Title: Doubts about the Road Tiles Alignment
Post by: Il.Socio on February 08, 2016, 11:32:11 PM
Hi all :)
I just played to Carcassonne with friends, but we have some doubts about the roads and I hope you can help...

During the game we can have a partial match, or even a mismatch for the alignment of the roads... (see the attachment)
Are those combination both valid? only the partial? none of them?

Thank you in advance! :)

They're both totally valid as moves - just aesthetically bad.

Yep. Nothing to worry about. It's a match. :)

He can still worry if he wants to :)

It bugs me like crazy when roads don't line up. Did they at least fix that in Carcassonne 2?

It's almost certain that the error originates in alignment during the printing/punching of the tiles rather than the artwork - they only have to be off by half a road width and the roads don't line up perfectly in certain combinations (you can see the lower pair in the examples are oriented up & down by the WoF graphic). Obviously I've not checked all 71! (8.5x10101) tile combinations in my set - but the tolerances are small in the bulk printing world - you wouldn't notice if the page on your newspaper was shifted by 6mm in any direction for example)

That is correct. The printing sheet dis-alignment cause.
Bear in mind, back then this was just a fun game and not an ordeal of focus to details and such.

If I remember correctly, this has been improved in v.2, even the River.

Building roads by matching tiles is a huge part of the game. So having those roads line up correctly should be a core objective and if printing errors could cause problems, then printing should be better monitored and/or the printers should be held more accountable. To have the tiles misaligned by so much that people genuinely question whether it's a legal placement is quite poor, in my opinion. It's fairly minor but still something that could have been done better.

The game is still fun and will continue to be fun; I don't see how this is relevant. If I knew about the game in 2000 the misalignment would have bothered me then too.

There are endless reason as to why. For all we know, Klaus-Jürgen himself had objections but the producers refused due to the money costs reprinting these. Even reprinting this several times could have an cost issue.

Rest assure, this annoys me as well, but my love for the game will trump many (very many!) errors and decisions. :)
