Title: Abbot and Tower
Post by: rfielder on October 08, 2014, 06:08:48 PM
Can a tower capture an abbot?

In JCloisterZone, it can not.  In fact, the game hung on us tonight because of this....

I can't find anything in the Complete Annotated Rules to indicate that a tower can, or can not, capture an abbot.

Did a search here, and didn't find any other discussions about the interactions between towers and abbots.

Help!

Can a tower capture an abbot?

My answer would be - yes, since it is a follower after all. CAR is not updated yet to include "Abbot" expansion.

OK, I admit I mixed up two things. But first part is still in effect.

I don't see why an Abbot on a german monastery could not be captured by a tower or be eaten by a dragon, he is a monk too, I think. The Abbot lies like a farmer and should stay until final scoring, but a farmer also can be captured.

I would agree, but JCloisterZone V3 will not allow a tower to capture an abbot.  It does allow the dragon to eat an abbot.  Usually Farin is very very good about understanding and implementing rules, so I thought maybe this was not allowed.....

To clarify, per an earlier message, I am referring to the side ways meeple on a German monastery.

Abbot?

What is an abbot?  :o Is it the meeple who is not a monk, but the other thing, when you use the Monasteries?  ???

Please see the CAR, page 173, for a far better explanation than I could provide, as well as the rules for use of Monk, Abbots, etc.

It is indeed the 'other' thing

Does anyone have a definitive answer to the question about Towers capturing Abbot?

kettlefish - can you assist?

If the answer is Yes, a Tower may capture an Abbot, we need Farin to fix JCloisterZone.

If the answer is No, the CAR needs to be updated.

Thanks!

Rule Tower (CAR v7.02 - page 65):
Quote
Whenever a player places a tower piece, he or she may take one big or normal follower prisoner.

Rule German Monastery (CAR v7.02 - page 173):
Quote
He then has two options when deploying a follower on the cloister:
1. As a Monk
2. As an Abbot

The follower has many different roles at Carcassonne.
examples: The follower is acting as a:
(CAR v7.02 - page 12)
- knight in a city
- thief on a road
- monk on a cloister
- farmer on a field

A follower  is still a follower when it has the role as an "abbot" stand on its' side on a "German Monastery".

Here you can find some more roles of a follower:
(CAR v7.02 - page 272)
Gefolgsmann - follower

kettlefish - thank you!

To paraphrase kettlefish:
- an Abbot is a follower
- a tower can take a follower

In other words - JCloisterZone needs a change!
