Is the castle tile kept secret by the players until it is placed?

Yes, you should keep it in your supply unseen to your opponents, the same as any Halflings you may have.

No, you should keep it in your supply but visible to your opponents, as opposed to any Halflings you may have.

EDIT: Updated mistaken answer. See post here:

We can have secret tiles? -  :pink-meeple:

I thought each player selects a double-sized tile at the beginning of the game. Does that imply we should all know who gets what and you just cannot ask to view the tile once it's taken? Or is it that a faced-down tile is randomly distributed to each player?

Exactly, I am looking for some sage wisdom from the more experienced village elders -  :pink-meeple:

I've been reviewing the setup rules for German castles and Halfings just to be certain about this point and I came across this surprising conclusion (at least to me):

German castles remain face up in front of the players while Halflings -even if distributed face up- remain face down for the reast of the game.

Regarding the German castle rules, the C2 German rules mention this point explicitly ("Then everyone places their castles face up in front of them"), although the C1 rules and the English rules (C1 and C2) only state that players place the castles in front of them. In hindsight, this means that the tiles remain face up because there is no explicit wording to keep them face down. OK. ???

can we sneak a peak to determine which halfling to play? Or if we play a halfling, is it as much a surprise to the active player as everyone else? Unless of course, that people has a photographic and can remember what halfling was dealt to them and where it was placed, with the assumption that it was dealt face up. -  :pink-meeple:

You can take peek at your Halflings as required... But the other players shouldn't be able to see them again after the setup...  ;)

concerning castles, in front of you does not mean face visible

Yep, that was my interpretation of the rules after Halflings, but the C2 German rules make it clear: the German castle tiles are meant to be placed face up, that is, visible.

I find it absurd, the other players place their tiles according to the castles they visualize

It seems odd to me too.

If your tile us face up, it is a warning for everyone to make things difficult for you. But you will not waste much time blocking the placement of your opponents' castles. Too much work I think.

I use your tile holders to keep the castles secret  ;)
