Top 10 Games - Poll #6
« on: May 19, 2017, 01:46:06 PM »
If you've been following Carcassonne Central lately, you'll know I've been collecting nominations for the Carcassonne Fan's top 10 games (which are not Carcassonne).  Who better than to ask than you, members of the largest Carcassonne Community!

Nominations are now closed, with a whopping ~166 gaming franchises chosen by you all.  But that does leave us with a difficult question....Which are the top 10 games!

To be clear, I'm not going to attempt to rank all the games, just find those top 10 games we all enjoy.

I'll cut to the chase:  I've grouped the games up randomly into batches of ~20 games.  Every voter has 3 votes they may cast against any games.

You have 7 days to vote, voting will close and The top 2-3 games will be moved into the next knock-out round.  The other games, will be left forgotten.  Hopefully this will help us determine which games are our most favourite.

Here is today's poll - which will close on the 26th May.

Don't vote hastily though, now is the time to persuade others to cast their votes wisely and back your game!

Wow another 3 of my nominations in this thread:

First up is Gipf - the amazing abstract strategy game, I played with Dan at Essen

Kingdom Builder gets my vote over Dominion, as it's slightly more accessible.

Baseball highlights 2045 gets my last vote - I did a review recently

Although I'm familiar with most of these games and played many of them, I went for Dominion and Rummikub.

Dominion is quite popular at my local board game club and I like the game even if I don't win all the time. The combo build near the end of the game can sometimes be quite intense! :)

Rummikub is a game so dear to my heart. A family tradition when we visit my Aunt and family in Belgium, or when they visit us here in Sweden. Our copy of this game owned for over 2 decades now.
PS: This game is fully played with 2 decks of standard cards with 2 jokers. Holding 15 cards in hand can be messy, but works if on the road.
World record holder for a single game of Carcassonne using 10 007 tiles!

I really need to try Russian Railroads.  We have had it for a few weeks, but haven't sat down with it yet.

I voted for Mysterium and Zooloretto.

Of all the boardgames we own, I must say Jamaica is the absolute worst.

Another nice list!

Have to put my nomination for Grand Austria Hotel at the top of this list. It's one of the few games that I have upgraded my original rating to a perfect 10. This is a solid mid-weight Euro and would be a next-step game. You can check out my review here, if your not already familiar with it. http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3025.0

Dixit would be my next vote. This is perfectly suited as an easy entry into the hobby gaming world. My gamers-game rating for this is a 8/10 but I would push it to a 9 or a 10 as an introductory game. There are load of Card expansions which keeps the game fresh.

Finally for this list, Kingdom Builder. This is another excellent introductory game that I think would be even better than Catan as an introductory game. It has less interaction than Catan which I might argue is a better way to introduce Euros to a new audience.

Edited for poor Grammar   :o

Wanna play Carc? Can we add just one more expansion?

I went with Dominion, Zooloretto, and Dixit. I believe all three were Game of the Years (or at least nominated as such) and those awards were well-deserved.

Dominion is an excellent introductory card-drafting game with near infinite combinations when the expansions are included. The game is still heavily supported by the designer and it can be a blast to play. And best of all, even when there is a bad game, it rarely takes longer than an hour to play and then a better random combination of cards can come out. Some people say that Kingdom Builder is a non-drafting variant of this game, but I don't see it. I like KB, but it just does not stand up to Dominion and my partner despises it for some inexplicable reason.

Zooloretto is one of my personal favourites, especially when played with its large expansions XXL, Exotic, and Boss (with Familiarisation Area). The game is a risk-taking game with some work placement issues, space management, and building mechanics, all in the guise of a cute zoo. It is fairly easy to learn (even with the expansions) and it is quite fun. It's sibling, Aquaretto, which has been out of print for years now, is almost as fun as the full Zooloretto game (and can be played with it), but the original game with expansions is by far my fave.

Lastly, Dixit was a surprise hit for me since I generally avoid party games, but the mechanics and creativity required to play Dixit is just too great to pass up. I own the first four expansions and would own the rest if I had a job and money (the future beckons). While it does not really play with 2-players like the other games can, it still has a lot going for it, plus the beautiful often absurdist artwork is to die for. Vive le Dixit!

You can always play GIPF online : http://boardspace.net/english/about_gipf.html

I found this picture from my Essen Report:

Some of these others can be played online too, and there is an average app for Baseball Highlights; I don't think it's a very good introduction.

I voted for Avalon, Dixit and....Rummikub:

- Dixit: just bought the Odyssey version...for me, Dixit is the perfect mix of a easy-to-explain party game and yet a real brain breaking element.  The beautiful graphics of the cards makes it complete.  If I had only 1 vote in Poll 6, this would be it.
- Rummikub: aaaah....flashback too my youth...and still played and appreciated now and then
- Avalon: a nice filler party game with lots of intrigues.

Russian Railroads is on yucata.de. I like the game, but prefer it on the table. You'd better have quite a large computer monitor, if you want to play the online implementation conveniently.

Seems we have a lot of Spiel des Jahres winners this poll:

Kingdom Builder 2012
Zooloretto 2007
Dominion 2009
Rummikub 1980
Dixit 2010

and one 'Kennerspiel des Jahres' too:
Village 2012

This one, for me, is the most difficult by far. So many good games on this list! Struggling to just pick 3.

It's a close run group this time.  Voting ends on the 26th.

But I've opened the next Poll to run concurrently:
