Official Rules / Re: Why Escape a Besieged City?
« on: September 10, 2013, 08:39:28 AM »
@Carcking - I completely agree with you! I posted a new thread regarding my revised alternative rules for The Cathars which can be found here. Interested to know what you think of the adjustments for farms...

Personally I don't mind having to buy multiple copies of certain things (i.e. the basic 72 tiles) in order to get hold of specific expansions every now and again. It's not ideal, but I can put up with it as long as what I want is actually available to me.

I do find it more than a little frustrating though when new expansions are released in a very limited way such as this. I think that HiG do a good job but since they're in control of who's allowed to release what, could they not have stipulated that this special new boxset could only be produced as long as x thousand copies of it were also available online to those not living in Germany and then tipped us off beforehand? I'd certainly feel like my loyalty had been rewarded if this was the case! As it is, my overwhelming feeling is that they're not really considering their international fans in the same way as they do their more local customers.

It sounds like Die Belagerer will probably become available via Cundco at some point but whether we'll have to wait months or even years for this remains to be seen. And what will happen in the meantime is that those who can buy the game will be buying it up and selling it on eBay for increasingly ridiculous prices while there's demand. I'd rather my money was going to HiG than some guy on eBay but I do feel kind of forced into this position at present.

Thanks for your responses guys, I'm glad it's not just me who couldn't quite see why you'd do this.

Next time I play with the Kathars/ Siege tiles I'll try the following:

- incomplete cities which include one of the Siege tiles are worth nothing in the final scoring
- complete cities which include one of the Siege tiles are worth -1 per tile + -1 per pennant but are otherwise scored in the normal way (i.e. by majority of knights in the city)
- cities are scored in the same way as with Kathars/ Sieges for farms (6 points per city or 8 with pig)
- knights can escape from besieged cities if there is a cloister/ cult place anywhere next to any of the city borders (same as Sieges I believe)

Will let you know how it goes!

Official Rules / Why Escape a Besieged City?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the rules but I've never really understood why you'd want to abandon a city just because it's been besieged (and because you have the opportunity to do so if you're lucky enough to place a cloister/ cult place somewhere useful). Obviously it won't be worth quite as many points, but if it's a ten-tile city with a couple of pennants for example it's still going to be worth 12 points or so.

I can see that if you end up with a knight trapped in a city that can't be completed then it may be helpful to get them back by laying siege to the city, but if a city is otherwise completable I can't see why you wouldn't keep playing for the points.

The only way I'd really want to escape from somewhere would be if the points value became negative rather than positive. Imagine that! Your opponent has a huge city worth 40 points, then - bang! - you place a Siege/ Cathars tile and suddenly it's worth -40. Then it becomes a desperate struggle for them to get hold of a cloister and evacuate the city before you can complete it! Is anybody aware of any expansions that would have this effect?

General / Re: Star... meeples at Meeple Source.

I own eight Meeples of each of the following sets: Zombies, Princesses, Astronauts, Ninjas, Pirates (not the new ones), Monkeys, Monsters, Soldiers and Outlaws. I like the idea of collecting all of them but there's only so much you can do with them once you've got them and they're not cheap (especially if you live overseas).

The colour matching is tricky. Some are better than others so the Zombies go well with the green follower set and the Monsters go well with the blue follower set etc. The Princesses however are pink and the Monkeys are brown. I can get the pink and brown follower sets from Cundco to go with these but it seems like a lot of trouble to go to just for the sake of matching colours and the standard-sized Meeples from those sets wouldn't be used. I have no idea how I'd try to match some of the more recent additions to a set of coloured followers as they don't seem to have a single colour theme. You could try to be artistic about it but then you find yourself in the situation whereby you're trying to paint a Caveman builder/ pig/ mayor/ wagon/ barn and you start to wonder where your life went wrong...

The other problem is that because the character Meeples are all mega-Meeple size, you can't easily distinguish between them and the follower that represents the mega-Meeple. This can be solved now that there are the super-mega-Meeples but it's all extra expense.

In summary, I'd say that I really like the extra character Meeples and they do add a bit of fun. They're difficult to include in serious games though so think before you buy!

I like the Cavemen as they look slightly more like me than the Zombies. Surprised they've done pirates again, but the new pirates do look better than the old ones.

Thanks kettlefish. I'm not sure I can justify buying this "for my daughter" just yet as she's only two years old! It's definitely now on my radar though...

Great comparison! What sort of Meeple is that with the huge head?

I really enjoy Traders and Builders too as I think it adds just enough without getting too complicated. You didn't mention how you got on with the Builder or the Pig? Most of my games that include T & B seem to involve everyone getting their builder into play as quickly as possible and then everyone else trying to trap them there! Did you use your Pig to generate the extra points for your major farm?

It's been pretty hot in the UK lately so I'm particularly enjoying playing the winter edition a lot at the moment as it helps me to cool down! :)

Excellent review! I was right on the edge of my seat reading about your experience in the tournament. Gutted you didn't get to go through to the next round but glad you enjoyed it all the same.

Anything Else / Meeple Cufflinks
« on: August 23, 2013, 05:55:27 AM »
I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and a friend of mine showed me these cufflinks (pictured). I was very impressed and immediately wanted to know where he'd got them from.

The bad news is that he'd made them himself, but the good news is that they were quite cheap and extremely easy to make! He had bought 2 Mini Meeples (12mm) from MeepleSource in several different colours and had simply glued them on to the back of some plain cufflink backs that he'd bought from eBay.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else fancied trying the same. They looked really good and the fact that he'd made matching pairs in several different colours meant that he could wear a tie to match!

@kettlefish - it just seemed to happen! we both placed tiles with open city segments around the outside and gradually joined these in to the main city. normally we wouldn't have competed so aggressively to get knights into the city but the gingerbread man brought out the worst in us!

@ckorfmann - actually this game was relatively friendly despite the aggressive competitiveness! not sure why, but it was generally a very friendly game and I think either of us would have enjoyed it just as much regardless of the outcome. being open, honest and as impartial as possible when giving advice definitely helped to keep it fun and friendly.

Thanks for answering my question wicke. It's normally me who has a panic attack every time my wife suggests straying from "the rules" but on this occasion we were both just as happy as each other to come up with our own house rules!
