Carcassonne Central

I wish for an exclusive Carcassonne Central edition of the Carcassonne game.
So... Be careful what you wish for...
After i posted my wish, Decar actually granted it!
Granted. But unfortunately 73 people want to take part, and only 70 tiles get submitted. But at least the rules are consistent.
But we started talking on our CarcC discord channel, and several of us got more and more enthusiastic about actually making something like that happen!
So it's still early days in the idea, but i'm thinking the following:
- We have people who are interested to join in sign up
- Everyone gets assigned 1 or more tile(s) from the standard base game (amount depending on the amount of participants)
- Everyone may recreate their tile(s) artistically, with their own input. This can be a simple decoration, a personal memory of Carcassonne or a nice Easter Egg to Carcassonne Central
- For now, no additional rules for the tiles (otherwise you'd get 72 expansions basically)
As i am personally not great with the actual art portion of it (designing the tiles, actually printing them, etc), i think it would be good if we can have a guide available from our forum ranks who can help people with their design. This can be either by posting a guide, or sharing templates, or even going so far as to actually making the design come to life. (note, this is tbd, as i can't offer that myself so would be depending on if someone can/wants to do so and in what capacity).
We can start with the aim for a digital version of it, which can be available for people on the forum to download/print&play.
I'd love to organise an actual printed version of it (even alone due to the fact that i can't print myself), but that is for later.
Also, and this would be especially if we can organise a printed run, Dan came up with the idea of having the contributing members sign a scoreboard. Details tbd, but it can be something we pass around, so everyone who contributes shares in making this a reality.
So.... Dreams of a madman? Or maybe even a visionary (i wouldn't go that far)?
Anyone interested in joining this project?
-
Sounds like a fun idea, maybe hard to actually bring to fulfillment.
But I guess it's woth a try.
I have absolutely no experience on the artistic side when it comes to developing Carcassonne tiles, but given a comprehensible explanation I would certainly try my best ;D
-
I would be interested! But how does one take part in the project? How are tiles assigned? And is it plausible to make the tile in a way I want, or am I required to adhere to a common style? I have no experience in making realistic looking Carcassonne artwork, but I sure could make my own interpretation.
The result would be more mosaic then consistent, but that is what I would actually like about the CarcassonneCentral version of Carcassonne! Everyone to express themselves. :orange-meeple:
-
This is a really nice idea and I'd love to see the result :yellow-meeple:
But design isn't my cup of tea so I'll not participate in the process (and anyway, with a recently born second child at home and house move to prepare, time is... Well... A rarity)
-
I'd like a CRFR tile please!
-
Wait, so is this how we get them :o ? In that case I would like a CCFF splitter.
-
I'm inn. ;)
Any tile suites me, as long as there is a part of the field! :@
-
4 people in for the adventure so far...
Hadn't thought of how to assign tiles necessarily. I'll start making an overview of available tiles later so we can see who's got which :)
Dan, Meepledrone, you areit in too right? :D
-
Of course. You know I'm
it in!!! ;)
-
I would like to join as well :)
My suggestion is to draw tiles (as you would in normal Carcassonne game ;) ) and not choose, one at a time, that will allow more people to join in later on, if not, current participants will draw next ones till it will be completed.
The starting tile could be made last, poll for best candidate based on already made tiles would determine who should do it, same goes for scoring track, or this one could be "patched" together. What you think?
-
After the idea was shared, an image came to my mind where artwork of the tiles could be simpler so anyone could contribute... I prepared these samples with Excel...
Maybe the original idea was to stick to C1 or C2, but, just in case, here is a quick example of what you can do just coloring cells and adding some characters to add a little detail...
-
I would rather avoid, this being a competition. I would suggest to just keep track of participants and their tiles for now - seems like Willem is already onto it :D
I am sure we will fill the ranks as time goes on.

These images take me back to my childhood days playing video games on the old 16 bit Atari... Can we add a dragon from the game Adventure?? ;D

Feel free to do whatever you feel like... but avoid anything that may infringe a 3rd party copyright...
I attached the "tile generator" file... just for fun! ;)
PS: Copy & Paste is awesome...

