Other Games / The Card Game of Oz
« on: March 14, 2013, 06:19:34 PM »
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/springboard/the-card-game-of-oz

This Kickstarter campaign is in the final 24 hours, and it hasn't done nearly as well as I would have expected. We need another $3200 to unlock the next stretch goal. If you're a Wizard of Oz fan, check it out.

Other Games / Dungeon Roll

This Kickstarter Campaign from Tasty Minstrel Games is entering the final days and a lot of stretch goals have been unlocked. The publisher is expecting this to turn into a franchise game, and the price is quite low compared to other games. MSRP will be $20, so by getting in on the Kickstarter you can save $5 and get some exclusive rewards (which don't add a lot to the game; for the people who like to feel special).

Official Rules / Tournament format
« on: March 04, 2013, 12:45:19 PM »
If I'm reading correctly, the official tournament rules appear to suggest that all games are played 1 vs 1. If that is the case, I feel that you miss out on certain types of interactions. It would also make a tournament take a long time.

Are qualifying games also 1 vs 1?

Is there a different format that would allow for 6-player games? Would such a format work if the number of players didn't divide by six?

News and Events / International TableTop Day
« on: February 28, 2013, 06:17:55 AM »
On March 30th, 2013, premium YouTube channel Geek & Sundry (The Guild, TableTop, Written By A Kid) asks all of our fans to go to their friendly local game store, community center, or host an event at home and play more games. International TableTop Day is a reminder to spend more time and strengthen the bonds with the people who matter most, our friends and family, by playing games together. Tabletop gaming promotes many positive social and cognitive benefits like increased communication, team work, planning, and is an excellent stress relieving activity for all ages.

International TableTop Day also represents the one year anniversary of the launch of the hit show TableTop, hosted by Wil Wheaton (Star Trek, Big Bang Theory, Leverage). TableTop has been a well-reported boon to the international gaming community, not only creating whole new generations of tabletop gamers, but also providing a rising tide that supports many game stores and publishers. TableTop fans have sent us thousands of fan mail responses telling us about how TableTop has rekindled their friendship, brought families together, helped hospital patients find strength to carry on, and even provided peace for grieving families. TableTop has become much more than a show, it has become a shining light for the whole international gaming community. And we want to give back to our fans in a very special way!

International TableTop Day is a celebration for all the fans of tabletop gaming. A single day where the whole world is brought together in a common purpose of spending time together and having fun. We hope you find the resources you need -- to connect new fans to experienced group organizers, retailers with their community, and publishers with the international community -- all in one place. The interactive map hosts all of the game days and parties worldwide. If you don't see an event near you, simply follow the free submission process to create and host your own TableTop Day event that we will promote for you. Download all the free content and collect all the exclusive promotional items made specifically to commemorate this event. All we ask in return is that you share your experience with us by using the social media hashtag #tabletopday on all your posts, pictures, stories, and videos. This way, we can all share in the fun wordwide. Let's for one day, all come together, put down our worries and play more games.

General / New logo
« on: February 16, 2013, 09:33:33 AM »
You may have noticed a very slight change to the Carcassonne Central logo at the top of each page. The difference between the two words was bugging me, so now they are much more similar. I have also updated the rules templates with the new logo: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=184

Official Rules / More CAR for spin-offs?
« on: February 13, 2013, 02:26:44 PM »
Are there any FAQ for spinoffs that don't have a CAR? Are people asking questions about the spinoffs on BGG? I feel like I should highlight all four CAR that we have, not just the two that Chris is maintaining.

Anything Else / Special message from Chris Korfmann
« on: February 10, 2013, 11:21:44 PM »
Our good buddy Chris Korfmann sent me this message via BoardGameGeek exactly one month ago.

Quote
To my friends and members of our happy Carcassonne community. The new year happens to coincide with a fork in the road for me personally, while I have made several resolutions in the past few weeks, I don't necessarily think of them as New Year's resolutions. I'm trying to make myself more healthy and spend more time with my family, mostly by weening myself off the internet and into a pair of gym shorts. While it is not true that the recent techinical difficulties of the site have brought me to the decision to step down as a CC mod, I can't say that the situation doesn't make it a little easier. I would like to nominiate kettlefish to take my place as I'm sure that Marion would do a fine job in that capacity. I wish you well as you continue to explore your enjoyment of this fine pass time. May you always pull the tile you need! Blessings and happy gaming.

General / Keep track of your Carcassonne collection in your forum profile
« on: February 10, 2013, 04:40:40 PM »
Kettlefish suggested that it would be good to explain for newcomers to Carcassonne Central about the custom fields we've added to your forum profile. On the menu near the top of the page, if you hover your mouse over the word "Profile" and then click on "Forum Profile" in the menu that appears, you will be on the page where you can edit your profile. Scroll down a bit and you'll see a list of the Carcassonne games and expansions. If you haven't changed anything here yet, next to each game/expansion it will say "Wants". You can change these to "Owns" or "No interest", depending on your own situation. These fields appear only in your profile and they have no effect on how the forums are displayed to you. Filling them out is just for fun or your own keeping track. This is similar to the feature on BoardGameGeek, but it can be handy to keep track here also if you have a lot more board games in your collection than just Carcassonne.

When you're done making changes to your profile, make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom and click the "Change Profile" button to save.

General / Downloads section
« on: February 09, 2013, 08:00:38 PM »
It took all day, but I was able to rebuild the vast majority of the downloads section. I'm only missing two expansions:

  • Easter-Festival, by Fritz_Spinne, adds Easter-themed tiles and meeples.
  • Origins, by Amorpheus

If anybody has either of these, please upload them to the Downloads section.

