Title: Multiple Kathedrals and Besiegers in 1 city
Post by: SRBO on December 05, 2014, 03:34:41 PM
So i had this game with many tiles.. and the following city came up:

In this city were 2 kathedrals. and 1 besiegers..

we know this: 1 kathedrals counteracts the effect of 1 besieger..
but 2 kathedrals act as 1 kathedral..

my guess is that you still get the same amount of points as if there were no kathedrals and besiegers. whats your guess?

(sorry really bad grammar today)

If a city contains cathedrals the points per tile and pennant are increased by 1. If a city has besiegers then the points per tile and pennant are decreased by 1. Therefore a city with any amount of cathedrals AND any amount of besiegers scores 2 points per tile and pennant.

I think the question goes a little deeper than that as SRBO was pointing out that there were 2 cathedrals and 1 Besieger in the same city. So, in a nutshell, do cathedrals and Besiegers cancel each other out outright or can one outweigh the other if more of the same tiles are added so that the effect of the majority is still taken into account when scoring the city?

unfortnuately I have no idea, but it's a great question!

It’s a very good question. :)
I think Rosco’s interpretation of the rules is right. If not, you would get 0 point for a city with two Besiegers, and that seems odd.

Carcassonne has never had cumulative (stacking) affects that I know of, so any number of Cathedrals is canceled out by any number of Besiegers. I.e., I agree with Rosco, as well.

I don't think Cathedrals and Besiegers cancel each other out: Any number of Cathedrals increase the points for a city tile and pennant by 1 - Any number of Besiegers decrease the points for a city tile and pennant by 1.  Both have influence to the points, but they are no counterparts. And there is definitely no stacking effect, otherwise a city with two cathedrals would score 4 points per tile and pennant and a city with 2 besiegers would score nothing, a city with 3 besiegers would "score" -1 point per tile and pennant!

...a city with 3 besiegers would "score" -1 point per tile and pennant!

In this case you'd be happy with the mage or the witch in your city as either would reduce the damage!

Correct, no stacking effect on Cathedrals or Besiegers. That would be crazy powerful. Imagine though, that you are in a large city now with 4 besiegers on it. Thanks to the competition. The tables would turn - you would be trying to block it so it can't be finished and opponents would be trying to finish it for you. You might even be trying to glom onto someone's city to suck them in with you. Yet, finishing it would still score more than end-game scoring. That would be a weird twist.

In our family games we typically include some number of besiegers along with Inns & Cathedrals to provide more of a balance against the 3 point city.

The thought of pulling others into some sort of black hole city is awesome.

Probably we should make a "Misfortune seldom comes alone" expansion with stacking misfortune negative scoring under certain circumstances.
