This is one of those phenomenal edge cases that will one day make it its way into the advent quiz.

[Q6] Since the placement of an Abbey tile has certain conditions, there may be only a few valid spots to place it, if any. Once all normal tiles have been drawn, can a player decide not to play their remaining Abbey tile and finish the game right away?  It may be possible that none of the possible valid placements is favorable to the player (for example, the Abbey may complete a big city that only other players will score).

[A6] If you have a tile that is possible to place, you have to place it. Even if you wouldn't like to place it at any valid location.

So, during the game, you can choose to use the Abbey or not. However, when there is no other option (after all tiles have been placed), you have to place it.

Does this mean that players are forced to play their abbeys at the end of the game if there is an available space to play it? This could result in players being forced to finish a previously blocked city which could cause large point swings at the end of the game.

I sent a question to HiG. >:D Let's see if the placement is mandatory in the case of Abbeys.

As you can see above, the placement of the Abbey would be mandatory even if it goes against your interest.

OK. I can live with that. players should be careful with their abbey tiles!

It brings new near to end game strategy :D

That’s what I assumed the answer would be. Just one more thing to keep in mind as your approach the end of the game.

I can definitely foresee an advent quiz question where the player has an abbey, a German castle, and a selection of halflings and has to make the best play at the end of the game.

I personally like that they returned to the rule from version C1. Personally, I always use the abbey during the game. Sometimes it is not a good idea to dry this card in stock. Just for that case at the end that you don't want to place but you have to

"You change the rules all the time just to make the game easier for you" and "already told you it was better this way but you obviously misunderstood the rules first time you read them" are now 2 sentences I must prepare to hear...

Ha ha ha!

People will always resort to saying any of this if you know the rules and their updates better than anyone else in the room...  :o

Anything can happen. If you got rid of your Abbey, an opponent may profit from a yummy hole on the board and score up to 9 points on top of anthing else completed by placing their Abbey.