The Marketplace / Recommended supplier list
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:48:47 AM »
Before we get into the list, please visit your friendly local game store and investigate their prices. Smaller stores tend to have lower overhead costs than larger stores, and they pass the savings on to the customer. Spend some time chatting with store owners; I've gotten discounts on purchasing several items simultaneously. Friendly local game stores are also a great way to meet other people that like to play board games, and some stores have regularly gaming nights. (Find out which nights are board gaming nights vs. Magic the Gathering; showing up on Magic the Gathering night is awkward.)

Now that you know what the prices are like at your friendly local game store, we invite you to check out the following on-line retailers. On-line retailers have even lower overhead, but you have to pay shipping costs. Calculate the total cost and see what makes the most sense based on where you live. (If you live in an area with no local game stores, the answer will be fairly obvious.)

If you live in North America, I suggest that you support our forum member Carcatronn and buy from his on-line store. He has most of the games, expansions, accessories, and spare parts. He also provides bundle deals that can't be found anywhere else. If you live in Canada (like me), contact him before purchasing to save on shipping cost.

http://www.carcassonneshoppe.com/ - Store closed down

Hans-im-Gluck has an on-line store with many games, expansions, accessories, and spare parts. Several items cannot be found anywhere else. The site is in German, so you'll need to translate some words. If you have Google Chrome, it can automatically translate the pages to English.

http://www.cundco.de/

MeepleSource has a large selection of wooden parts for Carcassonne, as well as apparel and some other things. A few times per year they have sales, which you can find out about by subscribing to their newsletter or "liking" the CarcassonneCentral Facebook page.

http://www.meeplesource.com/index.php?PARTNER=carccentral

I was recently referred to the following company in the United Kingdom which has a wide variety of drawstring bags, for those who want to upgrade their meeple storage to something fancier, or maybe you've outgrown your tile bag and need something larger.

Cleverbaggers mini size bag is 6cm x 9cm. This would probably hold a set of meeples snugly. The "smaller" size 10cm x 13cm might be better suited. The 10cm x 13cm bag should also work well for the tower pieces.

The regular Carcassonne tile bag is 20.5cm x 26.4cm. CleverBaggers regular size bag is 25cm x 35cm, and the large size bag is 38cm x 43cm. If those are still not big enough for your game of MegaCarcassonne, they also have larger sizes, though in fewer color options.

Also worth mentioning that they can do custom printing on the bags for an additional charge. (no minimum order quantity)

http://thecleverbaggers.co.uk/bags/drawstring-bags

FunAgain Games is recommended by several of our forum members. They have good prices on the games and expansions, if you live in the United States or close enough to the border that you have a US mailing address.

http://www.funagain.com/

For games and expansions that are out of print, check the marketplace on BoardGameGeek AND check eBay. Do both of those things and compare prices. Some people ask way too much money for things. You're looking for people that have lost interest in a game and want it to go to a good home, rather than the thrift store profiteers who buy games for $2 and sell them for $40.

When you are browsing on eBay, keep a watchful eye. Some people, either in ignorance or defiance of the law, sell fan-made expansions. DO NOT BUY FAN-MADE EXPANSIONS. Only buy official Carcassonne merchandise. Selling fan-made expansions is not permitted by Hans-im-Gluck. If you see somebody selling a fan-made expansion, report them to eBay and notify the author of the expansion (which usually is somebody from here). Also notify myself and/or Kettlefish so that we can inform Hans-im-Gluck.

Here are some other suppliers of wooden bits (in case you need something for a fan-made expansion):

General / Carcassonne components sizing information
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:16:13 AM »

10th Anniversary Edition

Scoring Track: 220mm* wide x 220mm* tall x 1.83mm thick - 40.88g
Tiles: 45.08mm wide x 45.08mm tall x 1.89mm thick - 2.70g
Meeples: 15.82mm wide x 15.85mm tall x 7.98mm thick - 1.43g
Box: 233mm* wide x 233mm* tall x 65.10mm thick (I don't normally measure the box, but since it's meeple-shaped I thought somebody might be interested.)

* Measured with a ruler; may not be exact.

The Phantom

Meeples: 15.82mm wide x 15.85mm tall x 7.98mm thick - 1.43g
Box: 58.44mm wide x 58.82mm tall x 23.83mm thick - 23.15g (empty)

Naturally I couldn't resist and had to buy one of each color of the box.

The Dice Game

Dice: 15.94mm x 15.68mm x 15.77mm - 5.25g
Box: 110.00mm x 109.50mm x 41.61mm thick - 69.46g

I triple-checked the caliper measurements on the dice and got the same numbers each time. You would expect dice to be perfectly square, but apparently not. The dice line up perfectly with each other regardless of orientation, so you can't really tell the difference just by looking at them. The catapult face is opposite of the meeple face. To the right of the catapult is the CCFF joined face. Left of the catapult is CFCF (two opposing half-rounds). Above the catapult is CCCF, and below is CCFF unjoined. Each die is identical. Let's examine the faces more closely:

Catapult: 15.93mm x 15.86mm = 252.6498mm^2
Meeple is on opposing face and therefore same size.

CCFF joined: 15.86mm x 15.89mm = 252.0154mm^2
CFCF is on opposing face and therefore same size.

CCCF: 15.93mm x 15.71mm = 250.2603mm^2
CCFF unjoined is on opposing face and therefore same size.

The catapult and meeple faces are indeed the largest. The largest face will have a higher percentage of landing because the center of gravity is shifted in the die.

Those are the only ones I have at the moment, but I'll add more measurements as I purchase the games/expansions.

Joff has heard a rumor that the meeples from The Children of Carcassonne will be 23mm tall x 21mm wide.
scotty13 reports that the tiles are 7cm square.
According to GAKDragon, the travel Carcasonne tile bag is 18.5cm wide by 29cm tall.
