Title: Ratings and Comments on Fan-Made Expansions
Post by: Amorpheus on August 16, 2013, 12:09:58 PM
One of the common questions posted on this site is an inquiry into which fan expansions are the general favorites, including a similar post this week.

I'm likely opening myself up to harsh criticisms of my own expansion, but I think it would be helpful to other members and to the authors if we could encourage members (if there is a way) to leave ratings and comments for fan expansions they have printed and used.  Of course, such a rating would only be as helpful as it is honest, and there are bound to be ratings from members who haven't printed and played the expansion.  If possible, maybe we can even add a poll to each download to show how many members have actually printed/played it.  Very few of the downloads have ratings, even though I know them to be great expansions...and I'm as guilty of this as everyone else.

I've downloaded every fan expansion on this site (I believe), but when it comes to actually making tiles, I seem to have much less time.  Knowing which fan expansions are the best received and most recommended could help others like me decide which ones to make next.  I'm curious how others feel about this and whether we could somehow make this work.

I agree with this. If you've played a fan expansion, please rate it in the downloads, and possibly review it as well.

I've rated some of them.  I haven't played very many though so my rating is dependant upon how much I like the sound of it.  I do rate and leave a comment though when I find one I like.

Great point.

I don't know if its possible, but would be helpful (I think at least) if the fan expansions could be sorted by certain criteria such as
- number of new tiles
- need for extra figures

I was thinking about adding sub-categories based on number of tiles.

I was thinking about adding sub-categories based on number of tiles.

How would that work? Would they only reside under those subcategories or are they more like "tags"?

If you have a tag like system then would it be possible for anyone to tag them with useful sorting terms?

Or at least users with a certain level.

I am in the middle of such a project myself.
Have listed all the 165 fan-made expansions and variations in a Excel-sheet and are on my way to write down number of tiles and such things.
Found two of the expansions in the Rules & General section, they must be misplaced.

Have also started to rate them, although I have only printed and played 24 of them.
And that's only expansions that doesn't have a lot of extra tiles.
I will continue to rate even those that I haven't played because that will help me to choose what fan-made expansions I will print next time.

Which ones?

-Wells
-Reservoirs & Granaries

And only the 1.0 version of Apothecaries and Tithe Barns is included,
not the 2.1 version of Apothecaries, but that may be intentional.

I may be wrong, but I thought kettlefish already posted a similar spreadsheet, listing all fan expansions, tiles, wood, etc.  I believe its scale was beyond just CarcC and CarcF even. Not trying to impede Carc creativity; just thought maybe some of the features you want to include have already been counted or identified, to ease your task.

In the first post you can find the pdf file:
Liste der In.offiziellen Erweiterungen V08c.pdf
CarcC fan-expansions at page 8-13
But the newest corretion tips are not included yet - latest update was the 22 07 2013.

The workshop is for CarcF members.

Thanks, but the sheet is not complete, and there are even errors in it and now I am almost finished with my own sheet.
But can someone send that sheet as an Excel file to my email.

I am done with the list of fan-made expansions (variations) and are almost done with rating them.
I will put up my top 10 list here on the forum in a few days.
From now on I will have all fan-made expansions and variations in the same list.
It's just bothersome to have them in two or more different lists.
The only separation I will make is that I will still write variant or expansion in the rules when I do my own expansions.
And of course, not yet completed expansions will be placed in another list.
Talking about that, who will I need to talk to for having some of my expansions from the workshop to a completed download.

I think that after wicke finish his file, this could be added to the new version of CAR

In the CAR is all what comes from the official rules and clarification,
here and there some house rules, but not the fan-expansions...

But for some reason there are quite a few fan-made variants listed in the CAR.

Seeing how large CAR is for the official rules alone, I'd like to have the fanmade put in a separate file.

This is not a document with rules so it has nothing to do with the CAR.
This is a list of completed and not-yet completed fan-made expansions and variants with information about number of tiles and extra pieces required.

I was thinking in add a list of fan-made expansions and variants that could be a reference, without the rules of them of course

But for some reason there are quite a few fan-made variants listed in the CAR.

I must admit I never understood the reasoning behind that...

Several years ago, HiG published some fan-made variants on their web site. Matt decided that earned them a place in the CAR.

HiG had some fan-made expansions on their site as well.
If that would be the trigger to get a place in the CAR,
then I would be griefstrucken to see the railroads expansion in the CAR.

Since I was done going through fan-made expansions on CarcC,
I have now gone on to BGG.
(I will not go through CarcF since I don't know german).
But I don't find five that I have heard of:
-The Oracle
-Fairy Trader and Ferry Friend
-That here may be food in my house
-Dominions
-City on Fire

Anyone who knows where to find these ?

I haven't heard of any of them except That there may be food in my house- that was the original name for the revised Tithe Barns (latest version here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/o2oyb2j33g4fegw/ ), but since it was kind of long and people just referred to it as tithe barns so I changed it back.

387 fan-made expansions (variants) !!!
I have now gone through all fan-made expansions on BGG as well.
The total is now 252 completed (in Word or Pdf file) and 135 still not completed.
Many are of course variants in the same direction and some I have not even listed
because they are too close to an existing expansion or not enough thought through.

I will present a couple of these fan-made expansions in the workshop.
I have already started with this one:
Pre-game Meeple drafting (by David Thornton)
Check it out if you have the time, and please comment.

Did you complete the list of completed fan-made expansions and variants with information about number of tiles and extra pieces required?

Please, could you share this file?

I have sent you a private message.
