...we play mahjong instead?
I'm in!

Actually, I got slightly internet famous when a video of me playing mahjong with some students was posted on a website that is sort of a Chinese instagram:
http://www.xiaohongshu.com/discovery/item/61aaadfd000000000102d197?share_from_user_hidden=true&xhsshare=WeixinSession&appuid=55571a7ec2bdeb32ccc194bd&apptime=1643876225

It would be great if someone (@Scott?) could figure out how to have beautiful square Carcassonne tiles made from the same very strong plastic that Mahjong tiles are made of.  The feel of a good heavy mahjong tile set is even better than the feel of my double-sided Carcassonne tiles!

I’m honoured to be thought of first when it comes to sourcing manufacturers. :D

Without looking, I think we would need to find a Chinese manufacturer that is willing to do custom-sizes tiles, or resort to 3D printing, because I’m not aware of any games that come with square tiles. I would be inclined to design them with small recesses to accept a sticker with the tile image on them. The recesses should help protect the artwork. There are also ways of adding a clear protective layer, but that would dramatically increase the cost.

I was browsing the forum and came across this post that may be of interest to those who are pondering the tile shuffling question:

https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3526

Tiered deployment gives you more control over how often a feature will appear, without completely negating the random aspect of the tile drawn.

It is the most recent (2017) of many great posts by @Christopher.

For those who print fan extensions, do you sheathe your tiles?

As I wrote in reply 8.
But it depends how your tiles looks like. I have luck, that some tiles I have were made by @Chmura and @Matisek they have great experience with them. So you can see any difference when you check it from side.
And some of them are printed on UV flatbed printer, so again, you can recognize which one is fan made or original.

At the end of a game, we grab up the tiles in small groups & stack them.  Then I put them in the box randomly.  I have so many tiles that the placement in the box must be an efficient use of space so they are on an edge & in rows.  To set up a new game, I take the tiles out & place them in stacks, usually over a dozen stacks without looking at the fronts.  This is sufficiently random going into the new game.
I'm not screwing up your city.  I'm building roads to it so that you can bring in materials.

Not yet... I haven't even sleeved my original ones yet either... (You may hear "sacrilege" from the sidelines ;))

Well. I think tiles are for playing. So I don't sleeve them. On of my older friend told me that you can buy new one or print them again.
