Title: I Love the Landscape!
Post by: kothmann on March 01, 2023, 06:33:50 PM
Inspired by the I Love the Postman (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1205) thread, I thought it would be fun to start a thread for posting end-of-game photo(s).  Add whatever details you want, or just the photo(s).  No game is too big or too small--all Carcassonne Landscapes are beautiful!  Also feel free to add photos of the players if you have them--all Carcassonne players are beautiful, too!

I'll start with tonight's game against my daughter using my
Updated Double-Sided Tiles (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6021.msg90749#msg90749).  Here is the landscape just before and after final scoring.  She (Gray) won over me (Yellow): 199-172.

@Challa007, love both of the C1 custom tile landscapes!  Expansion 11 looks crazy.

@wolnic, Beautiful generalization of circular river town (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=5613)!

Thanks for the merit.   :)

Here's a small landscape from a recent 37-tile game using travel-sized tiles and 5 meeples per team.  Parents (Red) versus kids (Blue), alternating turns with no intra-team communication allowed.  Parents got lucky draws to complete the 12-point city on the right and kids failed to get any FFxx tile to join the farmer at the top into the huge field, until the turn after I placed the savage blocking RRFF tile.  We won by only a couple points!

Todays game:
C1 base game with River, Abbot, Phantom, Large Meeple, Wandering Preachers (by @Snearone  with rules by @kothmann ), The Big Highwayman (and the Reward)

This was the first time we played Wandering Preachers and I really liked the rules where the preachers grant points as long as they are not completely surrounded.... Thank you Snearone and Kothmann for the fun!!!

Nice!

Looks like a savage battle for the big field on the left!  Did Green steal at the last minute?  Was it enough to win?

Interesting tile mix!  Do you add bonus points for the wheel tiles?

Thanks for sharing!

:pink-meeple: won the game by 27 points,  :green-meeple: started the battle with the large meeple on the field but  :pink-meeple: could egalize, so no advantage from the field for the parties...  :D

Interesting tile mix!  Do you add bonus points for the wheel tiles?

no, these are just the base game tiles of BB5, we ignore the wheel/sheep/vineyard tiles ...  ;)

I meant to ask if pink stole at the last minute.  ::)
But I thought the leftmost pink meeple was Large.  But even if it had been, green still wins the game!

yes, the leftmost pink meeple is the large meeple.
On that field, both green and pink have 1 normal and 1 large meeple each, so equal score
All other farmers are alone on their field.

Or do you see that differently? Did we oversee something here ? ?

We also played ..... with the 3D starter... :D

- it’s fun  ;D
- the 3D start feels different because the game only develops in one direction
- our house rules: the table edge does not finish features but the city of Carcassonne does (like maps)
- on the top of the 3D inlay all marks have to be respected for tile placement (I learned from @Meepledrone that this is madatory anyway  ;) )

This was also our first game with chrono meeples (by @stepukiss ) and the tactician (by Gwommy, digged up recently by @kothmann )
we really liked them, both might become a regular component of our games  :D

PS: in our game, the tactician can be used multiple times; we call the chrono meeple "the jumper"  ;D

My wife and I played a 31-tile (15 turns each), 5-meeple game in Charlottesville, Virginia, on the day our son graduated from college!  :blue-meeple: :orange-meeple:

Blue got all 3 cloisters in the game, one of which extended the farm to the cities at the bottom of the landscape.  Blue also glommed on to Red’s 5-point road at the top.  The largest city was also shared.  Final score Blue 57, Red 48.

It pays to keep a small travel-size-tile Carc game in your pocket wherever you go!  >:D

i would almost forget, but a few days ago, @unclewill , @MMike and myself played a nice game, with a nice landscape at the end:

We used several expansion, with interesting combinations. We wanted to use the Plague tiles, but the rules don't really combine nicely with other expansions, so we decided it was more a nuclear plague, rather than the normal plague that spreads through the rats. When placing a plague tile, all meeple on the connected features would be removed, as well as any farmers on the 8 surrounding tiles. This proved to be deciding at several points in the game, and MMike was the last one to be able to use one and gain control over a large field

The largest field is very big indeed!  Did that win the game?

I’m curious whether you think playing with City Gates tends to create big fields?  Maybe I’m just accustomed to games with GQ and especially T&B, which tend to prevent the mega-field.

It is indeed a metal tile from Brazil  :) this is a bronze version of the tile, which was given at prize (for 3rd place) at local tournaments.
We used it as our starting tile (I just happened to draw another starting tile as the first tile, so of course placed it next to it)

The largest field is very big indeed!  Did that win the game?

