7 Wonders
« Reply #15 on: November 16, 2015, 07:53:08 AM »
OK, but cards and resources was what I meant when I compared the two to begin with. Like I said, I haven't played 7 Wonders and I've only played Catan twice, but I don't love the cards/resources aspect of Catan, so that makes me a bit hesitant about 7 Wonders even if the games are otherwise different. Anyway, hopefully I'll have a chance to try it out one day and then decide for myself.

What I was trying to say was that if you are asked to describe how to play Carcassonne briefly, your answer could be: "You lay tiles to build a medieval landscape, claiming features and scoring points along the way. Most points wins."

I love the intuitiveness and simplicity of that (and of course how much strategical depth there is within that simplicity), and I hope there are other games that also have this intuitiveness and simplicity.

Managed to play our first game of 7 Wonders this evening.

We both really enjoyed it.  We used the Free City as the third player and didn't find it annoying (accept in the 1st age when I forgot it wasn't my go and played a card for it by accident).  Game was over pretty quickly.  You only pick 6 cards a round.

Here'se the picture on my overcrowded Desk:

And we used an android app to keep track of the score:

Yes, I lost again :(

Did you use the irrigation or chocolate module? :)

In fact we did - but I forgot to include the basic Cacao module, so we had none of the basic cacao resouces to build anything that needed chocolate :(

Science/ technology always confuses me so I rarely go for it, even though it also seems quite over-powered. You get 7 points for each set of 3 different symbols, but don't you also get points for the number of each different symbol squared or something? So two full sets of each symbol is worth 14 (2 x 7) for the sets + 2 squared = 4 for each type = 12 more? When you include the wild cards, additional symbols through building your wonders and special abilities through Leaders, I get utterly confuzzled trying to work out how many points any particular configuration is worth, or even which of the potential configurations I could go for is worth most! Still, I lost a game last week to someone who got 42 points from Science/ Technology alone so it's certainly worth knowing!

Yeah they seem tobscore a lot of ppints if you can stop other people hate drafting thwm away from you. So it's pretty dangerous to go all in unless you're playing with weak players.

The app we used aded them up for us depending on what types we had so that was nice!

The 7 Wonders Companion app on iOS devices is pretty nice, although a little clunky and it hasn't been updated for Babel (grrr...).

Honestly, I always take the Science path if I can, although generally my opponent(s) know the game at least well enough to not let me get them all. In 7 Wonders Duel, Science can win the game for a player so I actively use them for building Wonders or just getting cash, assuming there's nothing else to grab.

I really prefer the way science works in 7W:D. Getting a pair of symbols for a progress token can be a nice little bonus (depending on what's available of course) and the scientific win seems like an appropriately difficult and preventable win condition. :)

When pushing science, I rather try to collect as much from one branch, then complete sets of all 3. With 3 cards, you get 9 points, and it should be the goal to get at least 4. But I would most time only go for science, if I have some advantage at hand, like a fitting leader (which is best to be "build" as late, as possible, to not give a hint in advance, where you are going) or Babylon as the wonder board. It is rather an easy strategy to block, but with a granted wild card, 16 points out of 4 cards or sometimes even 25 points out of 5 cards are not that uncommon.

Nice flow chart from BGG:

I need a few more games under my belt for 7W before I can compare to Duel. But so far I've only come close to a science win once (i was 1 coin sort) and only because Law was available as a progress token and had the wonder that drew discarded cards.  Subsequently I lost the game due to lack of Civil points.  Most games we've played now have resulted in a Military Victory and usually being forced into drawing a 3x as a hidden card.

Played my first 2 7Wonders games last night with two friends. I find it a really lovely game! Won once, lost once. Second game I was all over the place with no gameplan. Lost significantly!

First game I won with a combination of blue cards, red cards and guild. My friend who won the second game managed to win with red cards, his wonder and blue cards.

Science is overpowered if you can get them all but because it's pretty OP, everybody notices directly when someone attempts to play only the science cards.
