Welcome to the group stage of the 2017 World Cup of Carcassonne Central! This thread is primarily for members of Group A to arrange matches between themselves and post scores, screenshots and the obligatory smack-talk as the group progresses. The top 2 players from this group once everyone in the group has played all 5 of their matches will advance through to the knockout stage.
Here is a list of the group members (including location):

ChooseLife and I kicked off the group A tournament tonight with a stormer of a match. Had my opponent made it out of IKEA a little earlier, the result could have been a lot different but, owing to his well-known penchant for DIY furniture, I managed to get in a training game before we started, which put me in a good frame of mind for what was to come.
Unfortunately, I am unable to write the in-depth analysis of the game blow by blow as would Jungleboy and Danisthirty, as I still spend my time trying to remember which expansions we are playing, let alone, how clever or indifferent our moves were but, unfortunately, I won, so I guess that it is my duty to report on the game to the masses.
The game itself was one of many interesting battles. The game-changer, as far as I was concerned, was the Cathedral city which was a hard fought battle, upon which I eventually gave up and decided to block in 2 meeples and the big meeple of my opponent. I was subsequently fortunate enough to get enough festival tiles to pull my forces out of the blocked city and use them to overpower on the biggest farm, and to pick up lots of small cities and short roads.
The score was Chooselife :blue-meeple: 138 v TheSteveAllen :yellow-meeple: 169
Thanks again to my friend Chooselife for the excellent and very close match, and to MrNumbers for coming up with this very interesting combination of expansions.
I wish you the best of luck Pedro with the rest of your tournament.

I'm available on Thursday, Saturdax and Sunday evening, presumably from 9pm CET.
-
Tomorrow (Thursday) 8pm anyone?
This weekend I am not available. Next one looks better.
-
Adror, I can try to make it, but we are very busy at work at the moment. I might be more comfortable with 9 o'clock but, failing that, I will play you any evening next week, which gives us more time to practice. :D
-
I'm available on Friday, Saturdax and Sunday evening, presumably from 9pm CET.
I should be around on Saturday evening, but I might have visitors this close to Christmas. If you drop in on Slack and leave a message, I usually get back to you quite quickly.

:violet-meeple: Leven 122 - 161 Adror :yellow-meeple:
first game for me in this world cup took place. nice expansions, cool game. thanks Leven for playing spontaneously today.
controlling the majority on the main farm by connecting some small farmers always one step ahead before Leven could do, was the key for success. and of course luckily drawing some good tiles here and there.

anyone available Thursday or Friday evening lets say 8pm?

OK, will try to catch you then.
By that time I had my first game on this Cup, vs. Chooselife.
254:147.
At the beginning we were very even, but then, along with the fight for the main farm, I started to get away with points. Two cathedral cities and big city in the middle helped me much with it. After I connected my big meeple to the main farm, I relaxed a little bit, but Chooselife fought till the end, fortunately I luckily drew some tiles to prevent his tries to equalize the main farm.
Good game, Chooselife, and good luck with the rest of your games!

Tonight's game in group A:
:red-meeple: BabyGamer vs :violet-meeple: Leven 77:203

Wow. That's quite a PD!

Wow. That's quite a PD!
I was highly benefited by the fact that BabyGamer didn't really know some of these expansions. But now that she has some experience in them she will have better chances in her remaining games. At least I hope so. :)

Playing against you is a learning experience for most people! And you're right, it has been a while since she last took part in one of our tournaments...

anyone available sunday evening?

I will try to pop-up somewhere at 21:00 CET.

