rfielder vs. Hounk 204:217

Another tight game, this time luck finally was in favour of me. The two big cities in NW both were abandoned on times thanks to the cloister, when both of us needed reinforcement for the two big farms. The big, finished cathedral city was fiercly fight for and in the end finished by rfielder in a tied state, since he needed the meeples back more desperately then me at that moment. This flushed us both with more options to score last third of the game, as we had been quite short on meeples at that moment. Game was open until the last tile and I got lucky to get as the last tile the CRFR, with which rfielder would have joint his phantom to the 21 point farm, if he would have got it.

Yes, this was your last tile. However, after I did not use my one but last tile to "secure" the big farm, but rather for another 12 point farm, I got at least a fitting last tile to tie on the farm again. Hence the close result, tense game.

glh510 and I are now in chat. So maybe, you could do matches with both of us? (We've already played our game some time ago.)

Scoring in Carcassonne always includes, that you get the meeple back. (Even in end game scoring, although in this case just for clarity, which features have already been scored.)

If "game basics" mean rules, then yes absolutely. I'd say, rules complexity lies somewhere in between "Carcassonne" and "Castles of Burgundy", not in the range of other "heavy" games like "Great Western Trail". But to play it good is tricky, at least for me. In fact, I've quite often lost against first time players, with several games of experience, which is quite unusual in a "no luck game", but also indication, that it can be picked up pretty fast. I most time was able to see my failure a turns in advance, and even able to name, what I did wrong. In which case it was always something different! Often a butterfly will raise a hurricane in this game. But for me, it is tremendous fun to play, even if I suck at it.

Thanks @ JB for the "hijack", these pictures are awesome!

For me it was tricky to plan ii Advent in advance, so I just checked, whenever I had time and was seldom lucky to find somebody from my group. I will have pretty much time today, though. During the day, in the evening and also at night, so maybe we'll get some game today.

@ Jungleboy: I envy you for your trip to the real monument, nice picture!

@ franks: GWT is really a great game, though a bit hard to learn. Don't be discouraged by this and be prepared with the rules, before you introduce them to the other player(s). I'd also suggest playing first only a two player game, as it will be slower and longer as once you're familiar with it, anyway. Mysterium I've only played with a couple, him being the ghost. So only 3 players, and at that count it seemed rather easy to us. We also took our time in the final round to discuss the clues, until we were both confident, that they should be right. Because the hourglass restriction is only in the first part of the game, there seemed to be no pressure in the second part to not do so.

Not sure, how this list is meant, but here are the games new to me in 2017, which impressed me the most:

10) Mysterium
Kind of a coop version of Dixit. Only played it twice to date, and am not sure, if it won't be too easy on the long run. (We won both games, though the other two had been more experienced. But I'm still OK, putting it on the tenth spot at least, as it was very enjoyable.

9) Pandemic
Yes, I played it this year for the first time, and it is considered a "gateway classic" well deserved, in my opinion more deserved then TtR.

8) London (Second Edition)
Surprisingly light and easy to learn for a Martin Wallace game. It has his trade marks, loans and wonky exceptions to the rule. Though the later only feature four so called "Action Cards", which have to be treated slightly different then all the other cards in a deck of 101. Still the game can be taught in about 10 to 15 minutes, and it is a very fun tableau and engine builder in the vein of games like St. Petersburg.

7) Unlock (Series)
6) Exit (Series)

I put the Exit games above the Unlock, but only slightly. I think the puzzles are more creative, and while Unlock has a more "thematic" feel, it also bothers a bit more, if a puzzle is designed oddly unthematic, like the "broken record" one from the last game. (I solved this one in our group, but it took me some time to overcome the doubt, expressing my idea, because it just felt so awkward.) Kudos for the design however, which initially splits up the group in that one. This was very well done.

5) Antiquity
One of my "heaviest" game, quite a time investment, at least in the first games. Not because the rules are so complicated, that you have to refere to them all the times. (They are not!) But you have to achieve a special win condition, rather then play a certain amount of turns or until a VP threshold. And this will require more turns the inexperienced player then one with a few games into. But it is a delicious civilisation building game, with several interesting twists. Though it is rightfully called "multiplayer solitaire", I found it astonishingly entertaining. Got it only this autumn, and already played it several times. Might have been even higher on my list, if it would have been reprinted earlier, but I doubt, as high as my Nr. 1, which is from the same designers.

4) KLASK
Very fun and fast 2 player dexterity game.

3) Codenames
Another game, I'm late to the party. Awesome, "Spiel des Jahres 2016".

2) Great Western Trail
Another heavy game, and this one has arguably a steep learning curve, with a rule book, you have to invest some time into. Once you are used to the iconography though, then game is quite easy to understand and offers plenty of fun. It combines deck building with "action rondel building" and plenty of other stuff to the side.

1) The Great Zimbabwe
I already introduced the forum to this game in another thread, and am still amazed by this beautiful design. Such a simple structure of rules, which offer so many options to the player. I doubt, I will ever get tiered of it.

OK, considering the thickness, these are rather cards, but this is a quite hilarious abstract speed game. You have to either get behind your opponents tiles or to the edge of the table facing him. Since it is a speed game, tiles are not placed in turns, but as fast as you can. You normally have a hand of three, of which you can any amount either discard or place, as long as the placement rules are obeyed of course. But you have to discard all remaining cards in your hand to draw three new ones.

The placement rules require you to match the colour dots horizontally and shapes vertically, like shown on the picture. You are further not allowed to continue your track away from the opponent. (Otherwise it would be too easy to win by reaching the edge of the table.)

Games are really fast paced and hectic, and in some way this reminds me of the light cycle duels from Tron.

I just played a game vs. Adda ('cause SteveAllen claimed, she had improved), and found a pretty grave scoring bug (in particular for 3+ player games), which is definitely new in this version: tied trade good majorities don't score points any more. See the picture below:

The huge city on the left was a draw to my favour as i used the last but one tile
Not sure, what you mean by that, because the one but last tile was placed by me? Of course by far not enough to turn the table, but the best I could do in this situation, not only scoring 6 points from farming the big city and 3 from another one, also removing 5 points from your final score by leaving you with an unfinished but besieged city.

True, I did finish the tied city, which could have been considered loosing a turn. But it gave me additionally 4 points from a short road with inn, and I was in bigger need of getting my meeples back at that point in the game, so it was worthwhile for me then. Still, it was a game, where I had been all the time in defence and running behind, while you scored some nice features yourself and sneaked in everything from me quite easily, so the game looked quite to your favour from early on. You had quite obviously been the better player, so no arguing about that.

After that Hounk connected accidentally the big farm with one of my small farms. With 6 tiles left I was think to make the farm equal again.
It was actually not even accidentially. I just felt too save with only 6 tiles left, that you would not get another farmer onto the farm and connected to neglect you the 6 points. It was an oversight, that you actually have another option to place a meeple and connect. But a well deserved victory for you it was regardless.
