Great report from both of you. As a fellow Brit my heart is saddened by the result but at the same time don't let that diminish my congratulations to Merlin on what was a resounding victory - well done! You both certainly have plenty of skill it's a shame someone had to lose!

Congratulations Merlin! And commiserations Dan. I definitely know the feeling when you just can't get into a game and do anything to stop your opponent piling on points.

So after many months of festivities and celebrations worldwide, and record viewing audiences across the globe, the World Cup has come to an end and we will all shed a few tears. Until next year...

Edit: Forgot about the 3rd-4th playoff.

When you lose, do not look at what you lost, but what's left to win ..

Congratulations to Merlin! You showed great play during the World Cup! :(y)
And commiserations to Dan. I was on your place last year :-\
3 hours are not so much - it's about 1 minute per tile.
When MrsNumbers first time saw the set of the expansions for the final game, she predicted that winner of that game will be with 100+ points margin. She was right! :D Let's see, how her own game with farin will end ;)

Thanks JB! That's how it felt, although I know I made mistakes too and don't want this to detract from Merlin's consistently high standard of play and effective strategy.

I tended to forget about the fairy and only really moved her on the rare occasions that I scored anything. This made it too easy for Merlin to benefit from her, simply by keeping control of the fairy from turn to turn and getting a bonus point each time. On other occasions I didn't spot some easy tower captures until it was too late, or missed some good farming opportunities (one I completely messed up and was lucky even to get 3 points for it where I could have expected 9 or more).

And commiserations to Dan. I was on your place last year :-\

Yes, it’s a pretty rough place to be but I can’t feel too annoyed as I used up more than my fair share of luck just to get to the final in the first place! Plus, it’s probably better that I came second as it sounds like I have a lot more experience at losing than Merlin, and so am better equipped to deal with it! ;D Still though, 103 points. Ouch :( :-[

When MrsNumbers first time saw the set of the expansions for the final game, she predicted that winner of that game will be with 100+ points margin. She was right! :D

I had the feeling that with this much going on it could easily turn out to be quite one-sided too. It could have been a mere 99 point loss if not for Merlin using the dragon to eat my phantom monk with his last tile of the game though. This just added insult to injury, but as was the theme of the game for me, he skilfully made sure that there was nothing I could do to stop him...

Let's see, how her own game with farin will end ;)

Good luck to both players! Have you arranged a date for this match yet?

Congrats to the new World Champion! Merlin_89!  :(y)  Also congrats for becoming the new Elo leader, which is quite an achievement in just 2 tournaments! Great job!

Few words for Dan. Looks like this game has been tough for you... I know the feeling. But for many of us, with everything you do here, you were already a World Champion! Again many thanks for organising this!  :(y)  Can't wait for the next tournament. Don't forget that most of the participants haven't played competitively for weeks/months, so hopefully early next year! In the meantime, you deserve to rest.  ;)

Congratulations to Merlin!! Now I have a fellow World Cup Champ! It doesn't have to be lonely at the top anymore! haha

Dan...commiserations my friend. That is a tough way to lose. Myself and many of us have been on the receiving end of those kinds of games. You just can't get anything going and the tiles don't seem to come. Ah well, on to the next one. Thank you for putting this all together. It was fun to be a part of it.

(Merlin, PM your address and I can get this trophy off the mantel. BTW, you are now my wife's new favorite!  :o )

I just drew the perfect tile for my MonKnighThieFarmer!

By the way, if I am not mistaken, we didn't have a chance to see a photo of previous World Cup owner yet! ::)

I know, I know...I am delinquent...but a photo is forthcoming. Especially now that I have to relinquish the trophy. :)

Ah, that would be anyone who got the trophy off the mantel. It doesn't take much to please her  :o

I think it's time for me to thank you for all kind words I got from you... What can I say, it was super nice!  :(y)

I can't wait for the postman visit with the package from USA from Carcking, 2016 will start with a blast!

How's it going with scheduling 3rd place game? It'd be interesting to see how that match rolls out...

I am truly sorry that the trophy that I made with so much love did not like your wife :)