Dan, Meepledrone, you areit in too right? :D
Totally! Please can I have a straight road? I have a plan...
Of course. You know I'm it in!!! ;)
Ha ha ha :))

I am sure we will fill the ranks as time goes on.
The artwork is not decided yet... We are discussing on Discord taht maybe we can mix artworks... I just suggested something very basic that amy allow anyone to create tiles with no graphic background...
Still waiting for more people to join in.
-
Pretty interesting idea :) I like it
Just a thought here about art:
What if we look for one freelance artist that is willing to help us with all 72 tiles in BGG or Fiverr.
Each forum member involved in the project will designs the tile layout (including some crazy stuff), and each forum member actually pay the artist for their tile. Some artist online can charge between 10 to 30 USD per one high resolution illustration.
The more crazy tile design is, the more expensive it will be, obviously. I think a project like this can be a around 600 to 1000 USD for an freelancer artist (with no commercial rights and weird stuff like that), and considering that a lot of graphical components will be repeated (walls, basic roads, trees, grass) could make the process more cost efficient.
I know that managing this can be a total nightmare, but... 8)

Nope... This is just a way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Carcassonne as fans...
A crazy initiative. ;)

I think they allow us to make our own tiles as long as we don't try to sell anything to anyone. That wouldn't be the case with this. It would be purely a vanity project for ourselves.
-
For example, this is your opportunity to create C2-ish tiles with a less flubber-y green, if that pleases you. :o
-
I will just quickly restate my opinion/idea on what the goal should be - that is to allow each participant to make the tile in their preferred style (by that I mean their personal style, not C1/C2), in order to express themselves. That is what I believe CarcassonneCentral Edition shoud be.
Of course if Meepledrone creates some kind of system for making artwork and some people opt to use it instead of making the art in some other way, that is nice as well.
I just wouldn't go the route of codifying a single style for this crazy project. Will the end result look little incoherent that way? Sure, but it will be a true representation and expression of the community. :orange-meeple:
-
I want to make CRRR or CCRR with pennant and shed in Fancarpedia shapes!
-
For example, this is your opportunity to create C2-ish tiles with a less flubber-y green, if that pleases you. :o
Then I will like a fusion of C1 and C2 into a new C3 >:D
-
Sorry, late update!
Yes, i think it is best to leave it to each member to do it in their preferred style. We'll end up with a mixture of C1, C2, exCel, etC ;)
We can explore things like a freelance artist at a later stage, as this would be tricky enough i think hahaha
I'll make sure to have a list of tiles and will start assigning tiles.
The completed tiles/art can be returned to me by email, and i'll keep us all updated here. Depending on the amount of people who want to be in the project, i'll assign multiple tiles to some people. And i'll keep some tiles open for people who join later.
As the art style is free to the person, the only thing i would ask for is a square image, and keep in mind that any details you want to put in have to be clear enough to be seen in a small image, otherwise your hard work can get lost ;)
-
Great Willem!
I signed up for CCFF splitter, but I am willing to take some more if needed (I suspect some duplicates of multicopy tiles as FRFR or FFRR will be leftover).
-

I would add that any art on the edge of tiles needs to be (or adequately match up to) a Road, a City, or a Field in order to retain compatibility. While the art and colors and everything else may change, the tile edges still need to be able to line up.
-
Yes, indeed.
Everyone will get a tile configuration assigned. So they have got a base layout that they can then play with.
But the roads, cities and fields are predefined to keep it compatible with all other tiles. We'll use a standard base game config for it :)
-
Any preferred dpi for the images: 300dpi or 600dpi?
-
I m in too, good idea :)

Any update on this? There haven't been any posts here for over a month... ;)
-
I have prepared an excel with all the tile distribution.
For some reason I was too lazy to check here who have signed up so far, so haven't done much.
But yes, I will post an update in the coming days!
And if anyone wants to join the fun; let me know below!