okay cool I will join irc chan around 9pm

MrNumbers vs. Adrornalin
181:128
And again, this game was all about the huge farm. I admit, that I was extremely lucky with connecting new farmers to it. If I remember correctly, all my placed additional farmers were connected just in the second turn after placing! At the beginning Adrornalin took away a big city from my phantom with his big meeple, then trapped my big meeple in the nearby city and got first 6 (!) Festival tiles, so I couldn't get back any of my trapped meeples! I decided to concentrate on the main farm and started above described procedure. Adror collected himself only when 12 tiles left in the bag, and it was too late to recover.
Good and very eve game, if we don't count the farm :) Good luck with outstanding games, Adrornalin! 8)
-
Statistics time!
6 games played, 9 left.
-
clearly deserved win anyway, I think I played too fast and recognized too late that tiles are running out. at that point I was two farmers behind and so the game was lost. MrNumbers discovered and occupied all farmer spots very well so even if I recognized sooner I guess chances were low to win
-
MrNumbers vs. TheSteveAllen
220:196
Very exciting and thrilling game. Almost the whole game I waited for rrrf tile to equalize the main farm, after that I thought the game was mine, but another danger came in: second farm grew almost as big as the main one, and there was a chance I could lose it. Fortunately, I drew the last fffr cloister tile.
Great and very enjoyable game! Thanks, Steve! Good luck the the rest of your games!
-
I can play Thursday and Friday any day time and any night time. Just leave a message, dear members of group A.
-
The final score of the game is not at all reflective of how close it was. I won the ...-point farm with the last tile of the game.
I can tell the same about my game vs Chooselife, except that it wasn't the last tile of the game but my last tile. The final PD is not really deserved, but we could already get used to huge farms in this World Cup group stage, and by winning that farm one can claim big victory.
:yellow-meeple: Chooselife vs :violet-meeple: Leven 122:206

hello steve, chooselife, babygamer,
please pm when you are available the next days.
lets carc!
greets
-
Sorry Adror, but I was hoping to catch up with you on Thursday or Friday, but Christmas got in the way. We have visitors here for Christmas, and we are off on holiday to Barcelona for the new year ( while we are still allowed in Europe). I should, however, be available some time between the two, so I will PM you some suggestions when I know when I will be free.
By the way, I am blaming you for my bad form in this competition as we have broken with our tradition this time around!! I always play my first game against you in every competition...except this one!! It has brought me my bad luck, I believe. >:D
-
sure, xmas seems an obvious reason for not playing carc primarily : )
ouch - I am sorry to have brought you bad luck. but after we have played our game, I believe your bad form suddenly will disappear and luck will return for the rest of the competition. (y)
-
8 games played, 7 left.
-
@Adrornalin and @babygamer I will be able to play till Friday during working hours GMT, lunch included, just in case you are available.
Evenings will depend on the kids.
Not sure of my New Years plans yet so weekend is still a ?.
-
sounds good. how about Friday mid day? 11am? you can choose a suitable time for you
-
Perfect. Just find me on slack when you are ready.
-
Okay cool. But IRC channel works better for me. Lets meet there pls.

:blue-meeple: Chooselife 190 - 224 Adrornalin :yellow-meeple:
That was close and very intense during the whole game with some ups and downs on both sides. Chooselife made more points in every category (although I could manage to close the cathedral city!) - except the farms. The winner tile I guess was the cfrr from I&C. It connected my double meeple on the big farm (which was closed then!) plus gave me points for a road with inn plus the opportunity to start another city with the phantom.
Thanks for that game Chooselife and good luck for all coming games in the WC!
-
MrNumbers vs. BabyGamer
165:138
Interesting game, with much luck from BabyGamer's side connecting the farmers (like my luck in game vs. Adrornalin). Despite of loss of main farm I balanced it with satellite farms.
-
10 games played, 5 left.
-
Bump!
Anything happening here?
-
Yep. BabyGamer and Adrornalin played their game. The result was 140 to 221.
I made a really mean move with the rrrr festival tile, I have to admit ;) Trapping three of her meeples at once plus rescueing my own meeple. With the last tiles I completed the cathedral city and took the lead on one of the farms, that's why the point difference raised in the end.
Good luck in coming games, BabyGamer. You'll win your next game, promise? :)
-
Alohaa! :)
Is it here that I'm supposed to post the screeny of the game?
Tum di dum... Is it attached now? :) I did press the img button and then the attachment button..
Was an intense game. :) At one point I was leading!!!! But then... My stategy went poop when I never got the right straight path piece.. damn. :)
But good game. Congrats to Chooselife. :)
P.S. Also, I just noticed that u get 6 points for a farm with belagerer on... DAAAAMN i need to start to read the ruleeez... :D I thought they were bad... like, get 1 point for city.. But they seem to be good for farm ppl... damn.
-
TheSteveAllen 176 - 191 Adrornalin
That was really a strange game. We thought the tile distributor made fun of us and gave us both a lot of stupid tiles. As half of the game was played, we nearly settled up nothing with this weird combination of unuseful tiles. Anyway, Steve managed to score better than me and was always in front. Then I was lucky to close the cathedral city because he removed a meeple, thinking chances are low to close the city. The farms were not developing either, so we continued strolling around with our meeples waiting for something important to happen. 5 out of 6 besieger tiles appeared within the last 20 tiles, so the farming action finally started, but we ended quite even in farming points. Close game in the end. Cathedral city with 42pts was the game changer.
Thanks for playing Steve 8)

Congrats, Adrornalin. That result means that I need a win over MrNumbers to reach the quarter finals. Not an easy task...

