Title: Carcassonne Tile Grids
Post by: Carcatronn on February 16, 2021, 10:54:43 AM
Stumbled across this on Etsy and found it reminiscent of the failed Kickstarter someone tried getting funded with the same idea - anyone here happen to use these yet?

I noticed similar tile grids on a Dutch second hand website aswell.
Never really thought of using them, although the description there said they could be useful for moving your game in progress without disturbing it.
That sounded like a potentially useful use for these grids, although I doubt it will be needed that much

Similar drigs printed on 3D printer was alaible also on Slovak second-hand web site. But in black and with smaller lines. I thing that version was better, not so disturbing like this one.
Here empty space for tile is very "white".

But it can be usefull when want to "move" board due to reach edge of table

Yeah I was thinking the same thing - white empty spaces aren’t as appeasing to the eye. The failed Kickstarter had black ones, so that might be better. However, would these just be annoying to get out and do they really make a difference? I feel like our games aren’t THAT sloppy, but my OCD does kick in when someone bumps a column  ;D

A few years ago I asked Basically Wooden if they could assist here.

They came up with these:

One of the biggest issues is having enough boards to cover a reasonable size game.

I'm worried about grids and double-sized tiles....  :-\

Does somebody have a good argument for the existence of this product?
It seems to just produce potential problems with no benefit...

I would compare it to a spiky door handle - you buy it to inconvenience yourself.

Originally,  I asked BW for these, not for general play, but for a very specific case needing a fixed
 area of play.

But, they do inadvertently solve the problem of table-edge-Carcassonne. They provide a slightly extendable table edge  ;D

I assume the grids would sfisfy anyOCD requirements about perfect tile alignment but also would allow you to shift around you playing area as required. Did anyone try the latter?

These may also benefit in case there is a home intruder during a Carcassonne game...function as throwing stars? They would not expect it.

Well, my cat currently found shortcut between stairs and his place with food.

And guess, which one?

It is jumping from stairs to table - our board game arena - and then to floor.

So the current practical uses far the grid are:
-extending playing area of your table by few centimeters
-throwing stars
-preventing table bumps or jumping pets
-solving OCD specifically for those who want perfectly aligned tiles, but do not mind white gaps.

Downsides:
-does not help with any practical problems you are likely to encounter.
-creates numerous additional problems of its own.
-you have to pay for it.

 ???
In short, I don't see many people using this.

Good for Carcassonne fans that live / play on boats I imagine - probably happy to sacrifice playing with German Castles to have tiles stay in place while boat rocks emoji code846]
