The plague

From the S-CAR 7.4 page 177

“It is also possible to divide a swarm of fleas by choosing to move one of them.”

Does moving a (presumably active) flea take the place of choosing a flea from the supply or selecting a latent flea to move?

Disclaimer  --  If your heart is set on a set of 6 phantoms and in the nice meeple shaped coloured storage box then read no further, this post is not for you.

In 2011 HiG released the Carcassonne Anniversary edition with everything in a large meeple shaped box and the standard 40 wooden Meeples (8 in each of the 5 basic colours) were replaced by clear acrylic ones.  Shortly afterwards these same clear acrylic Meeples were sold separately as the Phantom.

Hoard 'O Bits (http://hoardobits.com/) makes its business by apparently buying full sets of stuff then breaking them up and selling the individual components.  They are still trying to sell the translucent Meeples from the Anniversary edition.

CARCASSONNE BITS ANNIVERSAY EDITION - 8x TRANSLUCENT BLUE FOLLOWERS

Now the catch is they are selling the individual colours in sets of 8 so you have to buy a set in each of the 5 colours.  Last time I checked they had between 8 & 12 copies of each set.

The price is very reasonable as each set is $1.86.  So 8 sets of 5 phantoms (black, blue, red, green, yellow)  will cost you $9.30 with shipping and handling at a flat rate (including International, they claim) of $8.25 for a total $17.55 US dollars.  Therefore it will cost you $2.19 U.S  2.05 Euro per set of phantoms.  You might want to pick up some other items at the same time to take advantage of the flat shipping rate but the Carcassonne pickings on this site are pretty slim.

If you are able to split the costs with 1 or 2 friends then it becomes very affordable.

Also the Phantom expansion is compatible with both the Winter Carcassonne edition and Carcassonne II, so you can have separate sets of phantoms for these versions.  I keep my winter edition in its original box separate from all of my regular Carcassonne stuff.  The extras I will keep and maybe able to swap for something I don't have, next time there is a board gaming event in town

well if you also want I&C and T&B you might consider Big Box 5 if it is not too expensive

You get a river with the Count expansion (if you can find it)

Considering the target audience, I’d say that items seen for sale in local stores are only worth posting about if you’re prepared to act as a “middle-man” on behalf of someone from the forums who may be interested in purchasing, and then sorting out payment and postage between you.

I had considered that possibility but Andrew the Ambo seems to have that well in hand from NZ and suggesting it now might have messed up his process.

Even if people don't live anywhere the shop they might have relatives or friends who do and would be prepared to help them out.

Sounds like a good plan. Just there need to be detailed info when posting to this thread.

I like this thread but I don't want it to get spammed with half-baked info so other members have to check them out one by one only to get disappointed.

I do take exception to the term half-baked info,  no one else in this thread has been faulted for not posting international shipping rates.

I did take the trouble to find out that they did have it in stock  and how many copies they had.

I am not responsible for where people live nor do I know how much extra they are willing to pay or not pay.

I expected that this would appeal mainly to people living within driving distance of the store , a $10 dollar 10 year old magazine does get rather expensive when shipping has to be paid for.

There are probably other stores out there with some copies, perhaps members could check out what is available locally and post the info.

Loki, you have made a great and rare find!

To be honest I was more excited to find a (different) local store still had a copy of Abbey and Mayor so I was able to turn my Big Box 5 into a more complete set  - just need another copy of phantoms to round it out

we all have our own individual issues with collecting Carcassonne   :-[ :-[

they have about 10 copies in stock still in the original plastic wrap.

They have a limit of 1 per customer but they said they are prepared to ship internationally.

They are currently stocktaking (that is how they found these ones) so will not be shipping until early July

Anything Else / Change of season
« on: June 19, 2015, 02:21:43 PM »

When it comes to noting the change of the seasons it is normally summer/autumn when the leaves start to change colour or autumn /winter with the first snow or frost or especially winter/ spring when the snow melts and buds start to blossom that we remember.  This year for me it is different.

We had a Black-capped chickadee nesting in a hollow in an old apple tree next to our deck and we have spent the past 5 or 6 weeks watching them come and go to the nest.  The past three weeks especially were an example of constant hard work as the birds would supply an endless supply of grubs, firstly to the female who was brooding the eggs, then both of them feeding the chicks.

Now just a day or so before the start of summer they are suddenly gone and the stillness in the tree where they used to come and go is immense.

A happy yet poignant event of the kind that the poet Philip Larkin could capture so well.

Official Rules / suggested revision to S-CAR footnote

Carcassonne Standard CAR ver. 7.4 Page 11

3  As far as the Big Box is concerned, the sixth set of (gray) followers is a part of the basic game,
not Inns and Cathedrals. Additionally, Big Box 5 adds purple and pink followers for up to 8 players.

It should perhaps acknowldege that Big Box 5 purple and pink followers are not a full sets.

Or they could have included the A&M wood for all colors, plus the rules, and keep it a secret on the cover, that they included more or less "half an extra expansion", but why should they do that?

Probably because, if they had advertised BB5 with full sets of all Meeples (including phantoms) in all 8 colours then they could have reasonably have charged more and sold more copies.

The compelling feature of BB5 was the long unavailable Wheel of Fortune and it was aimed at established players who for many years were unable to get that product as a standalone.  I bought BB5 for that and to get additional tiles to make up my own expansions.

Now I fully understand and accept that over the course of 15 years, incompatibilities with various stages of product development are going to  arise.  The phantoms were a great twist on the game but switching from wood to translucent plastic probably meant that they could not be re-issued at the same frequency as the original wood, so I can accept that they may not return.  However to go out of your way to introduce an incompatibility with extra meeple colours for only some of the Meeples at the same time as the release of Carcassonne II which (as a new line ) does not have the extra colours well that is just HiG looking for issues to upset people.

I thought Carcassonne II was the product aimed at new players of the game, maybe BB5 was aimed at brand new players who had a longing to play it the old way?   ???

My point is that wagon, mayor, barn, and Phantom!!! are fully playable even if you are using just the base game. Admittedly The Abbey tiles do have several pennants but so does the base game.  But it was very disappoining for them to introduce new colours with no way to get a full set without perhaps a relatively expensive mail order option and even then - no phantoms in pink or purple.   >:(
