Architekton - Carcassonne lookalike
« on: April 30, 2015, 03:33:18 PM »
As I was hunting and gathering, I found this interesting game:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16499/architekton

Haven't looked into it much but it does mention it's a similar Carcassonne tile laying game.

And the biggest question I think many of you will ask, as I already asked myself: Will these tiles match Carcassonne's.  :)

I doubt it, these days even Carcassonne tiles don't match Carcassonne tiles.

Actually I used to own this game. I was traveling somewhere in Germany (Frankfurt I think) and entered a Galeria Kaufhof which is a big shopping mall you can usually find in every german city, and saw this game had a big discount on it (at least 50%). So I decided to give it a try... however, when I opened the box I was really dissapointed by the quality of the components and I remember I was really unimpressed by the rules. Then the box sat on a shelf accumulating dust for about two years and I finally got rid of it in a Christmas gift exchange (one of those gift exchanges where you are not allowed to spend more than 5 euros per gift)  ;D

An inside man.  8) Do you remember if these do match Carcassonne tiles regarding tilesize and grass?

As pointed out by someone else, the colouring does not need to match nor the light/darkness of texture.  :meeple:

From what I could remember they were definitely smaller... then I started to look online to confirm and I found this:

https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/147084/list-square-tile-placement-games-and-size-tiles

According to this list, Carcassonne tiles have measurements of 1.77 decimal inches but Architekton is not listed there... HOWEVER there is a game called Aqua Romana from the same designer (Martin Schlegel) released the same year (2005) by the same publisher (Queen Games) with more or less the same theme (Antiquity). Aqua Romana tiles measure 1.50 decimal inches so it appears logic that Architekton would have the same tile size but I can't be 100% sure.

Sorry about the imperial measurements: an american guy created the list and I was too lazy to convert.  8)  I hope this helps.

0.27 inches = 6.86mm difference in tile size.

So, quite a big difference in size. Certainly very noticeable.
