey everyone!
Im new to the site, and honestly I'm not sure what took me so long to sign up.  I've been playing carc for around 3 years now and I've been a completest for the most part with the exception of cathars and the corn circles 1 and of course the new stuff released, i have pretty much every expansion... now heres where I'm looking for help.  I've seen some of the fan made expansions and i absolutely wanna print some up.  obviously using bank tiles, whats the best way to print the fan expansions?  sticker paper I'm assuming?  do you go to a print shop?  any help or suggestions would be very appreciated!  and also what are some of the best fan expansions to use? I'm looking into forests and mountains right now... thanks for your help in advance! - Jay

Welcome to the CarC :)

I use Adobe Photoshop to make colour adjustments and print with a laser printer on HERMA Outdoor adhesive film No. 9500. This is a rather expensive label sheet, but it’s worth it. Earlier I have printed some of the fan-expansions on cheaper labels sheets, but they don't looks so good anymore.  >:(

I don't use blank tiles when I make my homemade tiles. When we play mega-Car we use approximately 50/50 with original and homemade tiles, then it doesn’t matter if you can se if it’s an original or a fan-made tile that is next in the stack. For the tiles I use the cardboard that's used to make the mat around pictures when framing, which I have bought in an art-shop.

Forests and Mountains are great expansions, but in my experience you need to make a lot of tiles to make them work in a game. I would start with the The Pope of Avignon (2 tiles), The Medieval Expansion (12 tiles) and The House of Valois (no tiles only two meeples).

Anyone have a current source of blank tiles?

Carcassonne Shoppe sells them, I believe. Ditto for Z-Man. I think its about $2 or $3 a sheet, maybe?

Welcome to the forums!  :(y)

If you're in Europe your best bet is almost certainly www.cundco.de (1,49 EUR for a sheet of 12 means you can buy 6 sheets for a total of 72 tiles for less than 10 EUR, then postage will be a few EUR on top)

Thought it might be nice to list our favourite un-official expansions ^-^. For me, it's these three —

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/406/19017071895_4008bcf064_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/uYtsVV)

1.)
Family Feud (http://carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=499.0). Tiles with a red/yellow pennant cannot be added to a city with blue/white pennants and vice versa.

2.)
Black Tower (http://carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=519.0). The dark tower pieces can be used to capture diagonally whereas the flat pieces are used to cap the tower (no more tower pieces can be added). Can't remember what I used the pewter ones for :))

3.)
Apothecaries and Tithes (http://carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=613.0). I only use the Apothecaries part, similar mechanics as the wine/grain/cloth tokens.

Is there are a really simple and slighter cheaper way to print off these tiles whilst keeping a good quality finish? I don't really have access to Photoshop or a very good quality printer, but do have 6 blank tiles ready to go!

There are some good freeware image editing software out there.  I personally use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program, mind you) and Paint.Net (pretty much a hugely expanded upon Microsoft Paint with more tools, layers, and features).  They won't replace Photoshop, but they're great for what they are.  Though, full sheet label paper is pretty expensive, at least in the states.  You might also want to check your local office stores and shipping stores to see what kind of deals they offer for printing out stuff.