Ohhhhh I was missing this!!!!
Last night it came back like a flash to my mind! O0

Seems was yesterday… hahahaha

I'm still onboard. You will find me in the previous posts ;)

Whichever tile I'd get assigned it'll be LEGO Mosaic. :yellow-meeple:
-
Ok, update time!
If i counted/read correctly, we have 12 people (including myself) signed up so far. If i've missed you, please shout out below and you will be added. If you haven't signed up yet but want to, also shout out below please!
The idea is (hopefully) pretty straightforward. You are assigned a tile (and yes, you can ask for a specific one if available) from the base game, and you can do with that what you want. As long as the basic tile configuration is the same, feel free to let your imagination go wild. Add little features, easter eggs, or even just a picture of you and your moustache.
You are also free to make any type of artwork. C1, C2, C2.1, C2.2, C3.14; whichever you prefer. Meepledrone has shared a great example of how to make the tiles in Excel, which can be really nice as well.

Nice!
Can I also claim a ffff cloister if there are tiles going spare?

The Google image tile is quite creative Meepeldrone!
Also, can I claim one extra crrr tile in addition to my previous one? I just had a perfect idea.

Looking great so far! i had to look twice (and hold my phone a bit further away from my face), but loving that meeple tile :D
I've added the tiles for Dan and DINO, and also added Wolnic with 2 cloisters. (As we said, if you want more, just let me know. There's 2 more cloisters up for grabs)
15 tiles gone, enough to go around for anyone else interested!
-
All these are available, if you want them... ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/fRDEsdy.png)
I can even create more.
-
Oh I am on vacation for some time, so I wont be able to make one the next weeks.
Some time has passed because CarcC went down, so I didn't think it would happen during this period.
In case anyone wants to take my tile they can!
And otherwise I will make one at the end of August :))
P.S. are there any tutorials on how to make tiles? Because right now, my only option would be excel ;D
-
Well, you've seen other options: pictures using meeples or Google Maps... Anything goes ;D
You've seen DIN0's proposal... :(y) :(y)

Or my Google Map proposal with some heavy image editing - the fields were brown (I could remove those nasty fields too):

Thanks! I estimated it would be more obvious when shrunken to the actual tile size (45x45 mm).
Thank you for adding my new tile. Also if nobody claims the CCFF+, feel free to use my meeple tile :green-meeple: :brown-meeple: :neutral-meeple:

I will not participate (realy bad at desing), but I love to see the result

Been playing around with some of the artistic effects in Photoshop ... perhaps not as "different" as some previous examples. This one uses the Stained Glass effect.

Looks nice!

My contribution, i hope you got the reference >:D

Is it possible to make it a little brighter? I almost can't see anything.

Is it too late for me to join? If it isn't then can I have the river lake tile?
-
It's never too late! (Well, until the base game is finished)
For now we've only got the base game, which quite a few tiles still available.
If you want to pick a specific base game tile, you can see on the previous page what has already been assigned. Or I can assign a tile to you of course ;D
-
I'd like a RFFR tile then.
-
Sure! I've added you in the overview post on page 3 :)
-
You know what, you can add the CCFF+ to my list, since I already made the meeple tile out of it. And that will be the last tile for me - I don't want to take too many fom others :D
-
I have a CCFF (like Paul's but without pennant), CFCF with separate fields (or the version with pennant), CRRF and CCCC in progress should they be required (although the styles can be applied to other tile configs if looking to fill in gaps at the end).
-
Ok, i've updated the overview post to reflect this.
21 tiles have been assigned!
There's enough tiles still free to go around, so if anyone wants to join, or add another tile to their list, just let me know below.
-
@Willem You can assign these to me too besides the FRFR tile... ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/fRDEsdy.png)
I think the river will stay on hold fo the time being...
-
Sorry Meepledrone, but both CCFF+ tiles are already assigned to Paul and me respectively :(. But regular CCFF (no pennant) still has 2 copies left, so maybe you could slightly modify your design?
-
Of course, no problem!
-
I prepared this Excelssonne sample just for fun... ;)

How's everyone getting along with their tiles? I hope all is going smoothly!
We haven't really set an end date by when the tiles should be in, but I'll be pm-ing people with how to share their tile designs with me
Also, if you have ideas for more tiles, do let me know below, as we still have quite some tiles open! (See the overview post on page 3 to see which have been assigned)
-
Are there still openings to join in? - :pink-meeple:

Of course!
Just let me know which tile you have preference for (if any), or otherwise I can assign a tile to you!

