The Marketplace / Does Cundco do shipping to Canada?
« on: September 12, 2015, 03:42:02 PM »
I was looking through the Cundco site and under user registration , where you are supposed to select your country,  I realized that Canada was not listed.

Was it something we said??

General / game counter tray
« on: September 09, 2015, 06:43:32 AM »
While Carcassonne does not use a lot of tokens, I find that with the trade goods tokens , ferries and gold bars that handling the smaller items can be a clumsy job.

My fingers find it difficult trying to get the smaller items out of straight sided  containers.

I am considering buying some form of game counter tray and just wondered what anyone else was using.

I must confess that I do not play JCloister as often as I would like to.

To be honest once the game starts to attempt to get it's followers onto one of my cities, my eyes just glaze over and I lose interest.

Is there a setting where the game will just focus on making the best use of it's own tiles and leave me alone to make the best of mine.

As an older player just looking to pass the time in a relaxing manner this would appeal to me.   :)

and the number 1 game is ????

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/aug/28/20-awesome-board-games-you-may-never-have-heard-of

the tile-based farming / castle building / road-based thievery simulator has enduring popularity, and is still winning new fans the globe over. It’s a game that’s a dream to play in pubs, even if you have to wear the curiosity of fellow locals with a fixed grin at times. The game has loads of add-on packs to increase the complexity. “For me, it is the ultimate,” says an anonymous French man who owns a lot of board games.

“Well designed, well crafted, never the same scenarios. Clever extension packs which keep the game fresh,” murmured one reader with approval. “A brilliant game with near infinite re-playability

Official Rules / Do roads end in Wheel of fortune?

Does the rim on the wheel terminate the roads on the start tile that touch it, just want to confirm.

The plague

From the S-CAR 7.4 page 177

“It is also possible to divide a swarm of fleas by choosing to move one of them.”

Does moving a (presumably active) flea take the place of choosing a flea from the supply or selecting a latent flea to move?

Disclaimer  --  If your heart is set on a set of 6 phantoms and in the nice meeple shaped coloured storage box then read no further, this post is not for you.

In 2011 HiG released the Carcassonne Anniversary edition with everything in a large meeple shaped box and the standard 40 wooden Meeples (8 in each of the 5 basic colours) were replaced by clear acrylic ones.  Shortly afterwards these same clear acrylic Meeples were sold separately as the Phantom.

Hoard 'O Bits (http://hoardobits.com/) makes its business by apparently buying full sets of stuff then breaking them up and selling the individual components.  They are still trying to sell the translucent Meeples from the Anniversary edition.

CARCASSONNE BITS ANNIVERSAY EDITION - 8x TRANSLUCENT BLUE FOLLOWERS

Now the catch is they are selling the individual colours in sets of 8 so you have to buy a set in each of the 5 colours.  Last time I checked they had between 8 & 12 copies of each set.

The price is very reasonable as each set is $1.86.  So 8 sets of 5 phantoms (black, blue, red, green, yellow)  will cost you $9.30 with shipping and handling at a flat rate (including International, they claim) of $8.25 for a total $17.55 US dollars.  Therefore it will cost you $2.19 U.S  2.05 Euro per set of phantoms.  You might want to pick up some other items at the same time to take advantage of the flat shipping rate but the Carcassonne pickings on this site are pretty slim.

If you are able to split the costs with 1 or 2 friends then it becomes very affordable.

Also the Phantom expansion is compatible with both the Winter Carcassonne edition and Carcassonne II, so you can have separate sets of phantoms for these versions.  I keep my winter edition in its original box separate from all of my regular Carcassonne stuff.  The extras I will keep and maybe able to swap for something I don't have, next time there is a board gaming event in town

Anything Else / Change of season
« on: June 19, 2015, 02:21:43 PM »

When it comes to noting the change of the seasons it is normally summer/autumn when the leaves start to change colour or autumn /winter with the first snow or frost or especially winter/ spring when the snow melts and buds start to blossom that we remember.  This year for me it is different.

