Hi Derek,

yes this will be exactly the Windrose from the Carcassonne-on-Tour. Concerning the watermarks I have to check it. I'm not in office today and can let you know earliest tomorrow evening. But I assume it will be absoluty exactly the windroses like before from the Tour.

Best regards
Barbara
Looks like I won't be needing this item. Without the Spielbox pentagon icons, there's really no point for me.

So now there are two things left to confirm: (1) Are the tiles the same tiles as the currently-available Windrose expansion? and (2) Are there any watermarks on the tiles? Either of these will probably warrant me getting this expansion still...because I am crazy.

Edit: I've just received the email too and have asked Barbara at Spielbox directly. I'll post the answer when I receive it.

News and Events / Re: Carcassonne Suedsee - the new stand-alone-game 2013

So it looks like "trade routes" are going to replace roads. I wouldn't be surprised to see the ability to claim the individual routes. However, I also notice little arrows on the routes, suggesting directions of trade, perhaps?

Not only is the artwork different from Siege, but most of the tile configurations too. I only see one that is the same configuration (CCRR).

Different configurations + tin box = me interested, but if I'm doing this I want to pay via Paypal. Kettlefish makes me pay via wire transfer which cost me an extra $10 in transaction fees.

I agree. I'd like a copy of the set, especially if it has a tin. But I'm against high additional charges, especially transaction fees. Shipping is high enough.

Nice discovery with the tiles being different. I was going to check that but didn't find the time.

The box is made with sheet metall or tin can.

That explains the rounded corners of the box. I'd guess it's a tin.

News and Events / Re: Z-Man Games Release Schedule
« on: September 04, 2013, 07:24:54 PM »
I doubt it's never getting reprinted by Z-Man, I just suspect it is at the bottom of their list. The fact that they are referring to the expansions by number is also welcoming since RGG dropped that beginning with #6 (which they didn't print standalone). No word on Wheel of Fortune yet, either.

That really is a bummer for you guys overseas. But maybe we Germans can arrange something for you (as long as you'd want to pay 24.99 Euro plus postage and packing)? I already got a request from someone to get him "Die Belagerer" and hope to hunt down another copy for him.

Hi Hylian, if I sent you a PM with my address could you maybe send me a copy too? Thanks for offering!

I'll second that!

Has anyone ever asked Reiner Knizia what the rules, new components, etc, were for the planned expansion? Last I heard it was completed and just never released. Perhaps he'd be willing to leak the rules without the art, and we could create the tiles or components from there.

This autumn we will have in the CundCo Shop (Moritz Brunnhofer told me this two weeks ago by call):
- the Wind Roses
- the Festival

Ooh, maybe the Cundco version of The Festival will have expansion watermarks and be printed on better quality tiles. Then I can return my ten tiles to my sister who won it at my wedding two years ago.

Yup, I'm starting to agree with Tobias. I actually liked that they packaged "Count, King & Cult" together as a package deal but only because they also made "The Cult" available in two other formats (Speilbox and "Cult, Siege & Creativity"). I was decidedly unhappy about having to purchase the 10th Anniversary Box for "The Celebration" but I was fortunate in needing a door prize for our wedding that year, so we let it slide and simply informed the victors that it "may be missing ten tiles *wink*wink*". "Wheel of Fortune" was less of a burden, while I received "The River" in my original Big Box back in 2007 so that was never an issue.

Regarding "Die Belagerer", I really would like a copy of it even though I own both "Siege" and "Die Katharer". I have no real desire to pay ~$33.00 plus shipping to get a copy of that box, though. I already have "Count, King & Cult" as well as the base game, and I've inundated copies of the game on all my friends over the past five years, so giving yet another copy away is just not really an option anymore. Tobias may be beating a dead fish, but he decidedly has a point that every time Carcassonne does this (or any of its distributors), it sours our opinion of the game and its marketing practices. We aren't directly insulting the game, but more the marketing decisions behind it.

