Other Games / New York 1901
« on: March 01, 2016, 04:51:52 AM »
New York 1901 is another game my family loves.  The rules are very simple and the setup is very easy.  You can spend your turn increasing your real estate to build massive structures or prevent your opponent from doing so.

Pros:
  • Nice components and building artwork
  • Fun easy gameplay
  • Sim City feel
  • Building placement has a sort of Tetris feel
  • Fun to decide what buildings to keep and which to demolish
  • Family won't need to play Monopoly ever again
Cons:
  • New York is the theme of too many games
  • Not enough street value cards to give enough variety
  • Small original ticket to ride sized cards
  • There was a small expansion, but it sold out within hours and Ebay resellers want way too much for it.

Since I can't find the original artwork expansion anywhere, I have played around with this a lot in JCZ.  No matter how hard I have tried, the computer opponents will not let me complete a Cathedral City.  I started to add them to opponent cities and that seems to be the way to go (at least in JCZ).

I absolutely hated Camel Up the first time I played it.   I couldn't believe it beat Splendor for the Spiel des Jahres.  My son loved it and asked for it for his birthday.  After a few plays, I started enjoying it too.  It is ridiculous, but it can be a lot of fun if you let yourself get into it.  At the very least, the more you play it, the less you will hate it.

I played with this a little bit on JCZ.  It isn't a bad expansion, just not a particularly interesting one.   I don't absolutely have to have it, but if I can get it cheap or I have room in a cundco order, I may throw it in.

I originally thought you got the extra points if you put the tile in the correct quadrant AND the compass directions matched that of the blue rose.  I think I like the compass directions matching the start tile (or blue tile) for bonus points more than the quadrant rule.

My son is 7 and he plays very well for his age.  He usually beats his mother and he never runs out of meeple.  The 2 areas he really needs to improve upon are farms and the barn.  He doesn't like farms because they tie up his meeple.  He never plays farms until there is only a small stack (a dozen or so) of tiles left.  There have been a few games where he has a 20 point lead going into the end only to see farms add 30 or more points our scrores.

The one thing he is really good at is trapping other people's meeples.  The other night he used his Abbey early in the game to limit one of my farmers and prevent me from potentially having a great place to put a barn.  I always use the Abbey to complete my features, I never thought to use it to trap anything.   :(y)

The replacement  tiles were ,20 Euro when I bought them.  After converting to US dollars, they were ~25 cents.  Unless I bought the wrong thing.

OK. So I wasn't gonna reveal this until April month but if you can hold on little over a month, I will be offering part of my collection and may be able to sell off loose tiles. I've got plenty of Cathedral spares from Inns'n'Cathedrals.
I won't charge much, but gonna calculate what I invested and try to get some of it back.

I'll be interested.

Other Games / Ticket to Ride UK and PA
« on: February 26, 2016, 12:51:09 PM »
Ticket to Ride is probably the game we play the most.  We have the USA, Europe, India + Switzerland, and now the UK and Pennsylvania map.

I have to say this expansion is both awesome and terrible.

The UK map has a technology aspect of it that makes the locomotives too important.  In most ticket to ride games, people pull cards from the visible choices.  That never happens in UK because everyone is pulling from the deck hoping for more locomotives.  Also, the technologies just weight the game down.  It is really no fun IMHO.  That being said, the map is BEAUTIFUL.  It is almost as pretty as India.

The Pennsylvania map is UGLY.  They forgot the legend and forgot to put in a card for the person who scored the most tickets.  The stock gimmick in this map is FANTASTIC.  My son's strategy is to forgo destinations and go after stocks.  My wife goes after a ton of destination and doesn't concentrate on stocks too much.  I am somewhere in between.  All 3 of us have won at different times with very different strategies.   We play this one the most with India being our second favorite.

Anyone else give it a go?

My family loves this game.  We bought the Delorean, but it hasn't arrived yet.  We may pick up the stagecoach if it ever goes on sale.

We play with the following House Rules.
1. Only a child or a first time player can be Ghost.  His ability is the best.
2. Belle's ability doesn't work on Cheyenne

On some forums it is frowned upon to bring an old topic back from the dead.  In others it is encouraged, so I am new and sorry if I chose poorly.

Anyway, do you think CUNDCO.DE would let me buy 2 Cathedral squares?  I was thinking of getting the cool double-tile castles and maybe Die Schule or Das Fest.  The halflings are another option, but I don't know if I like the looks or even the idea of those.

The website has this warning in German.  I don't speak German, but it looks like a warning about building an expansion through tile replacement and I don't want the whole expansion, just the Cathedrals.  That probably makes me a bad guy.

I wouldn't say the game plays itself, but the strategy is obvious.  Yes you are mostly putting opponent cats in the blender and your cats in the box, but you have to decide when it's a worthwhile play to sacrifice your own cats or save them.  With 4 players, you really don't have much control. Like Exploding Kittens, it is a quick filler game.  Nothing more.

The dice tower guys love Jamaica and for me that game plays itself.  Basically you roll dice and get 3 cards.  Depending on the dice and your cards, the choice is obvious.

We have this and Kittens in a Blender.  Both are ok, but I prefer Kittens in a Blender.

My wife and I love this game.  We played a demo at the boardgame store and bought it immediately. She wants to get the Chocolat expansions, but it doesn't really look worthwhile to me.  The volcano expansion looks ok, but not $10 for 3 tiles.

I don't think Carc 2.0 is marketed at the big money players though. We've already bought everything, so they don't get any money from us until they release new stuff for us to buy. By giving the basic game an overhaul they can broaden their appeal to newer gamers who might feel that classic Carc looks a little dated after 16 years. I don't necessarily agree with this, but I think it makes sense financially, and based on what I've seen from a new generation of Carcassonne players on Twitter and Facebook, most of them are thrilled to bits with their latest purchase and are enjoying the artwork.

I wonder how many folks only bought the new game because of the new art.  I can't imagine the original artwork precluding someone from purchasing the original game.  I am way late to the party and ended up with the old artwork not knowing there was new artwork.  I probably would have been just as happy if I received the new artwork instead.  Until I saw the old artwork of course :P

In the end it was a business decision and you are correct that they have alreasy made money from all of you.