We had a Black-capped chickadee nesting in a hollow in an old apple tree next to our deck and we have spent the past 5 or 6 weeks watching them come and go to the nest.  The past three weeks especially were an example of constant hard work as the birds would supply an endless supply of grubs, firstly to the female who was brooding the eggs, then both of them feeding the chicks.

Now just a day or so before the start of summer they are suddenly gone and the stillness in the tree where they used to come and go is immense.

A happy yet poignant event of the kind that the poet Philip Larkin could capture so well.

I wondered if anyone has kept a record of how long it takes to play the average league game?  It would be interesting (at least to me , but then I do not have much of a life) to see how these times compared to the estimates given on the Carcassonne box documentation.

Just wondering if anyone has this information already.  thanks

1. While the main copies of the game are kept secure (in little plastic bags inside a larger plastic box), a duplicate set (made up from my collection of duplicate copies of the game, which I am fortunate enough to be able to afford) is edited down to 12 river tiles and a 72 tile draw deck  made up from all of my preferred expansions (my mix has base game, I&C, T&B, A&M, P&D, Tower, H&S). I use non competitive Carcassonne Central variants for P&D - The Chatelaines and the Tower - Reeve and Quartermaster.  However no custom tiles or game pieces, everything as it is sold.

2. This draw deck is kept separate and is randomly mixed ready to pop in the draw bag, tile tower or placed face down on the table.

3. Full sets of Meeples are kept for each player in separate small ziploc style bags along with bridges, abbeys and tower pieces.  No counting, no sorting, just ready to hand out to each player.

4. The Big and Mayor followers are not easily differentiated by novice players so a white elastic band is placed around the waist and shoulder to differentiate.

5. The river is laid out on the table to give players plenty of choice in placing their first tile and to avoid having to “respond” to other player's first move.  Also this river layout includes 2 cloisters which no one can claim as the tile is laid before the start of the game.  However since the cloisters have connecting road segments, this is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how that “hard to understand” follower, the wagon, can be used.

6. Essential - Each player is given a double sided single sheet of paper illustrating and describing all the Structures, Meeples and Game icons with a brief description of scoring and how they are to be used.  Is this sheet as good as the game documentation ? NO.  Is it anywhere near the quality of the S-CAR? - NO . But it is good enough to get the game going and give everyone a chance to grasp the main elements and score lots of points.  I much prefer getting everything onto a single sheet double sided and putting it in a clear page protector.

7. First game was with someone who was normally reluctant to play as the base game had been “played out” too many times and adding in the expansions made the game too long especially when they did not understand how to play the different Meeple and tile types.

8. First game elapsed time with 2 players, from the entire set of game pieces starting out in the box to farms being scored was less than 60 minutes at a relaxed uninterrupted pace.  And I lost by about 100 points.

9. Just about every tile drawn resulted in a meeple being placed, a claimed structure being extended or being scored.  This avoided the “drawing yet another road segment” with “nowhere really to put it”.

10. The tile layout was very dense, almost a continuous sheet of tiles which supported cloister and tower / field granary scoring. A large number of meeples were in play for most of the game.

11. The usual obsessive meeple and tile counting took additional time after the game ended but I did this on my own afterwards as I am able to leave everything on the playing surface and tidy up later (no little kids to mess it up)

12. With luck this should lead to many more games and perhaps eventually playing with larger decks.

Official Rules / Barn and tie breaker hill

Can a barn be placed on an intersection of 4 tiles if one (or more) of the tiles is a hill with a tie breaker flag?

Official Rules / Barn and Tower foundations.
« on: June 06, 2015, 02:26:31 PM »
Some of the field tower foundation tiles have the foundation very close to, but not exactly on, the corner of the tile. Does the presence of a field tower foundation tile prevent the placement of a barn?

I have started using the JPEG tile images in JCloisterZone for creating custom tiles.  I was wondering if you had any images for tiles that you have not yet included in the online game.  Example Wheel of Fortune or Ferries.

I would appreciate any images you could share

thanks.

I have started playing against JCloisterZone using the Abbey and Mayor expansion.

There are two tiles which feature cities with bridges that cross over cities.

I used to think these tiles were interesting, now I think they are just plain evil.   >:D