Sorry Leven, but even your 'bribe' of the extra bastion tiles was not enough for me to beat Adror against the strange tile distribution that we had in our game tonight. I have never known a game before that started with 20 tiles to go.
If any of you guys would like a practice match before the quarter finals against someone who always 'just loses by a few points', let me know.
-
OOooooH!
HERE it is. :)
I was wondering where our groop info thingy was.
Someone put my message here, good, since I was like, "Oh Noes, it's not in the main thread anymore!! :o "
Okipoki, sorry. :) Didn't find this thread until now. :pink-meeple:

Well.. Pfff.... The Nintendo Switch is out!!! ;D And before that the Wii U has kept me busy.. ^-^ and work... and study... and, and... excuses. :P
;)
So many expansions... Got most of ´em, but haven't bothered to read the rulez that much.. hehe... Hey, I just enjoy the game! ^-^
-
Heya! :)
I'm going away tomorrow, to Kemiö, for a 3 day study course, and will be back Sunday evening... Next time I can play is Monday, after work, around 20-21 Finnish time. :)
Around same time for the rest of the week evenings, will also be fine for me. :)
Next weekend I should be home.
Cheers! :pink-meeple:

Yes, and we've already finished it. You will not like the result:
:violet-meeple: Leven vs :red-meeple: MrNumbers 159:146
This result means that I and MrNumbers finish the group on 1st and 2nd place.
Commiserations to Adrornalin who finds himself on the unfortunate 3rd place with equal points (having only one defeat).
The game started quite unusual (at least for us), we both deployed lots of followers (mostly to cloisters) until we were almost out of them. We began a battle for a city which soon included a cathedral, as well. MrNumbers took majority in the city which soon got dangerously close to get completed. So I tried to join another knight there but had to hope that MrNumbers wouldn't get a splitter tile (either a CCCC or a CCCF). I decided to create a CCCF hole to reduce his options. I survived this threat, later I drew the CCCF splitter but at that moment the city was already incompletable because it needed a CCRR tile, too, and those were already all out. In the meantime, MrNumbers started farming, and he deployed (quite early) 3(!) normal followers to a promising farm which could normally be considered as a risky strategy but only if one's goal is to win the game. But this time it was a good way to exclude the opportunity of a big defeat (MrNumbers had to avoid a loss with more than 95 point to reach the quarter finals) as we've seen before that with these expansions the ownership of the most valuable farm(s) is the key to victory most of the time. But I still had a lot of tiles to build another good farm (I also had some luck with besieged cities which made my farm even more valuable), in the end it was even worth more than the farm of MrNumbers, and that (plus some other farms) helped me to reach a narrow win in the end.
Thanks for this exciting game, MrNumbers, and good luck in the quarter finals.
-
With last game to be played we have following situation in the group.
It's quite unusual then with only one loss player still didn't get to the QF. Commiserations, Adrornalin!
Thanks for the good write up, Leven. One thing I didn't understand: what is the CCCF splitter tile are you talking about? Both such tiles went away early in the game.
-

Wow, you're right, I wasn't aware of that. So actually there was no threat at all after I had created that CCCF hole. Well, at least it made the game even more thrilling for me. ;)
-
Ouhh bad news for me! No lucky losers round? ;) Congrats for reaching the QF and good luck for your way to the final ^-^
-
The final game of the Group A first round was played tonight, and I managed to finish on a winning note, the same as I began. Shame about the games in the middle.
The result was:- BabyGamer :red-meeple: 130 v TheSteveAllen :yellow-meeple: 200
A most enjoyable match was had, despite that fact that Babygamer ran out of meeples towards the end and obviously had a tedious time of it restricting my score by tile placement.
Thanks for the game Leena, and I hope that you will think about joining the 'Ladder' that I told you about. I will send you the link later.

Final standings of Group A.

If, like myself, you enjoyed the competition of the Carcassonne World Cup, but failed to qualify for the knock-out stage, you might be interested in joining our little tournament that we are setting up amongst the others who did not qualify.
Details can be found here ;- http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3835.0 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3835.0)
I hope that you will all consider joining this friendly tournament, especially as you can't get "knocked out" of this one before the end.
