The biggest culture shock I had when I moved from Ontario to Michigan was that all of sudden, a date was written in a more sensible way.
FWIW, the way I deal with the problem of the two date standards is to start with the year: 2018-02-08. I wish every system on the planet defaulted to this presentation. This clearly takes a logical path from general to specific, it auto-sorts the way one would expect (the typical American format does not).
The correct way to do it is to represent each day as an integer. Today is the 39th of 2018. Just how I like it.
