Title: Carcassonne Spin-Off - Around the World #3
Post by: MrNumbers on June 27, 2016, 10:49:56 PM
On German website there is already information about newcoming spin-off - Carcassonne Amazonas (http://www.buecher.de/shop/schmidt-spiele/carcassonne-amazonas-spiel/spielwaren/products_products/detail/prod_id/45216985/).
I doubt the displayed date of release (26. September 2016), because it should be published olny on Spiel'2016 (13.10.2016).

This spin-off will be first presented at the modell-hobby-spiel in Leipzig - around 2 weeks before Spiel'16 in Essen.

I like Gold Rush, because you can "steal" the gold nuggets from the gold mine of the other player.

Amazonas - there will be 2 different figures in that game.
Like the name of the Spin-off said - there is a river...

Any clues on the English Title?

I'd hate to see another Sticks and Stones / Hills and Dales

Carcassonne: Amazonia?
Carcassonne in the Amazon?
Carcassonne: Amazon Adventure?
Carcazonia?

I see a tile with "4/5" on it, which probably means there are tile(s) that will only be used with certain number of players. Interesting.

Also, wondering if there will be a mini expansion/promo, like with South Seas and Gold Rush.

There  is a mini expansion from Cundco. It is called 'The Watchtowers'I think this is for Carcassonne rather than Amazonas...but there are no specifics yet.  No other clues before Septemeber when the Spiel price guide is released

Yeah, I know about the Watchtowers, but don't think it is for Amazones. I'm guessing it's for New Art Base Game, but who knows... :blue-meeple:

I think the placement of the yellow hut is not correct (see the picture at BGG (https://boardgamegeek.com/image/3146954/carcassonne-amazonas)).

We've not seen the rules yet, so we've got nothing to check against.

Yes Decar,
but it is a surprise that the yellow and the red hut are placed on different features. I assume that one of them isn't onto the right place.

I've looked into the rules for the other spin-off games like Hunters&Gatherers, Over Hills&Dales and Goldrush. The huts, tents and stables are placed on only one feature in these games.

Interesting. So the yellow hut is wrong, not the red hut?

It's not clear if jungles are scored or act like USUS where the hut scores animals perhaps.

An image for the Carcassonne Amazonas was posted on Twitter here (https://twitter.com/sebastianwenzel/status/768330766128390145)

Is this what the (partial of) the box will look like?

Lol. Forced me to read all the post again. But finally got to the bgg.com site from one of them. :D

The tiles looks like the result of mixing Hunters and Gatherers with Cacao. :)

If you look carefully to the picture of the tiles you will see that - beginning from the left - there are two rows with 4 "tiles" of the Amazonas-river which have blue dividers. I think these 8 tiles are a unique starting tableau.
On one of the "tiles" is a 4-5 and a person-symbol. In my opinion the Amazonas is the scoring track (but without numbers), and if you are 4 or 5 players the ships start at the 3rd "tile". So this looks rather like a racing track: If one ship is at the end of the Amazonas the game is over. I wonder how the ships are moved.

The ships are all on the Amazonas, no one is on one of the smaller rivers. Instead there are yellow icons with a small boat, on one of them is a blue Meeple. I think you use these boat-icons to claim the small rivers.

Notice also the tile with the green boat. This appears to be a double tile (1x2).

Maybe that's what this is for? So there will not be any clashing with the rules. At least not for the known ones. :D

The tile backs look nice!

Here's a very quick overview of the rules:

Game contains:

65 Landcape-tiles with:  Villages, Tributary features - Animal Symbols, Boat Symbols & Fruit Symbols.
15 Amazon-tiles with : Caiman and Piranhas symbols.

A Start Tile (8 tiles for 4/5players, 16 tiles for 2/3 not pictured assuming the reverse).
4 Double Amazon Tiles
An Estuary tile used to score the river race winners at the end of the game.

Players have a boat; 4 meeple (+1 to score) and 2 camps

The 80 land/amazon tiles are mixed together.

