Ah, turns out I had already read those.  :)

As for what I'm playing, I'm brand-spanking new to the world of board games.  So with some itunes gift-card money I picked up Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Stone Age, and Le Havre.  I've played 3/4 (still need to learn Le Havre) and enjoy them all.  With some other unexpected gift money my family picked up Carc Big Box 3, and Ticket to Ride with India/Switz expansion and Africa Expansion.  When the next birthday comes I'll probably pick up something else with additional gift $! Grateful for this site and BGG to give me numerous ideas.

I've been playing a bunch of random games lately. Carcassonne has actually been a headliner lately because of all the new Minis. I've tried them all and written reviews for each.

I'd be curious to see those reviews.  Have a link?

This string of posts also makes me believe that Z-Man doesn't have any intentions of reprinting Hunters and Gatherers with Scout expansion and/or Ark of the Covenant.  Is that so?

I'm not nearly as vocal as some others here, but I do wish Z-Man would consider releasing some of the smaller expansions (river, river ii, king, etc.) as separate expansions rather than all bundled up.  My profession doesn't give me an annual salary anywhere near 6 figures, and spending $25 on a bundle rather than $6 on what I'd really like to have matters to my budget...a lot.

With that said, I understand that Rio Grande published things like King and Scout, River II, etc., and then released the German edition of Count, King, and Cult which people *had* to buy even though they already owned most of it through the smaller expansions.  Those buyers were upset with the bundle for a different reason than I am.

Therefore, I understand that Z-man certainly cannot make all people happy all the time.  It's impossible to do.  Still, I'm now at a point where I'm forced to decide whether I want to 1) Buy a new Z-man Carcassonne game for $20-$25 in order to get a copy of the river and have a bunch of extra tiles or 2) Buy a copy of the German release of Count, King, and Cult for $25 to get a copy of River II, and have 3 other expansions I'll rarely use.  Or maybe 3) Save my money and put it towards a new game in the future, such as Stone Age, or Flash Point: Fire Rescue.  Again, my budget doesn't permit me to do all-of-the-above, so a choice must be made.  And the choice would be so much easier if I could grab a river/ii for $6 or less.

I sympathize with your position, but I don't view either publisher as being deliberately inconsiderate. It has been several years since the small expansions were released and people had plenty of opportunity to pick them up. The "compilation" supersedes the individual small expansions. Some people will buy the new version, and those who don't want to can buy the individual ones used from other players. If you want to be angry, direct it towards the people who sell used expansions on eBay for more than what they paid for it.

Well, I can grab Count, King and Cult (German release) now for $25...or I can wait - and assuming Z-man will include River II - I can buy it later this year for a cheaper price. Hmmmm...decisions, decisions...

.

In summary, two questions:
1. What do you consider the essential "base" collection that any Carc sessions should have?
2. What expansion is first on your list when decided which to add?

Many thanks to all. I really enjoy this site and look forward to visiting regularly.

And oh yes, the CAR is FANTASTIC!  (My attempts to find this resource led me to the site.)

I'm quite new to the world of Carc, but since I've gotten the bug I've read just about every forum and game variant I can get my hands on.  While I certainly don't claim to be an expert player (not in the least!) I've learned that the base game, I & C, T & B pretty much sums up the base game for the majority...with a number of them also including the Phantom, River/II and/or the mini expansion that was available in a Games Quarterly magazine.  After that, P & D, Tower, A &M and the new mini expansions are used much less often.  (That said, I've also read that the Ferries is probably the best of the mini's and is worth using pretty often.)

In short, I & C and T & B is used most often in my household and is often the core of a "base game". If we add in P & D or A & M, then we'll probably exclude T & B but still keep I & C in there, as it easily adds to the original.

Not sure this helps much, but just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I think perhaps the concept of a "Big Box" is starting to lose appeal. It seemed a strange marketing tactic to me from the beginning. The more you already have what's in the Big Box, the less likely you will be to purchase it. They're really only good for people just getting into the game, and as the market becomes more saturated, the number of new players drops.

I grabbed Carcassonne on ipad back in Dcember, and shortly after purchased a physical copy of Big Box 3. The US retailer selling BB3 sold through 15 or so in less than a week. I think that more than anything, the expansions available in BB3 are better than the offerings in BB4, which attributes to the lower sales numbers.  (As a side note, just about everyone on BGG agreed, indicating that BB3 was by far the better package...which is why I tracked one down.)

I don't see it as being likely, but I'll certainly pass the comments along to my contact at Z-Man.

Wow, thanks!  8)

Z-man games belongs to filosofia games.
Filosofia games published all the expansions 1-8 in French.
Why shouldn't Z-man games publish the 6th expansion for the English speaking world?

I think you misunderstood.  They should publish the 6th expansion for the English speaking world...in fact, I hope they do!  However, they should also publish river or river ii separately, as was done with the rio grande edition.

I expect bundled with King, Count, and Cult.
Which would suck. Sure, do that, but also release expansions separetely, so in case you have missed one earlier you do not have to buy doubles. HiG showed how little they care about their fan-base with Graf, König und Konsorten (releasing old and new stuff bundled). Rio Grande did a better job in that case.

The situation is not excatly the same, but I would strongly advice against a bundle without an alternative.

I agree.  I'm very new to the world of board gaming and Carcassonne is definitely one that drew me in.  I purchased Big Box 3 at a reasonable price, but from reading through all the rules (and reviews), I just can't see myself wanting/desiring Count, King, & Cult bundled with River ii.  I'd love to own River ii, but the others are just of little interest to me at this time.  I & C, T & B, P & D and A & M are good extensions for my current gaming...i just need a river(!), and nobody has or sells them alone anymore.  And paying $25-30 just to get a river isn't going to happen.

Thanks...I haven't seen anything 'official' from z-man on that just yet. Of course I can grab Graf, König und Konsorten in the US right now or $25 (after shipping). Enjoying Big Box 3 with my family for now, and BGG rates Graf, König und Konsorten a little lower than some other expansions out there...so I'm not sure if I should grab it now or wait for a future release.

I haven't seen anything here regarding the possibility of a River II release. Does z-man have the rights to release it, or will it never be printed again?
