Official Rules / Over Hill and Dale - question regarding hiking

So, last night I played a game of Over Hill and Dale for the first time. The rules were in German (not our first language) but I think we muddled through pretty well. Just to confirm though: when you extend your road and you choose to have your wanderer take a hike, you can choose which way you let your wanderer hike; it doesn't have to be a hike to the newly-placed tile.
So, if you take the example given in the rules in 3b, if red were to extend the road again in a subsequent turn, it can choose to hike to the newly placed tile, scoring just 1 point, or it can choose to hike to the starting point of the road, scoring 3 points. So, if you're lucky enough to be able to make a long road, you could potentially score this road a bunch of times by choosing to hike this road whenever you extend it.
Is this correct?
