You can find Gold Mine, The Cave and Saboteurs on BGG
There are a lot of Saboteur games
Thanks!

Another interesting game is Venice Connection

Oh, this looks great for me!  Not available?  Maybe I'll just make a version from blank tiles...  Thanks again.

Tantrix
Thanks!  I have this and enjoy it, thought mostly as a motivation to think about math and topology.  I got so obsessed with hexagonal colored connection tiles a year or so ago that I bought the game Kaliko.  I like that game as a mathy puzzle sort of thing, but have only played a couple of times.

Cascadia, unlike Carcassonne, you place the tiles to form your own region.
I had heard of this and think it looks beautiful.  Some reviews on BGG make me a little hesitant to buy...

Isle of Cats, but it is harder than Carcassonne.
Oh, I had not heard of this and it looks like a great match for me!  Over the past 10 years or so, my dad and I tried to find all 2339 solutions of the 6x10 Pentomino Puzzle.  We got something like 1750 of them!  See photos here.  So, I think this game would be intrinsically appealing for me.  Also, my family loves cats.  Thanks!

We really enjoy Castles of Mad King Ludwig.
Looks interesting.

I also recommend Isle of Skye Chieftain to King.  There is a Big Box out now that excludes the worst expansion, but has all the good content.
Oh, I had heard of this one, but didn't know about the Big Box.  Adding this to the list!  Thanks!

I enjoy Cacao (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/171499/cacao)
Expansions are interesting too.
This looks very cool and highly rated.  Also out of print and surprisingly expensive on eBay.  Possible birthday present.  Thanks!

Pocketgames like Sprawlopolis, Agropolis and Naturopolis (and expansions)
Oh perfect!  I ordered a copy of Sprawlopolis.  This sounds great.  I think solo games might be the right path for me...Thanks!

I couldn't find this / these -- area they expansions?

Has anyone played Between Two Cities?  Discovered this while browsing some of the other suggestions on BGG.

I am interested in other tile-laying games and want help from anyone who is interested.  First a bit of background....

I found this great thread with a lengthy index of tile-laying games:
https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2301.0

In fact, it was the last post in this thread that led me to Land vs. Sea:
https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6008

And from there to Fjords:
https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6013

And then to double-sided Carcassonne and double-sided Fjords:
https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6021

I am in the process of making double-sided variants of Tsuro and Days of Steam, though I was also persuaded by @danisthirty (Tsuro Review) to give the official version of Tsuro another try, and did enjoy it.

I prefer tile-laying games where there is no board, and a minimum of extra "equipment".  Land vs. Sea can be played with nothing but the tiles, for example!  Tsuro has only a single dragon marker per player.  Fjords has only 2 types of wood bits, and they are placed in distinct phases of play.  Days of Steam has a bit more complexity, and is my least favorite (it seems to have a dead Forum on BGG, and having only just bought a copy, I think I see why).

I prefer the randomness of the game to come only from the tile drawing.  And I like a lot of player interaction, not "simultaneous solitaire" (though I think this aptly describes Chinese Mahjong, which I do very much enjoy).  And I prefer each turn to present a reasonable number of choices, with clear risks and rewards and some tactics, but with enough randomness and complexity that it won't be useful to over-think things, so you can make a decision in a few seconds most of the time.  (As you can tell from all of this, Carcassonne is by far my favorite game!)

So...what tile-laying game should I try next?  I would be especially interested in games that meet most of my preferences but perhaps have a hand of tiles, because I think games like this are candidates to be improved by eliminating the hand of tiles and making the tiles double-sided!   >:D

Thanks in advance to anyone with suggestions.

…we tried out a new way to manage baazars in 2-players game…
This is great.  Simple and fun.  Could it work in a multi-player game if every player drew a tile, and then you just go around, with each player able to play the tile they got or swap with the player who comes next, unless that player pays 4 points to keep their tile?  Maybe if a player pays, the next player would have to swap or pay?  Anyway I like it.

Here it is:
Great landscape!  No farmers?  Seems like a sensible choice with the crazy bridges—otherwise, the 10-city farm dominates the whole game.

Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks for the merit.   :)

Here's a small landscape from a recent 37-tile game using travel-sized tiles and 5 meeples per team.  Parents (Red) versus kids (Blue), alternating turns with no intra-team communication allowed.  Parents got lucky draws to complete the 12-point city on the right and kids failed to get any FFxx tile to join the farmer at the top into the huge field, until the turn after I placed the savage blocking RRFF tile.  We won by only a couple points!

the genuineness was lost forever the very moment they added a ringmaster in a top hat…
I don’t think there have been active volcanos in Languedoc for quite a while, either…

Two hills would require two other tiles to be placed underneath them so it wouldn't be 13 turns per player anymore  ;)  :D
Good Catch!  3 Hills!  And a 4th set of meeples, too!  >:D

I would like an edition with hundreds of tiles.
I would go the other way: Carc für 3, a 40-tile (start tile plus 13 turns per player) travel-tile-size game in a miniature travel bag with scoreboard.  Regular road tile count is reduced to make room for three Inns, two Fliers, two Hills, two Ferries.  Pennants in cities are replaced by a special but subtle “40” banner that scores like trade goods.  Players each get 1 bridge and 6 regular meeples (5 in play plus one to score).

