Yeah, I don't find it pretentious. It's a stacking game; the shapes are heavy and allow for interesting positioning. I always like to try ridiculous placements.  Ask @danisthirty about the animal stacking game we played "Beats of Balance" at Essen back in 2016.  We didn't really follow the obvious rules, and the guy watching ended up taking a photo of our monstrosity... wish I took a photo.

At Essen this year there was another dexterity game about cats and telephone wires.  I played a couple of games with some randoms, and we all felt that it was too small, and the pieces were not heavy enough; so there was a lot of wibbly movement that was hard to control.

Misfits has night heavy pieces, and I like that over time they'll get a few dents which might add to the chaos.  Some talent folks have painted their pieces too.  The designer's a nice person too. He's dropped me emails and made sure my copy arrived in time for Xmas, even though I said I was happy to wait.  He's done a few demos around my area, but unfortunately I couldn't make them.  Hopefully, I'll catch him in the future.  If I get time I'll starts a new thread about it.

Hi @kothmann - They are all sold out of the 1st edition, but there is a wait list for the second edition.

I think you can be added to the list:

You can also drop them an email hello [A-T] If you mention me (Decar) as your referral and apparently you'll be price matched and given priority when the 2nd edition prints.

It's a fun game. My wife likes it because she beat me on our first outing.  I like how all the pieces are wooden, and slightly rough. The game allows for a lot of handicapping for younger family members too!

Wonderful Christmas and Birthday hauls everyone!

Only one board game for us this year:

I'd recommend that everyone checks out this classic before the 2nd printing begins.

Because Tunnels needs a big overhaul to be a reliable expansion; and Cathars was reprinted 2 more times.
Also HiG didn't produced these expansions for their commercial outfit.
They were created as promos for magazines.

Back to the OP: I'd be inclined to play with both expansions on JCZ and see if you like them.  If you do then open and play with them.  If you don't you can keep them in your Carcassonne vault.

General / Re: C3 Artwork Discussion.

Moritz Brunnhofer has said that Carcassonne needed a refresh and so it happened.  I think people need to remember that you're talking about a group of people's professional work.  Someone's been given a direction, and then spent a great deal of time refreshing the C2 artwork, before it's been reviewed by lots of other people who get to make a decision over what HiG's product looks like.

C3 is marked by the a change of artist. When I spoke with Anne Pätzke many years ago, the grossly opinioned and frankly rude community commentary had made its way back to her.  Some years has passed, and it seems like the majority of the community accepts that C2 was the artwork.  Things need to be modernized to remain relevant.  Remember: If you don't like it, you aren't required to keep purchasing it.  I'm sure the changes made to C3 allowed the new artist to become familiar with the work.

Looking at C2 - I've never been to a city where there are 60 foot gaps between houses, demarking the sides of an arbitrary square every 100-200 feet.

I've started to call it River 川 to keep both groups of people happy.

It has been, work and family has been most chaotic.  It was nice to see everyone at Spiel this weekend though, and before work kicks off again, I thought I'd best get to the forum.  I hope you've been well too!

I've not tried Venice Connection, but I think I have read someone's review of it. Looks neat.

I quite like Kingdomino.  I seem to recall preferring Queendomino, for the little extras it offered. But all the subsequent outings and expansions have left us disappointed.  I think this might simply be that the original is the best.  :(y)

Welcome to the forum melaniewalker! I've been catching up on posts, as I've not been able to get to the forum for a long long time!

That sounds like a great game, it's always nice when you make the most of the tiles that you've been given.

I've certainly had many close games, but I think my favourite was playing against Udo Schmitz in-person, who organized Carcassonne-on-tour.  It was a deciding match of a team tournament, and with my penultimate tile, I made a vague attempt and glomming onto a field to take majority.

I stupidly drew my next tile during his turn, and looked at it.....I wish I hadn't because it was precisely the tile I needed.  Udo thought it best to score points, but he was tentatively considering blocking any chance of me joining.  I knew if he made eye contact with me he'd know I had the tile I needed.... I have a weak poker face.  Thankfully I he didn't look, and I was able to win the game, and the tournament.

"Unbelievable" Udo echoed.

Ah great memories.

We'll have to try and organize something soon, so that I can give you the double-sided Wilko tape.  The calendar is looking pretty full at the moment though.  Perhaps nearer Christmas?
