Glasses for color blindness
« on: April 09, 2021, 07:20:47 AM »
Hi guys,

I just came across this article by chance and wanted to share it, especially with those of you with some degree of color blindness.

I don't know if you already heard about the EnChroma glasses. They use a filter to cut out the overlapping light wavelengths that cause poor color discrimination, allowing for a clearer distinction between colors, especially red and green.

https://www.technologyreview.com/2016/06/27/159088/how-enchromas-glasses-correct-color-blindness/#:~:text=Color%2Dblindness%20is%20often%20a,colors%2C%20especially%20red%20and%20green.

What do you think?

Just a video of people trying the glasses on...

The reactions are amazing!

this is a major subject for those with color blindness that we never think about, bravo Meepledrone for having thought about it
this reminds me of a true story,
Many years ago I was chatting with a friend and offered him a kitten, because I had a litter of small cats at home, on which he replied "but you gave me one 1 year ago"
surprised by this oversight I ask him what color, he replies "green, with stripes"
indeed it was a tabby kitten that I had given him

After coming across all this, I was thinking of all things we take for granted!  :-\

What? Aren't tabby cats always green?  ;)  :green-meeple:

I kept looking into the subject. The glasses work for Protanomaly (reduced sensitivity to the red color) and Deuteranomaly (reduced sensitivity to the green color).

A guy has two interesting videos on Youtube, where he explains color blindness and tries the glasses on and reviews how his perception of color changes:

Part 1 - How Colour Blindness Works

Part 2 - Do Color Blind Glasses Really Work?

Do you have the red-green color blindness these glasses address?

'Correct' doesn't seem like the right word to use in this case.

What is being corrected?

Is colourblindness wrong?

Compensate, support, distinguishing perhaps.

I'm pretty sure correcting colour blindness has limited success and will requite multiple complex surgeries at the very least.   :(

I do not suffer from colorblidness, but I am well familliar with EnChroma glasses.
It is true that they aim to help protans and deutans better distinguish individual hues. Healthy humans have three types of cones in their retina: L cones, M cones abd S cones.
These have different sensitivities to certain wavelengths of light, and when activated, the brain interprets the ratio of triggered cones as color. The cones naturally have overlaps in their responsivness, which is why you are abe to read the screen you are currently viewing, despite it emiting only a limited number of colors.
The L cones of protans, and M cones of deuterans have anomalous responsivity and have greater overlap than normal.
What EnChroma glasses actually do is filter out the light corresponding to the wavelengths, in which there is greatest overlap between L and M cones (see Figure 1, adopted from Gómez-Robledo et al., 2018). Therefore only the wavelengths that strongly activate just one type of cone pass through, and your brain can supposedly differentiate them easier.

That said several studies exploring the effectivness of EnChroma glasses conclude that there is no significant improvement in color perception. You can change the appearance of some colors which were difficult to see, but at the cost of the others.
Of course you might still find them useful in certain situations, or enriching in general.

Gómez-Robledo, L., Valero, E. M., Huertas, R., Martínez-Domingo, M. A., Hernández-Andrés, J. (2018). Do EnChroma glasses improve color vision for colorblind subjects?. Opt. Express 26(22): 28693–28703.

I agree completely... Sorry for using a wrong word in this case. Compensating would have worked better. Hope nobody felt offended. I updated the subject of the topic.

These glasses just help to tell colors apart in certain cases. I had in mind the discussions we had about what meeple colors worked better for some color-blind forum members such as cicerunner:

Just a thought: color blindness is a misnomer in itself...  :o

Ah, OK!

DIN0 made a great summary on what the issue is regarding processing the wavelength in the eye, and how the glasses block some of the frequencies to help the brain tell colors apart more easily.

So glasses are an aid but do not correct the problem. As you mentioned, they compensate the cones in the eye for those cases with red-green color blindness. It is not a correction, since it is not permanent.

The first article mentioned another company manufacturing contact lenses to do the same trick.

So I was thinking if the glasses would be of any help when play Carcassonne: Brighter colors on the tiles, telling reds and greens better, wider range of colors when picking meeples... That sort of things.

I think some people may indeed find them useful for Carcassonne. There are several things which I can imagine would blend together if you have increased overlap in L and M cones. Red, Purple, Green and Lightgreen meeples might be particularly difficult to tell apart, as well as roofs of C1 cities (C2 cities are better in this regard). The glasses do not improve the number of hues you can percieve at any given time, but they can change which type you can/cannot see. So I can see a scenario where you would don the glasses for the game of Carcassonne.

I wonder if the dark blue grass from Darmstadt, German Castles, Cathedrals and Dutch Monasteries HiG edition, is easier to tell apart from the cities, than other shades of grass. Cities do have a great deal of red in them, so green grass would blend, but not so much grass with greater blue content.

In daylight I don't have any issues with the colours of the meeples. In artificial light then green, red and brown are problem combinations.
