« on: February 10, 2014, 06:09:51 PM »
Just wanted to say Happy Birthday to the new Carcassonne Central Community!! It was a year ago yesterday we got it up and running again. I won't be able to forget it because it happened on my Birthday.

So glad we've got the community rolling strong! And it's fun to be a part of it!  :red-meeple:

Other Games / Tasnia - by Jason Glover
« on: January 31, 2014, 01:29:44 PM »
I just received my copy from the Kickstarter campaign in the mail. My wife and I got in a 2-player game last night and we really enjoyed it. Now we can't wait to play it with more people. Has anyone else received their copy?

A couple of questions cropped up that we did not find addressed in the rule book.
(and we found a typo :()

1. When you buy a tile from a stack, when do you flip the new top tile face up? Immediately? or during your Gathering phase? or after your turn? We could not tell. We played that you had to wait till your Gathering phase so that it would prevent one player burning down through a stack. In this way a player may only purchase one tile from any one stack per turn. Not sure if it was correct but that's what we ruled.

2. Can you freely change tiles in and out, and rearrange tiles, of an incomplete building? We ruled Yes because the rule book partially addressed this by allowing tiles to be added to or removed from incomplete buildings. It didn't address rearranging but we lumped it in together.

3. At the end of your turn you can claim a tile by placing your pawn on the particular stack. If at a later time you want to claim a different tile can you move your pawn freely? Even though you did not purchase the original tile you claimed? We ruled No - because you affected the other player's buying power on one tile. It didn't seem to be good play for you to just be able to hop from one valuable tile to the next without buying them just to be a nuisance to your opponent.

I think that's all we came up with so far.

Other Games / Helios - looks interesting
« on: January 31, 2014, 06:53:03 AM »
I happened to notice this game in one of kettlefish's posts regarding the Sheep and Hills expansion.

Helios looks like it would be right up our alley. Lots of colorful bits, very hands-on, robust game play and interesting. I will definitely have to look for this at GenCon this year.

Anyone have any experience with it?

Unofficial Rules / Birthday in the Land of Cockaigne - Questions
« on: January 14, 2014, 06:54:25 PM »
First off, congratulations to the folks over at CarcF for a very neat little fanspansion. This looks really fun to play. I like the idea that the tokens are hidden to the player until the end of the game - it's very thematic that you don't know what you're getting until you "open your gift" at the end of the game. It's quite festive! Group merit for CarcF!

I do have some questions as I read through the rules. Maybe they have to do with the translation but let's see.

1. Paragraph 3 states that a player may place a Cockaigne tile that completes a Cockaigne feature (9-tile grid) and collect 9 tokens. Here is the rule: "If a follower is placed as a Gourmet, the player gets 1 token, plus he gets 1 token for each already placed landscape tiles in the immediate vicinity around the Cockaigne landscape tile. In the best case he gets 9 tokens." Paragraph 4 seems to contradict this with this statement: "If the player places the Cockaigne landscape tile as the final tile and places the Gourmet, he only gets 1 point or 1 token (the gourmet bonus is eliminated in this case)." Which paragraph is correct?

I believe the intent of the sentence in paragraph 4 is as follows: "If the player placing the Cockaigne landscape tile as the final tile also has the Gourmet, he only gets 1 point or 1 token (the gourmet bonus is eliminated in this case)." That would make the rule consistent with paragraph 2 on page 1.

2. Just to be clear, when a player has the most of a type of token at game end they score 2 points per that type of token. Is that instead of the 1 point per tile that they are receiving in the prior sentence? Or in addition to it? Here is the rule: "Each players tokens at the front side are sorted by Cockaigne symbol for scoring - each player receives 1 point per token. If the player has the majority of a particular Cockaigne symbol, he receives 2 points for every token of this symbol. If several players have the majority for the same symbol, each player gets 2 points for each token of this symbol." Intuition points to "instead of" and not "in addition to"...but just to be clear...

3. Can an unoccupied Cockaigne tile be entered by a Magic Gate?

(Edit 1/15/14: I thought of more questions.)

4. If I place a tile in the vicinity of multiple Cockaigne tiles do I collect multiple tokens?

5. If I place a tile in the vicinity of multiple Cockaigne tiles on which I have a Gourmet may I collect multiple tokens or earn multple points?

6. If I place a tile in the vicinity of multiple Cockaigne tiles on one of which I have a Gourmet and on another of which my opponent has a Gourmet may I earn a point or a token and my opponent also earn a point?

Other Games / Snowdonia - Kickstarter
« on: May 13, 2013, 04:57:16 PM »
I just pledged at the $60 level, which includes the new expansion. I couldn't resist. This is the kind of game my play group will eat up. It has worker placement, resources, weather, automatic progression mechanics and a very interesting theme. Plus I am a fan of Wales for no particular reason. I am looking forward to owning this game.

Official Rules / Tunnel question
« on: May 13, 2013, 09:48:48 AM »
Is it allowed to place a tunnel chip on a tunnel opening of a road occupied by another player?

The English translations I've seen say that the tunnel entrance must be "unoccupied". Do you suppose the author was referring to the road connected to the tunnel being unoccupied? Since "occupying" normally refers to the presence of a follower, and tunnel openings cannot be occupied by a follower - Does an "unoccupied tunnel opening" mean one that is connected to an uoccupied road? Or one with no chip on it? Do we consider that a tunnel opening with a chip on it is "occupied"?

