Base game - Unable to close all cities.
« on: July 30, 2015, 06:53:14 AM »
So hello all,

Today i was looking at the contest and i noticed that is it impossible to close all cities with the base game
Unless you are playing with the base game of BB5.
Due to the extra tile available in BB5 ( an CRFR-tile)

Is anyone of you able to close all cities with basegame only?

This has been known for quite some time, at least from my part.

We've had some fun with this earlier this year or last year in another thread, where we tried to find out the highest amount of cities one is able to complete.
World record holder for a single game of Carcassonne using 10 007 tiles!

The "Homework" section of the newsletter linked to by quevy was all about finding the most valuable city and I think we all agreed on it being 84 points in various different ways.

It looks to me as though there will always be at least 1 city face left open judging by the screenshots I've seen so far, but my maths isn't good enough to go about proving whether it would be possible for all cities to be closed. I would be interested to know for sure though.

Funny is that with our little contest of Decar, this could easily sneak up about 11 points extra (2x 3 for farm, 4 for closing city and 1 for the road) if someone decided to do a photo entry and play with the BB5 version of the base game.

The total number of city edges is odd, so it's impossible to close all the cities.
With the extra city edge, it's then mathematically possible to close all the cities. And I just read the post at http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=924.0 again, and I'm convinced that there's such a case.
Hopefully I'm not being too nerdy.

This is another good reason why Carcassonne needs an extra tile, like BB5  :(y)

Maybe it was intended to match with River I. This also has an odd amount of city sides. River 2 has an even amount.

Then I am curious about the roads. Do they complete. If so, can one make all roads and cities completed in one layout?

The total number of road sides is even, so I'll try constructing such a layout.

Sorry for the blurry image, but you get the idea.
I need to credit quevy for the layout of the huge city and surrounding area. I rearranged a few tile to close all the road. The hole is supposed to be the starting tile in BB5.
Now that it's possible to close all the cities and roads, I'll challenge people (including myself) to construct a layout in which all cities, roads, and cloisters are finished using the base game in BB5.
I'm aware that using the original base game (72 tiles in total) and River I, it's possible to finish everything (attached). I think I saw the picture on this forum, but I cannot remember the original post. Also, I remember the author of this layout recognizes that the river has an immediate U-turn, which violates the rule; therefore, I'll challenge everyone and myself to fix that problem.

The bottom image with the river tiles makes a great background repeater. :(y)

Fantastic posts ny! Thanks so much. :(y)

How long did it take to arrange everything in the bottom photo? I've given you a merit for it regardless of how long it took! :)