It solidified the win, but I seem to recall MMike was already nicely in the lead before the field was scored

It was the first time I played with the City Gates, and I like them! I think they help with creating big fields, also as they add a lot of possible tile configurations, which opens up the way for more complex cities to be completed and fields to be worth more

Also, you can barely spot them, but we also played with @Snearone 's New King's Orders! I love this expansion, as a sort of Secret Mission during the game. I did very well with them at the early game, building up a significant lead of about 30 points, only to stall midway through the game and coming in 3rd at the end due to the good farming of MMike and UncleWill

I'm not sure about it. Usually it is very useful to block large fields due to configurations where cities are ending on tile corners. But some tiles can helps farmers. That's true.

I have been playing with The Ciy Gates for the last few months and didn't have that impression in any of our games... I will keep an eye to see any hints of it...

In our case, we played also with the City of Carcassone tableaux as the starting tile(s) and we got a huge field caused by a monastery-with-road tile ending a road coming out of Carcassonne at the very beginning of the game. The field around the monastery connected 2/3 of the fields surrounding Carcassonne. The field war was on of course from this point on (tile #3 of the game)... >:D

Interesting assortment of tiles, Kothmann!  Did you use your tower and wind rose variants too?  I'm a big fan of Cosmic Orienteers.  Haven't tried Hatteras Captains yet though...

We played a game today using the large coaster tiles found here: https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4065.0 along with large phantoms and mini meeples (given for filling a hole without an abbey).  It was a great game, despite playing on an uneven picnic table and the wind almost blowing away the tiles and moving the meeples!

Hi, I'm new here, but just wanted to share a version of one of the combinations I made of the base game of Carcassonne + the 'base' river and the river from expansion 6 + Hunters and Gatherers (new version). It wasn't a game, but I just wanted to create a nice landscape with both versions. I started with some tiles of the Carcassonne rivers and from there on drew from both games at random. The only rule I applied for myself was not to put the tiles in such a way that I knew there would be no possible tile to fill up a gap (e.g. there are no tiles in either game that have both forests and cities/roads). Once finished, I admit I made some changes to try and make it a nice rectangle with minimum empty spaces. So I ended up with just one empty space in one of the corners.

Enjoy!

Thanks! Uhm, perhaps a silly question, but what are these merits and how do they work?

I doubt it would work as a competitive game, but maybe as a cooperative game?
No, I think as a competitive game it would be way too easy to block projects from being finished. But as a cooperative game? That's an interesting idea. Not quite sure how that would work, since I've only ever played a cooperative game (not Carcassonne) once. Hmm.

I suppose the goal could be to use all the tiles without creating gaps (where the result may or may not be a rectangle but with a limit to how big the playing field is to prevent a large row of single tiles). With perhaps deducted points for gaps (defining gaps as open spaces with four - or maybe three - sides closed)?
It would require a bit of knowledge of what kind of tiles (don't) exist in the game - at least from one person if you're allowed to confer... Not sure if that would make it interesting enough to play.  :-\
I might just try that out a few times by myself to see what kind of results you'd get.

Maybe if there's a 'range ranking' it would keep it interesting to keep trying, even as a solo game. E.g.:
0-2 deducted points - Brilliant, you're a professional landscape artist!
3-6 deducted points - Experienced apprentice, keep learning, you'll get there.
7-10 deducted points - Novel apprentice, keep watching the professional and get some more experience.
Something like that (just a quick example).

No clue if that would be something anyone would be interested in though.  :yellow-meeple:

Welcome to the site, SailingMeeple. Not a silly question, at all!

Merits are used if you would like to give someone a bit of special thanks for a helpful answer, intriguing idea, new expansion, or something like that. Everyone has their own basis for awarding them.

You'll see a "Give Merit" link/button under the name in the left hand of a post, clicking on it adds 1 to their merit total. It's just for fun, as I'm unaware of any benefits, but perhaps gives an indication of people who have been around for a while and doing all sorts of "positive" things on the site.

Oh, interesting! Thanks. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this topic. I'll go and start a new thread tomorrow (because I won't have much time today). Although I do have a question: shouldn't it go in the "Variant Workshop" instead of the "Expansion Workshop" since it would basically be a different way of playing with the tiles that are already there? (And +1 merit for all your help and suggestions so far as well!)

Another non-game-version which I did in the weekend. I've done the combination of Carcassonne and Hunters & Gatherers a few times, but today the scary part of my brain went: why don't you combine all the variants of Carcassonne you have? I told that part of my brain that that wasn't going to work, because they have such different colours and you know, H&G doesn't have cities or roads, Safari doesn't have cities or rivers, and... and...  ???
I'm blaming the fact that I was ill and may have been running a temperature when this idea was conceived, but since I wasn't exactly up to much else, I figured, why not?