Is the word "unoccupied" the correct or best translation from the German? Perhaps "empty", or "unused" or "unclaimed" might be a better fit? I see obervet03 used "unclaimed" in the CAR.

If you use the word "unclaimed" it seem to allow a player to direcly join to another player's road by the placement of the chips. Using the word "unoccupied" could extend to the condition of the road attached and not allow such direct joining.

I wonder if we can get an official confirmation on what the author's intent was. Or is it already out there somewhere?

The Detours and Deadends is the same as Farm Gates. I struggle with what to call it but I made up tiles with a road construction type barrier with a detour sign and an arrow on the barricade. The mechanic is the same regardless the name.

Because one or two of the detours end up being dead ends we found that the farm grew very large. The board was practically one large farm. We played with Farmer in the Dell rules however which kept the farm from being unbalancing at game end. We used the same mechanic for Detours as that of Ferries. That is, you place the tile, move wood, then place the ferry/detour section. The result is different than that of Ferries though. In Ferries you can place a follower on one of the roads then instantly join to another player's road by placing the ferry section. In Detours though you cannot place a follower on the farm because it is occupied the minute you place the tile (presuming your placing it on an already occupied farm). So you don't instantly join to a farm with one of your followers, it's more of a two step process.

We actually got quite a few By Order of the King cards completed. That was fun.

Animal Farm was also very fun. There was a lot of play with the many tokens out. Even the Feoffer got drawn.

Here's what was included:
Inns & Cathedrals
Cathars & Siege
Magic Gates
Abbeys
Bridges
By Order of the King
Animal Farm
Detours & Deadends
Farmer in the Dell
Pig Herd tiles (2)
Wagon
Pig
Mayor
Alternate Start Tiles

In the end Orange took the win by 5 points - what a close game!

Reviews & Session Reports / 5 Player with WoF and Traders & Builders
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:55:41 PM »
Here are some pics from a recent 5 player game.

Here's what was included:
Inns & Cathedrals
Wheel of Fortune
Traders & Builders
The Flyer
Little Buildings (our first game with this expansion)
Cathars & Siege tiles
Abbeys
Father Time
Stairs/Upper Carcassonne
Bluffs/Farmer in the Dell
Magic Gates
Builder
Mayor
Phantom
Bridges

Little Buildings played well but it does clutter the board a little and you have to be careful when scoring features to make sure you've got the relevant ones included.

The game lasted about 2 and a half hours which is about typical for us. It was closely fought and in the end Green won by 21 points. He scored a nice Inn on the Lake road late in the game which gave him the late lead. It was a chase after that and we couldn't quite reach him. We had a great time.

  The early score:

  Mid-game score:

Final landscape and score:

The Marketplace / Clear teacher meeples
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:11:30 PM »
Anyone know where to find the clear teacher meeples that are in The School?

I am trying to complete my custom color meeple sets Brown, Pink, Orange, Gray and White. I would like to find those clear meeples and paint the outside perimeter in these corresponding colors. (I know Gray is not a custom color but I'm using the "gray" phantom meeple for my Purple set.)

Even though they are a little larger than phantom meeples I would make them do. I've not seen the phantom size meeple in clear so I don't dare ask for it.

General / History of the Cité of Carcassonne
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:47:10 AM »
I stumbled upon this perfectly concise write-up of the history of Carcassonne. Not just the evolution of the city but also of the name itself. I found the write-up to be incredibly interesting and thought I would share it.

If anyone can add to this thread please do.

The Marketplace / Wanted - H&G tiles from King & Scout expansion
« on: March 26, 2013, 11:32:30 AM »
Is anyone interested in selling the Hunters & Gatherers tiles from their King & Scout expansion?

Before I owned Hunters & Gatherers I used the H&G tiles from my King & Scout expansion to make other fanspansions. Now I would like to replace them.

Any takers?

Has anyone else had intermittent troubles with Mediafire? I have seen it lately with broken images/links. I wasn't sure if it was my computer or if there are others also seeing problems.

Reviews & Session Reports / 7 player session
« on: February 12, 2013, 06:37:52 PM »
Wow! This was a close one. The first pic shows the final score. First, second and third - Black, Orange and Purple finished 1 point apart in succession. Final score was 137 to 136 to 135. By far the closest game we've had. This game ran around 2 and a half hours which was pretty good for a 7 player session. What a lot of fun.

The interesting part of the story is that we found out after the game that Orange had played the entire game 1 follower short. I had borrowed one for measuring purposes earlier and didn't remember to put it back with the game. He never realized he was short and finished 2nd anyway - that was quite impressive.  :o

As it is Black won the game with 4 followers trapped in time!

Here's what was included:
Inns & Cathedrals
Cathars/Siege
Ferries
Flier
Gold Mines
Upper Carcassonne (Stairs)
Stone Walls
Bluffs
Magic Gates
Abbeys
Farmer in the Dell
Father Time
Pig
Wagon
Mayor
Big follower

General / Draw-string bags for meeples
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:35:47 PM »
I found an awesome little source for some shear draw-string bags. Get this - they are only 24 cents each. I bought 11 of them and paid $2.00 shipping. It's just about the best 5 bucks I've ever spent.

They are made of organza. The 4x6 size is perfect to hold a full set of meeples, an abbey tile, two bridges, two castles, two tunnels, a trading post and a scoring die...with plenty of room to spare for future.
