favourite modular combinations

What are your favourite modular combinations?

(What is a modular combination I hear you ask.)

I consider most of the expansions to be modular in nature. There is rarely anything in the rules that makes it necessary to include/exclude an expansion in its entirety.

As an example consider major expansion 10 - Under The Big Top - to my mind the modules are:
  • circus tiles
  • acrobat tiles
  • circus & animal tokens
  • ringmaster
I've played games with only the acrobat tiles module and it makes for an interesting addition - the points are more tempting without the bigger scoring/lower risk circus about - but of course there's still the risk of meeples getting stuck in the pyramid.
It's certainly possible to include the circus tiles without the actual circus and the animal tokens but probably not the other way around. ;)
I can see that it barely makes sense to include only the ringmaster since without any of the tiles from the expansion he effectively becomes a normal meeple. Even so, it's an option.

So, I'm not sure what my personal favourite is but I've experimented a bit and given it some thought and I plan on trying this soon:
  • base tiles
  • River tiles
  • Inns & Cathedrals (full expansion)
  • Builder & Pig (from Traders & Builders)
  • Barn & tiles (from Abbey & Mayor)
  • Festival
  • Labyrinth x 3

My list of favorites include the following in order:

-Portal tiles (P&Drag)
-Builders (T&B)
-Big Meeple (I&C)
-Inn tiles (I&C)
-Abbeys (A&M)

Years ago, I made a deck of randomizer cards to select modular components at random for games of Carc. Never really used it much (my wife only will play if we use T&B and nothing else), but it was fun to work on.

Never thiught of it like that. I will try a game with modules soon. Off the top of my head I think my favorite combination would be:
Base Game
River + River 2
Inns & Cathedrals(Full)
Traders & Builders(Full)
Dragon & Tiles Needed
Abbey & Barn
Bridges & Castles
King & Robber
Fruit-Bearing Trees

Well our standard setup is changing over time, but currently we are plaing
1. Basic Game
2. Magic portal
3. Big Meeple
4. Phantom
6. Inns
7. Cathedrals
8. Fruit Bearing Trees

Then it depends on who is playing, what is weather outside (Dragon or not Dragon, that's the question).

Anyway my favorite is Barber Surgeons but nobody want to play it with me ;-) (Because they are lamas)

These days I'm playing the following:
1. Base Game (1 or 2)
2. Big Meeple
3. Phantom
4. Abbot
5. Bridges from Exp. 8
6. Abbeys from Exp. 5
7. German Castles
8. Labyrinths
9. River or River II

I am very fond of the following but it depends on the players participating:
A. Inns  + Cathedrals
B. The Dragon + Fairy + Volcanos + Magic Portals
C. The Tower
D. The Count of Carcassonne

B, C and D require an audience that likes challenging each other.

I frame an entire campaign series after this concept. It includes 50 unique "element" match-ups of every expansion released through 2015. I had planned to update it for Carc 2.0 in February, but I quickly discovered I had far too much work to do and too little time to update the campaign, so the old one is the only one I've got at the moment. In any case, feel free to check it out: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1219.msg24183#msg24183.

Hi Whaleyland,

The link to the PDF gives me an error 404. Can you have a look at it?

Did you play the campaigns all the way through? I assume that you can run one or two scenarios per day, right? It always depends on the time slot available and your opponents' stamina...  ;)

Cheers!

When I started back in 2014 I played though the Whaleyland campaigns with 2 work colleagues. We then made our own campaigns using whole expansions to negate the sorting at the end of the games due to strict time constraints.

I like to use wheel of fortune instead of base game, adding
Flyers
Festival
GQ mini expansion
Abbey and Mayor

My work colleagues like to add
The Plague or Princess and Dragon as they feel these level the playing field.....they also gang up on me too!

Apparently I updated The History of Carcassonne Campaign in March 2016 to add the Labyrinth and German Cathedrals and never updated the link. Oops! Here you go. This is the most current version: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m0xoms849309rap/carchistcampaign1.5.pdf?dl=0.

I only ever played the first two campaigns all the way through—never the grand campaign of all 50 scenarios. I had the stamina to keep going, but my partner had gotten Carcasonne-d out so we switched to playing other games. Perhaps 50 scenarios was a bit much...

Awesome file and very interesting concept. Thank you so much!!!

What happens if you are missing any of the expansions mentioned in the document?
* Do you skip that scenario and grant the extra elements to all the players?
* What about the prize for the winner? Do you provide it to the winner of the previous scenario?

+1 merit from me. :(y) :(y)
