I contacted Cundco about the ghosts, abbots and spell circles, and I received the following clarifications on July 10th 2024...

[Q1] Do watchtowers in C3 separate the fields in the same way as their predecessors in C2. In C3, the towers are thinner but they have some bushes next to their bases that should split the field to provide the same effect. Is this correct? Is there any exception?

[A1] There is an intentional change because the previous watchtowers separate the fields too much. The fields are different on 4 tiles now (as marked above), since the bushes next to the watchtowers do not separate fields.

The bushes next to the watchtowers are just a decoration. So these are the changes affecting fields on the highligted tiles:
* A --> 2 fields in C3 (previously 3 fields in C2 - one of them was a tiny triangle)
* B --> 1 field in C3 (previously 3 fields in C2)
* C --> 1 field in C3 (previously 2 fields in C2)
* D --> 1 field in C3 (previously 2 fields in C2)

Interesting!

I wonder on what feedback the intentional change was based? Did anyone here find that the original Watchtowers separated fields too much? Or is it really just an after the fact justification for a side effect of revising the art?

Mostly I'm curious why - if it really was intentional to adjust gameplay - this particular expansion has been singled out for adjustment!

I think that Anne Pätzke was more guided by the mechanics (watchtowers are bulky so you can se the symbols clearly) and Marcel Gröber leans more towards the graphic side (watchtowers are thinner and closer to the city proportions), and clarity is sometimes left in the rear seat. We've seen highwaymen moving from behind their bushes to under a fruit-bearing tree in C3, or those fields separated by a flag pole in The Bets.

Marcel told me that he was very fond of his work on The Seasons. My reading on this is that he could let his creativity run free with this series, not so tied by the restictions of a conversion from C2. We'll have to wait and see the other three installments of this series.

Uff, if Spring from 4 seasons are fine, I couldn't imagine the mess which brings other 3 seasons.

So Marcel has already finished the artwork for the other 3 expansions?

This is my understanding. Moritz is the one deciding when and where any of the stuff is released. It can be stored in the warehouse for years until he decides to market it, as in the case of WE3 in Germany.
