Not really true. BGA is also free but you have limitations to create a game.
True fact, thank you for bringing that up.
My point, or should I say my "observation", was essentially that anyone generating profit from the product, which includes BGA, should make sure to have authorisation from HiG before proceeding with their business. That was what I was implicating.
My future product will be free, so I feel like licensing it would be unnecessary.
Giving your product away for free doesn’t mean that licensing is not necessary. If an licensee can claim that your product is harming their sales, they have a valid claim against you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The new Winter Edition arrived while I was away from home the past month.
Is this the one with actual monasteries?
Not sure what you mean by that. This is the 2022 Winter Edition (WE3). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

BGA and TTS are licensed. JCZ is not.

I didn’t see the poll on Tapatalk. Having reviewed the suggested themes, I’m not excited about any of them. We’ve already had train and prehistoric spin-offs, and the other two don’t make sense to me.
If I had to come up with a theme for embellishing the existing C3 artwork, I would suggest a literary/folk/fairy tale direction. My knowledge of medieval literature is limited to English tales of King Arthur and Robin Hood, but there are many European folk and fairy tales which I think would be familiar to most people.

It sounds like HiG needs to clarify what sort of things are too far outside the scope. When I think about a special limited edition, I think about the beautiful artwork by Graham Whieldon. I would very much love to have a physical set of that.
The previous limited edition (the medieval book) was beautifully done on the outside, but prohibitively expensive. My primary wish for whatever this 40th anniversary edition looks like is that it would be affordable. It should only be limited in the sense that there is a single print-run.
With the continued advancements in laser-cutting and engraving, I wonder what the cost would be for a wooden-tile edition of Carcassonne. The tiles would not need to be much thicker than they are currently, and I think with the right box design it could be made smaller than the standard box to help economize shipping costs.

Both are showing in stock at Asmodee’s US-based warehouse. https://shop.asmodee.com/search?q=CarcassonneAs existing stock is consumed, expansions will be updated to C3. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Using original artwork would be best.
There are already several implementations of Carcassonne, so reinventing the wheel isn’t necessary unless you’re doing it for the experience. BoardGameArena is the most popular, followed by TableTopSimulator and JCloisterZone. There are others as well.

Many of us have done scans of the tiles, and you would need to do your own too because copyright law prohibits us from sharing.

Any word from other publishers?
ZMG hasn’t said anything and won’t because they’re more interested in promoting other stuff. Based on my last interaction with Asmodee, it’s much the same story as with HiG: when C2 stock is depleted, they will order C3 stock. We know that Marcel has done the tiles for I&C and T&B because we got them in our Big Boxes. I think it is safe to assume that he has at least started on updating the other expansions, and some may already be done. The big question is what the boxes will look like. Since the C3 base game got a total box redesign, I’m expecting similar for the expansions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You can find the curved ones here:

The other were derived from the normal ones by applying boolean operations. You can find one version of the nomal bridge here:

For mere mortals who don’t know how to apply Boolean operations, some ready-to-print files would be helpful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When you only have a Phantom, it can be placed as a regular meeple, in which case it’s not acting as a Phantom anymore.

As Bumsakalaka mentioned, the Phantom has not been re-released since the C1 days, so we rely on clarifications from the publisher and opinions from our rules experts.
I defer to others on this, but from what I can see, the Phantom cannot be placed as a Phantom unless another meeple or neutral figure has already been placed, so because the 20th Anniversary tile is giving an alternative to placing a meeple, you also lose out on being able to place a Phantom during that turn. Something to consider when deciding whether to use the tile’s special ability or not!
