As some of you may already know, HiG are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and I've heard directly from HiG that they would like to create a special limited-edition version of the Carcassonne anniversary edition to commemorate this important milestone in the company’s history! What makes this even more special is that on this occasion they’ve decided to reach out to Carcassonne’s fans so that we can be involved by showing our support for some of their existing ideas (through voting), or even suggesting our own themes!
I don’t have much in the way of detail so far, but I do know that they are seeking similar input from their partners and other fan-communities, and that they are hoping to make some kind of an announcement regarding this in late March/ early April so it’s still early days but we can expect them to move quickly after this. They're being a bit secretive (as usual) and this is as much as I know for now, besides the potential themes upon which I’ve been asked to gage your opinion along with any thoughts/ suggestions you may have of course (post below)...
-
Nice!
I guess the idea will be almost a bit of a cross-over with some other games? As the themes seem to link to other HiG games (although i can't think of what Pretty in Pink links to, other than Dan himself)
I like a HiGisforthy edition, and on theme, i would suggest maybe a 'historical'-theme? Not as historic as Dinosaurs, but think France in the 1600s-1700s?
-
It would be grat a crossover with Citadels, where you could have lavish buildings in cities and fields... or even meeples in different shapes representing various characters.
Nevertheless, I would be more than happy if they had a huge Carcassonne Big Box with everything C3 and lots of gorgeous minis... >:D
-
25-figure sets for Carcassonne in all colors would be awesome too: including phantoms and 5 guard meeples of course!
-
What if they included in the Anniversary set all those long-lost mini expansions converted to C3?
-
Carcassonne Around The Galaxy - Mars Edition would be great!
You could have some official stargates to play multiverse games
@wolnic @Ker42 ;D
-
Another opton would be to release an official summer-winter expansion that allows you to combine the regular and the Winter Edition with River and all once and for all...

I'd love to see an alien planet version, just so we can coerce them to reprint carc star wars.
-
I voted Alien Planet but more in a "alien stuck on Earth during medieval times" sense, not another alien planet.
Another idea for a aesthetics-only special edition may be an edition where the field/farm part on the tiles is made of actual (fake) grass - something like light carpet
-
A big box entirely in C1 with all extensions and mini-extensions existing only in C2 or C3 converted to C1! ^-^
And a special summer/winter extension! :))
-
they would like to create a special limited-edition version of the Carcassonne anniversary edition
I don't know if you all have carefully read what Dan has written:
they want to create a special limited edition version of the Carcassonne anniversary edition.. We can contribute to the THEME of this edition.
Honestly, if it is really ONLY a special edition of the anniversary edition, even if with pink, aliens or dinosaurs, I would be REALLY disappointed!!
Do they really believe that people are interested in buying the x th version of the base game??
For me, to be interested, this would have to include a new expansion, playable with the normal base game!!
The only idea, which I can support so far, is the idea of a summer going into winter theme (=expansion)... playable with the new winter edition (also to be released in 2023)
-
It sounds like HiG needs to clarify what sort of things are too far outside the scope. When I think about a special limited edition, I think about the beautiful artwork by Graham Whieldon. I would very much love to have a physical set of that.
The previous limited edition (the medieval book) was beautifully done on the outside, but prohibitively expensive. My primary wish for whatever this 40th anniversary edition looks like is that it would be affordable. It should only be limited in the sense that there is a single print-run.
With the continued advancements in laser-cutting and engraving, I wonder what the cost would be for a wooden-tile edition of Carcassonne. The tiles would not need to be much thicker than they are currently, and I think with the right box design it could be made smaller than the standard box to help economize shipping costs.

I didn’t see the poll on Tapatalk. Having reviewed the suggested themes, I’m not excited about any of them. We’ve already had train and prehistoric spin-offs, and the other two don’t make sense to me.
If I had to come up with a theme for embellishing the existing C3 artwork, I would suggest a literary/folk/fairy tale direction. My knowledge of medieval literature is limited to English tales of King Arthur and Robin Hood, but there are many European folk and fairy tales which I think would be familiar to most people.

A set that includes mythical beasts from European folk-law from countries that publish Carcassonne would be cool. Famous legends like Beowulf, or even the Sasquatch.

I actually am.

French castles and monasteries! :)

I would like an edition with hundreds of tiles. Each tile with at least one official clarification written on it.
-
French castles and monasteries! :)
Yes, this too please! Or castles of Europe... pull in all the countries where we've seen fan made castles or monastaries expansions as official releases.
-
…We’ve already had train and prehistoric spin-offs…
Train?
Edit: ok, Gold rush
-
I would like an edition with hundreds of tiles.
I would go the other way: Carc für 3, a 40-tile (start tile plus 13 turns per player) travel-tile-size game in a miniature travel bag with scoreboard. Regular road tile count is reduced to make room for three Inns, two Fliers, two Hills, two Ferries. Pennants in cities are replaced by a special but subtle “40” banner that scores like trade goods. Players each get 1 bridge and 6 regular meeples (5 in play plus one to score).
Alternatively, release base game and all expansions in travel-tile size. Maybe as a “little big box”?

Is it Christmas? Ok my list, in order:
- winter/summer expansion
- base game with wooden tiles
- a solution for a good storage of all expansions

I use a tackle box(multiple) that fits everything really well with all the tiles I have. Something official would be cooler though

I think a Southern France expansion with 6 Monasteries, 6 Cathedrals, and 6 Castles depicting places in old Languedoc would be amazing.

I couldn't agree more!
the game is still supposed to take place in and around Carcassonne!