Updated the post on page 3 with your assigned tile!
Also, i'm gonna start PMing the participants with the ways on how to share your tiles with me. If you want more tiles, you still can! Lots of tiles left :)

Here's my offering, though it is far from art.
The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem:
All who come to pray at the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre shall find redemption where Christ was crucified. When the city is completed, the winner gets most points according to the regular scoring rules, including Expansion 1's CCCC urban Cathedrals. However, all other occupants of the completed city get one point per tile and shield because of God's grace. At the end of the game, if the city with the Chapel is incomplete, then the occupant of the Chapel gets full points for all the features in the city, which differs from the regular rules, and all the other occupants still score points for an incomplete city as they are in the Grace and Favor of the Lord.
Additionally, our God is loving and forgiving God, and the Chapel REVERSES the effect of those who would bring war to the Holy City. Any Siege tiles (Katharer, Beleagurer, the Siege) amplify the points, as opposed to decreasing. A city with the Chapel and one siege tile would get 3 points per tile and shield for (s)he who claimed the Chapel. A city with the Chapel and a Cathedral would get 4 points per shield. A city with a Chapel and 3 sieges would get 5 points per tile and shield.
Moreover, since God is powerful, any cloister that has any part of a connected city with the Chapel in the surrounding 8 tiles receives 3 bonus points, similar to a vineyard.
Finally, our God is a jealous God. For any heretical shrine whose 8 surrounding tiles touches the city that contains the chapel, the heretic is vanquished from the shrine immediately with no points and all are forbidden to re-enter, for example with a flier.
-
Actually, I think that I want to make some changes.
Does anyone have a high-res version of the following tiles and token?
C2-S
C2-Min4E
C2-Min5A
C2-Sch01
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for good software editing tools for Mac, preferably free. Especially one that can do gradients. - :pink-meeple:
-
Although not free, I use Photoshop Elements, which (in my case) is at a price I'm willing to spend for all (and more of) the graphical tools I need - currently around 70 pounds sterling.
It has most of the standard Photoshop tools and effects, including gradients.
-
Ouch, maybe in retirement. For now, I just want to do one tile. I'm a lawyer, not an artist....yet. - :pink-meeple:
-
Alright, it is time... time to revive this project. I have been quite busy lately, but this has been in the back of my mind for a long time and I have been working on my contribution. I wish to see this happen, so I am gradually going to post my finished tile artwork for the ones I took.
Here is the updated final version of my ccff+ tile some of you had seen before:
-
No reactions at my attempted revival? Nobody has any news? What of the project? :white-meeple: I would love to get this going again.
Currently, there are 23/72 tiles accounted for:
crfr (1/4)
frfr (2/8)
ffff (3/4)
ccff-S (1/2)
ccff-J+ (2/2)
ccff-J (1/3)
crrr (1/3)
ccrr (0/3)
ccrr+ (1/2)

