Title: Previewing footnotes on WICA
Post by: NGC 54 on October 30, 2022, 02:22:55 PM
WikiCarpedia contains a lot of footnotes. In order to read them, you have to click them, and doing so redirects you at the bottom of the page. Something like Reference Previews (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Reference_Previews) or Reference Tooltips (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Reference_Tooltips) would allow the reader to preview them.

I've enabled extensions:popups (aka previews), just thinkering with it. Let me know if it's okay.

@Meepledrone made some test for inline references. Can't find URL for it.

The footnotes that popup now are quite nicer then having the inline always there :)

Go at https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Main_Page#Base_game_set. Hover over the text "Base Game". You will see an (empty) popup. The issue is that Popup extension enables both Page Previews (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Page_Previews), that is not needed on WICA, and Reference Previews, that is needed on WICA. Maybe there is a way to disable Page Previews while keeping Reference Previews enabled?

Pagepreviews sadly won't work on the mainpage, but work everywhere else. Due to the strange way of templating. You can join the conversation at Discord about this.

It does not work at https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Ghosts,_Castles_and_Cemeteries#Other_expansions. Nor at https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Inns_and_Cathedrals#Other_expansions or https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Cathedrals_in_Germany_(1st_edition)#Other_expansions. In any case, I do not think that WICA really needs popups for pages. It needs popups for footnotes, but for pages?

This was the test...

https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Base_Game_-_Test_Inline (https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Base_Game_-_Test_Inline)

It may be okay on desktop, but too many boxes to skip on mobile... So I put this idea on hold.

The idea was to move footnotes up in the text as close as possible to where they were referenced. Footnotes on pop-ups are a great alternative, but I agree with
@Sinscerly they don't work fine in all cases.