So here's the result. I guess in Carcassonne-world there's a higher up mountain plateau where it's too cold for the snow to melt, then it drops down to a nice temperature where people take off their winter coats and defrost for a bit before they wander off into the desert. If they're smart, they stick to the river areas where at least there is shade and water, even if they still have to fight for their survival with all those sabre-toothed tigers running around...

So, there you have it: a combination of the Carcassonne, the Winter Edition, Safari, and Hunters & Gatherers.

P.S. It was only when I was putting it all away that I discovered I'd missed a tile from the Winter Edition!  :o :(

I was sorting through my double-sided tiles to get a box ready for family games during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.  I removed an eclectic mix of about 50 tiles, which my wife and I then used for quick game at the pub between drinks and food.  I managed to sneak into her large farm and grab a win.   >:D  Mostly I was just happy that the double-sided game seems to work even if you don't curate the tile mix carefully.  Cheers!

Put together a nice mix of 96 double-sided tiles and did a little play-test for fit on my 11x11 mat.  I actually like the tendency to avoid unfinished cities with a somewhat tight fitting mat.  Final landscape looked nice, too!

If you look closely, you can see little flower icons on some of the tiles.  I decided to hand draw these flowers on one side of each tile, so you can play a single-sided game (flower side down!) if you want.  This is necessary for playing with inexperienced players, who are already overwhelmed with tile-placement.  Now this one set can be used for any group I'm likely to be with over the holiday!

Ooh, I like it. Smart to include a symbol to indicate which side is supposed to face downwards in case you're only allowing a double-sided tile to be played on one side. And for variety, you could always decide to have the flower-side up instead of down. Did you randomly choose which side you'd add a little flower or did you try and make some kind of distribution of different features?

May I ask why the meeples are numbered? And what kind of material are you using for your mat? I kind of like the idea of limiting the playing space.

(Sorry, many questions. ;D)

Thanks! Loving the spreadsheet.

Meeples are numbered so we can play our Spies & Assassins variant:

Ah, thanks! Will have to dive into that a bit more when I'm not on a time limit. It looks interesting.

I made the mat using inexpensive tyvek sheets and sharpies.  See here:

Oh, nice. Never heard of tyvek. I was thinking it looked a little like pattern paper but I figured it couldn't be that as it would probably tear too easily.  :)

No apologies!  The whole reason I post is in the hope that someone will enjoy a shared experience!  Have fun!
Thanks! Definitely having fun, even if it's just knowing there are other people enjoying Carcassonne so much.  :yellow-meeple:

Beautiful!  Thanks for sharing.

Interesting how the forest seems to cause a somewhat fractured landscape

Beautiful!  Love the large wooden table, too.  I was searching for farmers in the foreground before I noticed the barns.  Nice.

Thanks so much for sharing!

... I was searching for farmers in the foreground before I noticed the barns.  Nice.
Usually, I s*ck at playing farms: Placing my farmer = no more cities finished.
This time, I managed to wriggle my barn (black) into my daughter's farm (blue)  >:D

Your daughter seems to have good farmer skills—her 2 fields at the right have 7 cities?!

Did the dragon wipe out a farmer in the field where the dragon stands now?  That looks like a lot of unclaimed farm points!

Thanks again for sharing a pretty epic landscape.

Hi @Linkarssonne (Linksux) - what paper did you use to get this finish on your WD and WD Forest tiles?  Regards, Wayne

PS: thanks @kothmann for picking up my extended (mis-)use of the quote feature ;-)

Be careful with quotes @wayneunit !  There are some grumpy moderators  (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6370.msg91709#msg91709) on this forum. >:(

But
don’t take it too seriously (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=6378.0).   ;)

Hello,

Thoses are printed tiles, directly on blank tiles

At a board game meetup last night, we played with the 20th Anniversary set they had at the cafe.  To keep the game shorter, we omitted the river and the 15 arrow expansion tiles.  We included my Guesthouses (https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/116044/variant-8-guesthouses-an-inns-surrogate) expansion as a surrogate for I&C.  And we omitted the Abbots because I don't like them.   >:D

The one new player picked up the game quickly and we offered occasional tips in key situations.  Two pivotal moments: After a nasty FRFR placement by Red, Green got locked into an incomplete city (lower left) when the last CFRR tile was played; later, Green was blocked out of the massive 28-point city when Yellow got a lucky draw of the CCFF-S tile (top center).  Red won despite having only one farmer!  Here is the landscape just before final scoring:

As always, the game was fun and exciting.  And I still think a 72-tile game is the right duration, especially for new players.

On a personal note, I was definitely reminded of how much I prefer the simplicity and elegance of the C1 art.  But the game really is just great with any art!   :D