Alas, I'm afraid that train left the station the moment they added modern circuses to the map. I mean, I too would like the game to maintain its original "medieval france" canonicity and keep all the weird but interesting scenarios as spin offs but the genuineness was lost forever the very moment they added a ringmaster in a top hat performing a number with a domesticated seal. Since the expansion next to that was, again, something not linked to the original theme, I'm afraid they are not interested anymore to keep the in-game place & time consistent.
start tile plus 13 turns per player [...] two Hills
Two hills would require two other tiles to be placed underneath them so it wouldn't be 13 turns per player anymore ;) :D
-
the genuineness was lost forever the very moment they added a ringmaster in a top hat…
I don’t think there have been active volcanos in Languedoc for quite a while, either…

Good Catch! 3 Hills! And a 4th set of meeples, too! >:D

Nice, where Great Wall allows to join Western Culture (Regular Carcassonee) and Eastern Culture (中国的卡尔卡松 +- Chinese Carcassonne)

Absolute truth, but that's easily solvable by considering the narrative world of Carcassonne being set in a Fantasy Medieval France.
That covers all the basic locations and buildings and elements, and also would include volcanos and flying dragons, mages, witches, bridges that require a vertical walk to get on the top of them, phantoms, ghosts... but not modern circuses >:D
Q. If it's France, why are there german cathedrals and belgian monasteries around?
A. Fine, it's a Fantasy Medieval Europe setting!
Q. If it's Europe, why are there Japanese buildings around?
A. I... I don't know OK?!?! :))

Chinese Carcassonne with the Great Wall
There was a thread on CarcF about 5 years ago when someone had some ideas about creating a Chinese-based version of Carcassonne, as that could provide a very large target market! The details are not in the WikiCarpedia Fan Expansion Selector/Finder yet, but I have them for a future update. The subject title was "The Great Wall of China" or "Chinesische Mauer", and the proposal by dertoedlichepass. I've categorised it as a "Musing", because it never went beyond the ideas stage, but did touch on what could be included.

Pretty in Pink gets my vote for being easy to drop into my Mega Carcassonne bag out the gate and being my favorite color. However if Dinosaurs or Trains work to integrate Gold Rush or Hunters and Gatherers into normal Carcassonne I'd love a set to help use some additional carcassonne tilesets in the base game!
Aliens would be sick if the roads look the same and there's compatible grass: go crazy with the rest of it and it'd look like an alien invasion which could be neat.
Guess my vote is for whatever would be best for mashing stuff together: I'd rather it not be completely standalone, and it'd be a great fun anniversary bonus if, say When Dinosaurs Roamed included some maybe optional expansion tiles to help integrate some of Hunters and Gatherers since it's in print :pink-meeple:
-
ok, after a long discussion with my husband we decided to vote for railroads. In our opinion this suits Carcassonne best.
Apart from that, I still believe that a summer going into winter theme will be the best alternative ;D

Maybe some famine edition?
-
I actually could imagine a Carcassonne in present time
A couple building tweaks, some cars / tractors, bakery shop, restaurants.
more like actual jubilaum but with modern features

And mobile phone antennas instead of cloisters :yellow-meeple:

That pink image, which Asmodee and HiG (and CarcC) have been sharing on social media, looks to me like the spot UV pattern from the 20th anniversary edition. We know from HiG that this 40th anniversary edition is going to be somewhat based on the 20th anniversary edition, but different enough to be its own thing. I think the pink colour of the image has to do with the spot UV process, rather than giving away any sort of clue about the 40th anniversary edition. It is a red herring.

Isn’t it the Magenta colour plate for a box that will hold a set of Carcassonne Collectable Cards?
The box will hold 52 cards in designs and layouts taken from the base game. Each player will be dealt a hand of 7 cards and, in turn, take the top card from a stack of the remaining cards, discarding one from their hand.
Players must create complete features before laying them down in front of them. These will be scored as normal at the end of the game. Players may have several separate, distinct, sets in front of them, or may combine them to create a larger block. When the first player has placed all their cards, the round is over. Players score for completed features, but lose points for each card left in their hand.
Monasteries will be complete when they have four adjacent (touching) cards.
Alternatively, the same basic mechanism is followed, but a central landscape is created and points scored according to the features completed when the card sets are added.
Additional sets of four cards will become available in foil packs, containing several cards from the base game, plus 1 or 2 other, collectable, cards that bring additional features into the game - inns on roads, trade tokens in cities, new card layouts, etc.

What a nice date to release something like that... :yellow-meeple:

Haven't read the rules yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if that would be part of it.

I'm pretty sure it came out already... On April 1st!

Hi, matteo.kindt and welcome to the forum! It's funny you mentioned this today. I too was interested in this special edition so ended up making my own. https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6338.msg91275#msg91275
I just finished printing and gave it the first playtest last night. It was a lot of fun (even though I lost), and I thought it looked great on the table. I took pictures, but the lighting didn't do it justice. If you or anyone else are interested in this I can add it to the downloads. Cheers!
-

Oh I thought the joke was only for the pink edition but they were still actually making a special edition.
So does that mean I am wrong and the joke is for the whole thing? In other words, is there not actually coming out a special 40th anniversary edition?
-

Correct. The joke is the whole thing. It was referred to in the message from HiG on 01/04 that there had been a vote, which Pretty in Pink had won. The intention was that the joke would seem more realistic if there had actually been a vote, which is what this was. Pretty in Pink was never going to actually win it, but the results were hidden until mid-day on 01/04 so it was still vaguely plausible.
Sorry for any confusion. It was a bit involved.
EDIT: probably worth pointing out that the Pretty in Pink version did actually capture the imaginations of a few people who liked it enough that they were prepared to fan-make it!

My daughters have played regular Carcassonne; in fact they give me a pretty good run for my money...when I can get them off their electronic devices. ;)
Hoping this version with their favorite colors will make them want to play more.
