Christmas Present (2013) print-and-play expansion
« on: November 02, 2022, 01:41:00 PM »
Just when you thought you knew every Carcassonne expansion that had been published, one of your friends (BigBoss ) manages to stumble across this long-forgotten gem from nine years ago!

Christmas Present was released in December 2013 by the Hungarian publisher Piatnik through JEM - Játékos Emberek Magazinja as a print-and-play expansion. Although coinciding with the release of the Winter Edition, the artwork on the 64 cards was drawn from the decidedly non-winter original artwork by Doris Matthäus, though this expansion can work well with any edition.

This expansion is so similar to The Gifts (released 2021) that we suspect it may have served as inspiration. The original Hungarian version contains many more abilities, however, and the cards are divided into two separate decks of 32 cards each. Some cards are resolved immediately upon drawing, while others are saved for the right moment.

It’s unclear whether Piatnik ever produced any physical copies. The BGG entry showed zero owners of this expansion prior to registering my handmade copy. Is this the only physical copy in existence?

Thanks and merits to both LaPorxada (aka Big Boss) for finding this and Scott for printing and translating.  Just looked at the rules.  Wow, the one gift grants double points for the rest of the game.  If gotten early that would be a HUGE advantage.  Anyone else think that card might be a little too powerful??  Anyway, great little find.  Thanks again!
It's all fun and games...until the Mirror Zone comes out.

How did you manage to print the cards and cut them cleanly?

I printed the cards on 110lb cardstock. My colour printer does not automatically duplex, so first I printed one side, then flipped the sheets over to print the other side. The artwork lined up perfectly.

Then it was over to the crafting table where I have a self-healing cutting mat (on extended loan from my mom’s collection of supplies), a metal ruler, utility knife, and corner cutter (recommended to me by MMike ). Line up the ruler with the guide marks and cut away the excess, then divide the cards from each other. Then a marathon session on the corner rounder (3mm radius) to make it look professional.

It took me longer to create the tuckbox. My first attempt was slightly undersized in two dimensions, but once I fixed that it was easy. Cut out the box, use the metal ruler near the edge of the table to make nice clean folds, trim a few pieces deliberately leftover, put a little glue on the flap, and assemble.

Hi BigBoss, have you seen the pdf added to the JEM website?  My language skills (lack of) are hindering my searching.