cccr+ (1/2)
rrrr (0/1)
cfcf-J (0/1)
cfcf-J+ (0/2)
frrr (0/4)
cccf (0/3)
cccf+ (0/1)
-
Sorry! This has really gone on the back burner!
I have received several tiles already from several people, and would of course still love to expand (pun intended) this list!
Everyone is welcome to join in!
-
How many finished tiles do we have at this point, counting my meepletile?
-
So after a little break I post another tile from my assigned list. I have also decided to take on 3 extra tiles to move things along, since I have several interesting ideas. I take rrrr, cfrr and crrf tiles. Here is the updated list of assigned and remaining tiles. Please feel free to post here which tile(s) you would like to produce for this community project.
Now, there are 27/72 tiles accounted for:
crfr (1/4)
frfr (2/8)
ffff (3/4)
ccff-S (1/2)
ccff-J+ (2/2)
ccff-J (1/3)
crrr (1/3)
ccrr (0/3)
ccrr+ (1/2)
cfff (1/5)
cfrr (2/3)
ffrr (3/9)
fffr (1/2)
cfcf-S (1/3)
crrf (2/3)
cccc+ (1/1)
cccr (0/1)
cccr+ (1/2)
rrrr (1/1)
cfcf-J (0/1)
cfcf-J+ (0/2)
frrr (1/4)
cccf (0/3)
cccf+ (0/1)
And with that allow me to present my second tile (after the meepletile). I decided to incorporate my avatar picture into the artwork to make it seem as if it lays on the field. That is why I call this one collagetile.
PS: I will be making some houserules for these tiles as has been suggested in the opening post of this topic.
EDIT: Added kothmann's tile.
-
+1 merit from me for keeping this alive.
I’ll take a FRRR, please.
-
Yes! Sorry sorry sorry!
I've received tiles from Wolnic and from Linsux already, and let's get this project back up and running for the rest of the tiles!
-
One tile per person I presume? We all need to cajole our friends!
-
people can have more than 1 tile, so we don't have to force 72 people into joining in ;)
-
Indeed. I only summarized the numbers of assigned tiles, but I believe Willem has the list of all of the users and which tiles they have. I would be interested in knowing how many of the assigned tiles have been completed?
I will post my third tile one week from now. It is quite special so prepare yourselves ;)
-
I’ll take a FRRR, please.

House Rules:
- Player may not deploy a thief to any road on the tile for fear of being stung by a bee.
- Player may deploy a farmer in any field on the tile, with the usual restrictions. At final scoring, a farmer on this tile scores +1 for each completed city, regardless of who scores the farm points for having majority control of the field. Everyone loves honey!
people can have more than 1 tile, so we don't have to force 72 people into joining in ;)
I have a couple more ideas >:D, but I'm also totally okay if you don't use whatever I end up making. I'll wait to claim the other tiles until I actually do the "art", but they will definitely be just road and field tiles.
-
I’ll take a FRRR, please.
File attached 700x700 pixels and also linked from google drive. I tried to keep it simple, using only red poppies hand-sketched in Notability on my iPad, plus a free and unrestricted download from kindpng.com, with everything else done using basic drawing elements in PowerPoint. Comments or suggestions welcomed!

House Rules:
- Player may not deploy a thief to any road on the tile for fear of being stung by the bee.

Nice tile @kothmann!
And I need to stop postponing with all my projects, your tile looks smiliar to one of mine from and unannounced yet big fan expansions, it will have wild flowers (https://i.imgur.com/l2Fasx6.png), there will be 4 different types of flowers, tokens for players, and similiary they will give +2 for farmers, even without majority + mechanic for other features that I will explain in separate topic.
-
Nice one kothmann!
I am slightly confused at "in addition to, or instead of,", when would the "instead of" case come into play?
The only suggestion I can think of is maybe making the bees bigger? On a printed tile, they will probably be tiny.

If the player does not score farm points because they do not have majority control, they still get the beekeeper points. I had initially written “…regardless of farmer majority” but thought it wasn’t clear. :-[
I’m open to suggestions for how to say this clearly and concisely.

Thanks. I guess since you can’t use the the same scale as the pigs on two of the FRRR tiles, inevitably the bees will be huge, so you may as well just make them clearly visible.

I think the original wording was much clearer :(y)
I also had an idea we can all discuss. Currently, only 1 out of 4 crfr tiles is taken. Obviously one of the remaining 3 will have to be starting tile, so why not make it extra special and thematic? Here is my proposal:
Reserve one of the crfr tiles as a starting tile and make it a mosaic made out of Carcassonne-related photos contributed by the members of the CarcassonneCentral. That way, even those who did not wish to make their own artwork for indivisual tiles can contribute to CarcCentral edition. Additionally whenever we finally come around to making the physical copies, our artwork will inevitably be printed onto blank tiles which all have standard backs. I would suggest taking the starting tiles to some event and have KJW sign the back of them - this will make it easy to differentite the starting tile and it will bring extra flavor to the CarcCentral edition.