Hmm. Perhaps the new Spielbox expansion is these six tiles? Or perhaps the Cundco offer will be for these six tiles rather than the old tiles or the whole box. I've already got all these expansions, too, so would rather not buy the box set. However, I'm a completist so I'll need the new tiles, especially since there are six of them.

I'm excited. Spielbox expansions are always interesting. They seem to create strange, yet appropriate ideas.

I've played it once and, honestly, wasn't super impressed. That being said, the Kingdom Builder Big Box that is coming out this fall is on my must buy list and it really is the only major purchased planned for me before Black Friday.

General / Re: Bests Spin-Off Games
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:13:12 AM »
Since I've played and own most of them, I guess I'll chime in:
  • Hunters and Gatherers - Best spin-off with the best mechanics. A lot of the good things in Carcassonne are kept, but things like Farmer scoring are replaced with more intuitive concepts. River network idea is also a lot of fun. The Scout expansion doesn't add a lot, but it does give this a tad bit more variety in a game that already has quite a bit of variety.
  • Ark of the Covenant - Also a fun spin-off with a nice Biblical theme that doesn't seem out of place or preachy. The different rules for Temples versus Cloisters is a bit jarring at first, but makes the game feel just different enough to set it apart. The Ark is also a fun little mechanic, albeit one that was later adopted in Carcassonne expansions to a degree.
  • The City - Honestly, my least favorite of the bunch. The wall is rather annoying in its ability to crunch down the size of the city, while the internal mechanics and the visual graphics are just kind of dull. We rarely play this spin-off.
  • The Castle - Also a bit of a hit and miss spin-off. It has a nice two-player feel which is not bad, but the fiddlyness of the frame and the rather poor look of the tiles degrades this game to the realm of shelf squatter. We only really play this when we're in a Carcassonne mood, are sick of the base game, and there are only two of us. Plus, I am still waiting for somebody to release The Falcon expansion, which was announced in the Stone Age and is still buried in rock.
  • New World/Mayflower - An awful theme (especially the Europe version, which is ahistorical) for a great concept. In fact, I adapted this game to Carcassonne in my "Reconquest of Gaul" expansion available here. I love the mechanics of units forcing the board to move ever westward, yet the graphics are a bit too real-life and the icons too difficult to discern. I really wish this had been created as an expansion rather than as a spin-off.
  • Wheel of Fortune - A terrible name for an abstract spin-off that is really just an expansion to the base game. If you want more meeples, tiles, and a new mechanic for Carcassonne, look no farther than this game. If you live in Europe and want to read the Carcassonne-themed book, buy the combo set. If you don't yet own the base game, buy this instead. It gets you all the same stuff with a free expansion included. (Okay, the base game comes with the River, but this free expansion is bigger and includes a pig meeple!)
  • Winter Edition - I don't actually own this one yet, but it is basically a spin-off of the base game. Get it if you like winter-themed games. The forthcoming Z-Man edition does include the Gingerbread Man expansion as well, which is an entirely new mechanic unique to this game, so it isn't entirely a repeat of the base game, but it's pretty darn close. Expansions like the Phantom and the Messages would work just as well here as with the main game, which isn't a bad thing if you enjoy those expansions. Winter Edition is also the most likely to receive more expansions in the future due to its recency and the fact that an expansion was released simultaneously with it.
  • The Discover - I haven't played this one, but I've generally heard good things about it. It apparently has some features that are generally taboo in Carcassonne, that drive up the speed and stress of the game
  • The Dice Game - Also haven't played this, and generally not heard good things about it. Carcassonne is random enough already. Try using dice to create simple features to earn points. Short, easy, and simple, but not overwhelmingly exciting. Stick to the cardboard unless you love dice.
  • Cardcassonne - This is not Carcassonne at all. Rather it is a card game that uses Carcassonne's art. While the game is apparently not that bad, don't buy it thinking you are getting a game with similar mechanics as the others.

I think that's it. Good luck in your quest!

Not the German blog, no. I'm a member at Dominion Strategy, though, which Donald X. directly worked with in developing the later expansions.
