News and Events / Re: New Carcassonne App for Android

Hi Exozet, thanks for your response. It's reassuring to see that you're taking an interest in what's being said about your game.

The device I use is a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone so the screen is quite small anyway. Being unable to place a meeple where I'd like happens maybe once or twice a game but I can get round it by zooming in (and then back out again so that I can see the rest of the playing area).

I'm looking forward to seeing how the features you're currently working on turn out, especially the online mode. And if it's not something you're already aware of, please could you also add to your list the bug whereby farmers who are placed on enclosed farms (e.g. farms that are surrounded by closed road(s) for example) aren't scored at the end of the game?

Thanks again for your feedback; hopefully you know where to come if you're looking for people to test things before your next release! :)

I fully understand your point Jere, and agree with it to some degree.

But whilst I don't think charging for the expansions is unfair as such, the fact that it costs extra money to play with these expansions is still a negative point just as it would have been an additional positive if they were free.

I have just a couple to add that I tend to use from time to time:

We tend to use the word "cheeky" quite a lot e.g. "I'll just take a cheeky two points for this road" or "I'll go for the cheeky city for four points". Although there are no strict rules as to what qualifies as being cheeky, it's usually for quite low-scoring features where you deploy a meeple and get it back in the same turn.

I've just started using the word "glom" e.g. "glomming into someone else's farm". This is something I've picked up from the forums (can't remember who to credit for this - sorry!) and is a good word for describing the process of getting one of your own meeples into a feature already occupied by another player.

News and Events / New Carcassonne App for Android
« on: May 21, 2014, 03:46:04 AM »
As some of you may already have seen, a new version of the Carcassonne app for Android was released recently by Exozet games. It's a fairly major update (50mb or so) but in my opinion they've taken away more than they've added and there's still no support for playing online.

Here is a quick summary of the changes:

Plus points:
- Improved graphics. It does now look pretty good.
- Improved music (which I never have on).
- Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, Corn Circles & The Festival are all available.

Neutral points:
- "Improved UI" is still equally playable but offers little over the old UI in terms of gameplay. I can't decide which I prefer but the fact that I never used to struggle to deploy meeples onto the correct part of the tile (but now do) suggests that this is actually a negative point.
- No change to AI opponents as far as I could tell. They may have been tweaked slightly but this hasn't ramped up the difficulty at all.

Negative points:
- You have to pay extra to play with any of the new expansions listed above (River 2 is still free). I might expect this from a free game but not from one which I've already had to pay for.
- No achievements to aim for. This really bugs me, but not nearly so much as it would have done if I'd still been working towards any of the achievements in the old version before this one replaced it.
- No way to randomise which player starts or to change the background/ "table" colour behind the tiles on the main game screen (that I've found so far).
- Always seems to default to a certain opponent rather than leaving it on "random" so I have to reset this every time I want to play a game.
- Takes way longer to open and start games than the old version used to.
- There is still no way of playing against an online opponent. Since this is one of the main things that most people have been asking for since the previous version was released it seems crazy that they haven't been able to implement this yet.

Overall I'm really disappointed with this update. I was expecting the new expansions based on an email I had from someone at Exozet back in January but the same email also told of ongoing work on an online multiplayer mode which apparently doesn't exist. Maybe it will come in a later update, who knows? But for the time being it just feels like they've taken a really good app, beautified it for the sake of it and then just chucked it out there without really testing it or thinking about what it really had to offer over the old version.

It is early days indeed, but I for one am nervous about playing MrNumbers...

(this said, I'm nervous about playing everyone even though I keep reminding myself that it's all just for fun!)

General / Re: A Bridge Too Far?
« on: May 20, 2014, 02:08:17 PM »
I like bridges although we never play with more than 3 per player even in 2-player games. There's something very rewarding about spotting a great opportunity to place a bridge and they can get you out of some situations that would otherwise be impossible to escape from. I like how they look on the final map too; very cool!

However, I really don't like how easy farming becomes when you include bridges. One of the things I enjoy about Carcassonne is spotting the really good places to steal onto someone else's farm and then making it happen. When bridges are involved it's possible to do this without any of the "cleverness" or strategy and this can spoil the game a little for me.

I don't really play with bridges very often anymore partly because of the above, and partly because they can really slow the game down when you're playing with people who are taking it seriously...

JCloisterZone FAQ, Suggestions & Bug Reports / Re: JCloiserZone FAQ

@rfielder - I only have limited experience of Windows 8, and this was enough to make me want to stick to Windows 7 for the time being. I'm surprised that Skype can only run in a maximised Window though, what a pain!

I guess if email worked before then I'm sure it can work again and life will hopefully be a little simpler in future since you'll be able to host directly and there won't be a third person involved. Generally I'm happy to sign up for whatever everyone else if using to make chatting as fun and easy as possible...

Congratulations guys, I hope you both enjoyed it!

@rfielder - I must admit, I laughed out loud when I read your somewhat shorter account of your match on the league thread. I believe it was: "We played. He won."

Well done for making it work over such a big time difference too.

@Nebus - you can only get the character meeples in MegaMeeple size as they're simply too detailed to be scaled down for normal meeples. Also, I'd hold on for a couple of months before you choose your meeples as MeepleSource have just finished a very successful KickStarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1303699463/character-meeples) and will have somewhere in the region of 150 new characters available from around August...

@mas9dj - according to the change log (http://jcloisterzone.com/change_log.txt) it looks as though older rules for scoring farms have been removed with the current version.

General / Re: Carcassonne for more than 6 players?
« on: May 16, 2014, 05:58:35 AM »
I don't think I'd want to play with more than six people. A 6-player game was the largest I've ever taken part in but I found it quite boring having to wait for five people to take their turn each round before I could lay my next tile. I will rarely play with more than four people as it just feel pointless otherwise since the amount of control you have over the game diminishes too much after this and the influence of luck becomes too great...

Well done guys, I think it's so cool that games like this can happen!

If you play online with expansions, be careful if you use Traders & Builders with Princess & Dragon. If you use a dragon tile to generate a bonus turn, the game tends to stop after the dragon finishes movement rather than giving the second turn.

I think this bug has been reported to the author so hopefully it will be fixed in the next version...

If I get to play in it I will definitely be there, but somehow I think this may be rather unlikely...

Two weeks on Sunday until the UK championships!
