The pictures shows a road network with 6 tiles. However a German cathedral and the
Highway scoring tile may alter the way it is scored. Additionally, you can find points modifiers affecting the road:
* An inn
* The German cathedral
...and also some bonuses not affected by the scoring tile:
* Mage
* A bathhouse
* A German castle
The rules for German cathedrals considered the base game and inns, so the feature size modifications introduced by road segments on German cathedrals affect all of them. They are intertwined in a way that the
Highway would affect them all as well.
However, the Mage (or the Wainwrights quarter bonus from The Markets of Leipzig by analogy) only take the base game into consideration as per the rules. So the tile count used by them should be the one considered for the base game alone independently from any alterations introduced by other expansions.
This approach follows the rationale that mini expansions are defined only with the base game in mind, so scoring should be conducted as superimposing layers, where side effects are contained to avoid unwanted conflicts.
Moreover, the concept of independent road segments on a tile introduced by German cathedrals is not extended to other tiles in the base game (for example, a simple road starting and ending at the same village) or other expansions, such as The Tunnel (tunnels connecting several road segments on the same tile) to name one. You may find plenty of tiles with multiple road segments that may even participate in the same road network but, no matter what, they are counted as individual tiles.
So this is the spirit behind keeping potential side effects contained when scoring bonuses, especially when there is no rule or clarification available.
This said, let's address both scenarios to see how they works out.
Scenario 1 : Without The Land SurveyorsThe road has 6 tiles but it ends at two different segments on the German cathedral tile. As a consequence, the length considered for the core feature scoring of road is 7 (5 tiles + 2 road segments on the German cathedral tile). However, the Mage will consider the 6 actual tiles.
* Core feature scoring = (5 tiles + 2 road segments) x (1 point per road tile + 1 point for the German cathedral + 1 point for the inn) = 7 x 3 = 21 points
* Bonus = 13 points (6 points for Mage + 4 points for bathhouse + 3 points for German castle)
- Mage (1 point per actual tile) = 6 tiles x 1 point / tile = 6 points
- Batthouse (no. points indicated on the tile) = 4 points
- German castle (the road ends at it) = 3 points
So
scores 34 points (21 for the road itself + 13 bonus points associated to it)
Scenario 2 : With Highway scoring tileThe road has 6 tiles but it ends at two different segments on the German cathedral tile. As a consequence, the road length is 7 (5 tiles + 2 road segments on the German cathedral tile). No matter the length of the road, the core feature is scored as a 5-tile road due to the
Highway scoring tile. However, the Mage will consider the 6 actual tiles.
* Core feature scoring = (5 tiles for the Highway scoring tile) x (1 point per road tile + 1 point for the German cathedral + 1 point for the inn) = 5 x 3 = 15 points
So
scores 28 points (15 for the road itself + 13 bonus points associated to it)
