Title: Sorting through the rivers
Post by: carca82 on September 03, 2022, 04:25:58 AM
So I was sorting my collection around and I decided to collect all of my rivers in one place. Here's them all (BB = Big Box, e6 = Expansion #6, BG = Base Game):

(https://i.postimg.cc/9F3PYgcJ/PXL-20220903-110723312.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I have some doubts. Please help me understand if I "got it right".
  • "BB2" and "e6 C2" are both RIVER II, the one included in the various Count, King and Robber editions.
  • "BG1", "BG2", "BB6", "BG3" and "BB7" are all, for all intents and purposes, RIVER I, no matter of the small differences among editions (added gardens from BG2, added monastery on BG3 lake tile, added road on source tile from BG3)
  • "20th" is an edition on its own, called RIVER 20TH, with a double tile and more/different normal tiles.

Is this all correct? There is no such thing as RIVER III, right?

Officially The River III is the version of The River I included in Big Box 5 that includes 2 tiles with Pigs and 2 with Vineyards on them. It also is the only Carc1.0 version of The River with watermarks on the tiles.

River III is unofficial fan-made name. There is indeed no such thing as River III, the proper name would be the River I BB5 version.
So yes
@carca82 your understanding of the matter as you described it, is correct.

River III is unofficial fan-made name.

Being listed as Fluss III (River III) on the tile list posted on Cundco.de doesn't make it official?

Depends on ...

This list was made by CarcF de members and cundco adopted it to use for ordering of spare tiles.

So origin of name is fan and never confirmed by HiG, isn't it?

Indeed. It is not official. That list is fan-made so it is not surprising it has fan-made names. CundCo only uses the list - it is basically a favor from german CarcForum. There never was any official River III.

Wow, what a perfect visual comparison of most of river elements in the game! Of the items not on display, if I see it correctly, there are only 2 pieces featuring a river in GQ11 within C1 and 3 pieces in Cutcassonne within C2 if these really count... And this may not change soon as there is presumably no river in the Mists over Carcassonne as far as the so far released pics and videos show. Or ... ? :-)

In terms of tile configs, that's all of m I think.
Of course there are more oddities out there, such as the river 1 with the pc game codes, and the River 1 with light backs, not to mention all the different tile orientations, but those don't have game play impacts.

Nice to see the rivers together like that! Thanks for sharing the picture!

Nice collection. Technically you're only missing the C1 river from BB5 which has sheep and vinyard tiles, and the extra river tiles from the GQ11 promo.

There's also the original C1 river II tiles that don't have the crown marks.

Cool. I never realized that River I and River II are so similar and almost same...
