This has nothing to do with Carcassonne, but it’s cool and medieval and so I thought I’d share it with you.

Over the Christmas break I was in southern Italy, and in an extraordinary town in the region of Basilicata called Matera, I came across some wooden bread stamps. These stamps were used in the past by the commoners of the town to stamp their family initials on their bread dough before baking it in a communal oven, so once the bread was cooked, everyone would know who each loaf of bread belonged to.

One of the stamps was in the form of a medieval tower … so I basically had to buy it. And here it is!

This will come out as NL (my initials) when stamped on bread dough.

Very cool. As a keen baker and Carcassonne player that'd be right up my alley. I look forward to seeing some photos of either imposing games of Carcassonne (with your tower looming in the background), some personalised baking, out both at the same time!

Matera is truly an extraordinary town. I would urge anyone to visit.

I would love to see a bread stamp with the stylized 'C' for Carcassonne!!!

I semi-seriously considered asking for this, but we were in a hurry and I didn't have an example handy to show them.

Did you have this custom made jb? Or coincidentally did it already have your initials?

They have the tower (or whatever the design is, as they were many other choices) already made and then they just custom-make the initials part on the bottom.

I've asked for a bread-making recipe book for my birthday next month so hopefully I can start stamping soon
