Title: Expansion combinations
Post by: theaeblackthorn on July 10, 2017, 09:47:16 AM
So, firstly please forgive me if this is the wrong place, or there is already a thread for this -- I couldn't find it!

I've got most Carcassonne mechanics (bar Festival, Tunnels, Russian Tiles and... ofc Siege/etc) and I often find myself caught when I'm setting up a game as to what to include.

If anyone plays Dominion as well there are like, 'types of games' and you can combine certain elements from different expansions to create different types of games and people name these different combinations.

I wondered if there was anything similiar for Carcassonne, like, for a super confrontational game take: The large meep, the tower, etc etc.

For shed loads of luck introduce: the fliers, the wheel of fortune, etc.

Or even, for a watery game: both rivers, the ferries, inns and cathedrals.

Is this a thing? Is there anywhere I could look these up? If not, do people have any that they tend to play?

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum theaeblackthorn.

Great idea, I'm aware of some cards which describe expansions and help in the selection process, but I don't think we've got anything that measures each expansion in terms of:

complexity/meanness/number of tiles..perhaps there are some other metrics which could be used.

It is now! "I feel like a watery game of Carcassonne today - how about you?"

I'm always up for a game of amazonas  or south seas for that matter. Plenty of water there!

And I'm probably the one using the most differents expansions and spin-off games together to play the game  :black1-meeple:

So we have the fantasy game with princes and dragon, and mage and witch.

The society game with traders and builders and abbey and mayor

The medieval game with the towers and catapult

The water game with inns and cathedrals,  rivers, ferries.

The ecclesiastical game with lots of different monasteries.

Any other ideas?

Haha, thank you for the warm welcome!

I wonder if there's something with:

Above and below? The tunnels, the gold miners, the hills and the tower?

Oooh, this would be vicious!

Cutthroat Carcassonne: The Robbers, The Besiegers, The Tower, The Heretics

What about a Newbie friendly, so more luck and things that let people remove meeples?

Basegame, and the festival? Nothing else? What else would make it more newbie friendly?

That basically IS the newbie version. It has been released twice now, once in the old art (10th Anniversary Edition) and once in the new art (15th Anniversary Edition). Granted, the latter includes The River as well, but that expansion is definitely optional.

I'd recommend a phantom for newbies too - an extra meeple never hurt.

That's true! What about the builder? Is that newbie friendly or do extra rules just hurt?

The extra rules don't hurt, tactically it's quite advanced though.  I can see some newbies being disheartened when their builder is trapped in a city while their opponent gets dozens and dozens of extra goes!

Oh, you're very right -- I wonder how the game feels if you take out farmers, have you ever played? Would that make it friendlier?

I've moved the discussion of Farmers over to here (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3469.msg51224;boardseen#new). Let's stick to the original topic for this thread.
