Whilst I played chess and various card games (black jack, pontoon, rummy, etc) when I was young, the first board game I remember with affection was Totopoly, mainly because of the fact that you got to bet and race the horses at the end. One of the best horses was Dark Warrior, but unfortunately one of his legs fell off and, although my mum replaced it with a broken matchstick, he always leaned alarmingly after that 
. It's easy to pick up but has lots of variety and depth, even in the base game. As Decar says, playdominion.com gives you the chance to have a go for free and has a tutorial mode, so is well worth a look - it can be interesting to see some of the different tactics adopted by the bots depending on the combination of cards being used.