This sounds great! Love the sample tile,
I bought these tokens (https://www.meeplesource.com/proddetail.php?prod=WingspanNectar-15Mixed) a while ago and did lots of experiments with deploying them to tiles, instead of making new flower tiles. But nothing resulted in a compelling addition.

I’ll be eager to see what you’ve come up with!

As promised I release the last one of the first batch of my tiles for the Carc Central edition project.
I have a very important question for all of you: "Do microbes play Carcassonne? ???"...
The answer is yes! Of course they do ;D
Allow me to present my masterpiece - the microbe tile 8) The unassuming crrr tile takes this new luminous form of glowing goodness. But looks are decieving... this tile was not made using paint nor any digital means. I painted this tile using bacteria producing red and green fluorescent proteins :green-meeple: :red-meeple: After a couple of days of growth and a little excition from an ultraviolet (UV) source, the tile literally lighted up in my hands :D
This has been my most thought out tile yet and I hope you will like it, as much as I had fun designing it.
Tile is in the attachment. I also include the picture of fluorescent bacterial cultures I made the tile from.
PS: If you're interested in the technique, it's called microbial art.

Allow me to present my masterpiece…
Indeed! +1 merit from me. House rules?
Also I somehow missed your amazing meeple tile! Love that one, too.
-
Thanks!
Yes, the house rules for my tiles are the following:
Meepletile:
anyone who places a follower or special figure onto this tile, immediatelly recieves +1 point for every figure (follower or special figure) in his/her supply. Equivalent actions such as magic portal, flying machine, or wagon movement are eligible, however simply moving an already deployed follower onto this tile via actions such as fleeing from the plague, or moving followers from the city of Carcassonne are not.
Collagetile:
A farmer located on the this tile has +1 value for majority if its owner loves boardgames. The player with the majority on the field at the end of the game recieves +3 bonus points (one for each heart).
Microbetile:
Placing a follower on this tile opens up new options for further placement. Tiles adjacent to microbetile (not diagonally) are now elegible for follower placement, but only to an unclaimed, unfinished feature. Tiles occupied in this way extend the area of effect resulting in a potentially growing colony of followers If a part of the colony becomes disconnected from the source microbetile, or you loose the follower on the microbetile, the ability is lost. Think of it like the Plague region.
-
Nice house rules. One clarification:
Microbetile:
Placing a follower on this tile opens up new options for further placement. Tiles adjacent to microbetile (not diagonally) are now legible for follower placement, but only to an unclaimed, unfinished feature.
Placement on previously placed tiles in the growing “microbezone” is limited to one meeple per subsequent turn, when the player on the microbetile does not take any other “moving wood” during Step2 of the turn?
-
Yes, basically if you assume normally you can only place a follower onto a tile you just placed, with active microbetile, you can also choose any tiles adjacent to the "microbezone".
-
I have posted the picture of my microbe tile over at BGG along with an invitation to join this project. Hopefully we attract more participants and potential future forum members. https://boardgamegeek.com/image/6990492/carcassonne

Ow that's great! Thanks; it can be a nice fan-edition of the base game!

@Willem : At DIN0's suggestion from my earlier posting, here are a couple of tile designs if they are still available (if not, I can apply a similar process to most other tiles)

Nice additions @wallaceprime ! I really like the tiles. Great to see the project continue.
-
@wallaceprime They look awesome!!! Congrats!
-
And another variation, "Bold Strokes" (I think it looks more impressive when enlarged)

It looks awesome!

I just wish I'd had more creative input than just trying different drop-down menus until something pretty appeared! ;D
However, trial and error can often lead to interesting results, particularly when using the HDR (High Dynamic Range) technique in photography.
I was pleased with this manipulated image I took in Bradgate Park in the UK:

Nothing wrong with that. I figured that it would be a way to fill out the complete set of tiles if there weren't enough "alternative" ideas. A couple of my submissions to Willem have used a similar approach, messing around with the Effects menus in Photoshop. The "Bold Strokes" one looks good.

Another option that could be interesting is to use some of the AI style-transfer software (e.g: https://deepdreamgenerator.com/). They produce very cool results (sometimes ;D).
