I realise there may not be many out there who have played this yet, or who have come across this situation, but it's good to know DrMeeple may be in a position to consider this. I shall await a response.
Thanks for the prompt reply. It's what we thought. Placing the second tile might score the points now if that player could see that an opponent was ready to steal the grassland later.
That second pit tile immediately resolves a local grassland scoring (8 surrounding tiles), and you cover the animals with tokens so they aren't scored later