Alternatively, release base game and all expansions in travel-tile size.  Maybe as a “little big box”?

@Challa007, love both of the C1 custom tile landscapes!  Expansion 11 looks crazy.

@wolnic, Beautiful generalization of circular river town!

Thanks for sharing!

Inspired by the I Love the Postman thread, I thought it would be fun to start a thread for posting end-of-game photo(s).  Add whatever details you want, or just the photo(s).  No game is too big or too small--all Carcassonne Landscapes are beautiful!  Also feel free to add photos of the players if you have them--all Carcassonne players are beautiful, too!

I'll start with tonight's game against my daughter using my Updated Double-Sided Tiles.  Here is the landscape just before and after final scoring.  She (Gray) won over me (Yellow): 199-172.

Great tiles!  The images all seem to imply relaxation, so here is a rules proposal:

When a special tile is drawn, it is placed as usual.  But no meeple may be placed on the tile.  In fact, no meeple may be placed by any following player on their next turn, so the next occasion when a meeple could be placed will be on the next turn of the player who originally drew the special tile.  (You could prohibit all "move wood" actions and even the dragon would not move!)

This might be too many idle turns?  (Actually, maybe I'll try this as a house rule for any FFFF tiles with no cloister.)

Anyway, have fun.  Would love to see a photo of a final landscape where all these tiles were in play!

Official Rules / Re: Can bridges be placed towards abbeys?

It is an artificial intelligence programmed to interact in a conversational way.  You can try it at openai.com.  It can answer simple factual questions, make up short stories, write some computer code.  Sometimes it is very impressive, but sometimes it is very foolish.

I asked ChatGPT: Tell me about an exciting ending to a game of carcassonne

Here is the answer:
Quote
In this game, there are three players: Red, Blue, and Green. The board is nearly filled with tiles, and the players have only a few meeples left. Red and Blue are in the lead, with Green trailing behind. The tension is high as the players carefully consider each move.

On Red's turn, they draw a tile that allows them to complete a long road that stretches across the board. They place the tile and claim the road with their last remaining meeple, securing a significant number of points. Blue is now in a tough spot, as they need to make a big move to catch up.

Blue draws a tile that allows them to connect a city to a monastery, which gives them a chance to score big points. They place the tile and use their last meeple to claim the city. They are now tied with Red in points, but it's still anyone's game.

Green draws the final tile of the game, and everyone holds their breath as they wait to see what it is. It's a tile that could potentially help Green catch up to the other players, but they don't have any meeples left to claim it. Instead, they decide to use the tile to block Red from expanding their road, hoping to prevent them from scoring any more points.

The players count up their points, and it's a close race. In the end, Blue and Red are tied for first place, each with 87 points. Green comes in third with 72 points. The game ends with a thrilling finish, as the players strategized to the very end and fought for every point.

So, it somehow knows the elements of the game, but here is pretty obviously just combining bits and pieces of online information.  The result is not convincing to anyone who knows the game, but might seem convincing to a lot of people who had never played.

ChatGPT makes up some parts of its reponses, and cannot be reliable.
Right.  It never says “I don’t know.”  Like it wants to be a professor.

Quote
A bridge cannot be placed on an abbey since it has no field edges.
I never thought of this, but it could be a fun house rule!  If you want to close a city and/or divide a field, but you also want to connect to a valuable road?!

Custom bridges are fun!!! Aren't they? >:D
I love the double-length bridge.  Has anyone tried to make a Ferry-like swiveling bridge?!  Or a stone bridge that can collapse and be rebuilt under certain conditions?

Strategy Guide / Re: Tactical Tips for Ferries?
« on: February 24, 2023, 07:16:36 AM »
Another game with my wife.  Much more exciting.  I (Blue) used a Ferry (top left of photo below) to end a 5-tile Inn road my wife had made, with the intention of reopening it later.  But then she extended my road with the FRRR tile from A&M, which meant I would have a hard time completing the road from that dock.  Fortunately, I connected it the other dock to a road that already had my thief on it, and then a miracle happened: I got another ferry, allowing me to close the now 9-tile Inn road and set up to open-and-close it again as a 10-tile road.  I began celebrating that I would score a total of 38 points!  Here is a photo of the joyous moment:

But then tragedy!  My wife's next tile was a road ending! She pulled the defensive maneuver of playing it on the unoccupied open dock of my ferry, and then switching the ferry to permanently close the 10-tile Inn road with nobody on it!   >:D

Ferries are so great!  And not just because I managed to hold on to win 43-36.  ::)  Here is the final landscape:

I have been working on another "tactical summary" post, but even single-Ferry tactics get quite complex quickly...

Hope to post over the weekend...