On a turn you: play a tile, play a meeple or a camp, or move your boat along the amazon 1 space; score points.

Tiles played cannot be in front of the mouth of the amazon-river.  Spaces become available as the river moves forward.

Usual tile laying rules; usual meeple laying rules.

Boat Symbols on tributaries move the boat immediately, when your meeple is added to the feature or when new tiles with boat symbols are added.
If you lay a tile and don't place a meeple you can move the boat one square (example on p5 moves the boat 3 spaces).

If you draw an amazon tile with a '!' you must choose a Double amazon-tile to play; there are 3 '!' in the game (but 4 double tiles).   You can only put a meeple or camp on the double tile or move the boat when this event happens.

Point Scoring:

1-point per tributary +1 for any fruit.  // Same at end game
2-points per village +1 for any fruit.   // 1 point per village +1 for fruit at end game
Camps score 1 point per animal in jungle.
River: point allocated according to Estuary -tile  eg:  {7,4,1} or {6,3}
There are some special rules about 2/3 players games, Something about 2nd place only scores points if it is directly behind the leader.  Then the Red boat scores 3 even though it's in front; I've missed something here.

Amazon Scoring Trigger: {not sure what the trigger is}
Boat in the lead gets 1 point per Caiman +1 per Piranha
Other boats her: 1 point per Piranha
Other person gets no points, but their boat is moved forward 1 space.

Looks very face paced - I also had no idea what a Caiman was until I looked it up.

It is definitely a fun game, since it combines the "standard" scoring plus the extra point, if you don't use the meeples or huts, so it is a little tactical element in it.

Seems like they dont have a clue either!

Kettlefish, can you help explain when Ciamen and pirhana are scored?  When does the amazon river trigger?
Title: Re: Carcassonne Spin-Off - Around the World #3
Post by: kettlefish on October 01, 2016, 08:56:42 PM
Scoring the animals in the big Amazonas River - take place after placement of the Amazonas tiles.

the owner of the boad which is the first on the Amazonas gets points for the caiman and the piranhas. The owner of the boad behind the first one  - so the second boad gets points for the Piranhas. The other owners get no points for their boats because the boats are behind the 1st and 2nd boad, but these owner can move their boats one step forward on the Amazonas river.

see page 6 of the rule book - "3.Eine Amazonas-Wertung auslösen" (3. Trigger the Amazonas Score)

Thanks for the help deciphering this mechanic kettlefish. I did not find this easy to understand because I could not see how the red boat got in front of the tile that just got laid while the other 2 players were also on the same tile.

I think the important bit is that the example starts laying a !-tile and then in part 2 it says: spater/later but shows no more tiles.

No doubt it'll be clearer once fully translated or explained in person at Essen!

My wife gave me Amazonas for Valentines Day.  We finally sat down and played it today.

Things we liked:
  • The artwork is wonderful, perhaps the best to date.
  • We like the wooden ships
  • The rules and scoring were easy
  • We liked hunting the animals rather than feeding cities

Things we didn't like:
  • There are no tiles where the tributaries end in the middle of the jungle.  I would have liked to see a JJJR tile or 2.
  • There aren't enough tiles where the rivers end in a city
  • The game tends to be top heavy.  You create this large river, but most of the tiles get played towards the top.
  • This is nitpicking, but the fruit on the rivers can be easily mistaken for animals.

Things we aren't sure about:
  • Is it possible to get a lot of points from the huts?  Our best hut scored only 14 points.
  • Is it possible to catch up to the boat with a lead?  There was a lot of rich getting richer with the boat side game.
  • Why is there fruit in the river?  Shouldn't it be fish or something?
  • Is it even possible to make it all the way down the river?

All in all we did enjoy the game.  My son preferred it to regular Carcassonne, but I mainly think that has to do with the theme and how the huts forced him to farm.    Hopefully this Around the World entry gets an expansion like some of the others.

Nice report dirk!  We had some pretty big hut farms when we played at Essen...I think Dan scored 21?

I found the fruit and animals very similar too.  Even Udo mistook one during our game at Essen!
