Road issue in Crop Circles I
« on: August 29, 2015, 06:11:11 AM »
Just found out that the road in this tile from Crop Circles I is considered blocked from at least one direction. That shouldn't be the case, right?

Indeed. It's not obvious at all but CAR says that it is NOT a continuous road with three branches.

Indeed, it's implemented as three separate roads on the Android application too.

How peculiar. The original German rules don't mention this, and there is in my opinion no reason to doubt whether the road continues or not. An opponent in a recent game even based one of his key moves on the assumption that this is just one road. I'm curious about the origin of this statement.

[Edit]
Found it, http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=751.msg8198#msg8198. Apparently, as usual a junction separates roads. What about the various roundabouts? They all continue as far as I know. Oh well...

I always treat that intersection as one continuous road when I play and I have no intention of doing otherwise.

Usually there's something to physically break up the roads though. This doesn't look like a usual tile in this respect at all.

I'd say this looks much more like a continuous road, but I guess I'll just have to house-rule it that way for the sake of letting common sense prevail every once in a while.

I don't have "Crop Circles 1", never played it, and never gave this tile a close look on CAR or the like, but I would have agree with whaleyland and dan. Cross roads, which break up roads normally  always have some indication like a little village or at least some bushes. So any intersection without should be treated like a continuing road. However, with the subsequent HIG-clarification provided by CAR, I would go for the official. But then again, I don't have CC1, and don't intend hunting it down. I'm quite contend, that the tiles from CC2 are more intuitive to interpret and would rather use them, when getting the urge to play with Crop Circles.

Also for me the case had been clear when we played with this tile: one road with three ends. However, the surprise was big when JCZ foiled my brilliant turn by not counting the street as one, but more.  >:D Reading about that rule clarification was quite annoying, so we decided to continue with our house rule.

This is just absurd. Why draw it like that if they wanted three roads? How would they propose drawing the artwork if they did want one road? (scratching my head)

If JCZ has it as three roads there aught to be a checkbox option to have it be one road. Like the pig herd tile.
I just drew the perfect tile for my MonKnighThieFarmer!

Simply because they forgot to draw the bush in the middle of it.

I really agree. Or one could use a fan made tile design with bush on it. This could avoid many angry players. ;)

Idea: what about hint assigned to some tiles. Like when you draw this tile game shows "Don't forget it's 3 separated roads."

I wonder if an variant option is worthwhile for this tile.  Perhaps someone should consider photoshopping a junction to it too!

I don't think this is an issue with JCZ or even with the design of the tile. The official rule is what's at fault as it makes no sense to insist that this is 3 separate roads. I won't rant on about it as it won't make any difference anyway, but in a visual game I think it's daft to insist that our eyes are deceiving us and that there is an invisible road ending in the middle of this T-junction.

JCZ has always done a great job of sticking very closely to the official rules as we understand them. I don't think any exceptions should be made over this tile.
